This test should be called the “15 minute charging challenge“ you drive it to low SoC, charge 15 minutes and repeat like on a road trip. This 10% name is just confusing and not intuitive, otherwise you wouldn‘t have to explain it that lenghty. Doing it from 10% to 10% for consistency is fine.

Click the view button on the steering wheel for the charging details. My Q8 received 41Kw off the new SK Signet EA Chargers. Noticed when the charger showed the requested charge rate from the car that the charger was delivering generally 10 kW less. The 170 kW rate is in the middle of the charge session which is good if arriving at the station with a little extra juice in the battery. I have seen a calculated 250 miles of range at speeds between 75-80 mph which is plenty for almost any trip, since charging stations are generally less than 70 miles apart.
@realev21
@realev21 9 ай бұрын
The new Signet chargers which show the requested speed are engaging in a bit of an information operation and are not showing you the car's requested speed, but the car's adjusted requested speed based on the maximum amperage of the charger available at that time. In other words, if the charger has been derated, and the amperage to be delivered has been lowered, the car's requested amperage will be lower. So if a 350kW charger can only give an e-tron 60kW because it has been derated, the charger will say that the e-tron is requesting 60kW.

I like this kind of tests though the e-tron did actually much better than the comments in the video imply. Looking at the overall results table and considering that the e-tron ran on 21“ wheels and that it was not the more efficient Sportback variant, the tested e-tron did actually quite good. It got more range than the Model Y which is somewhat comparable in SUV like dimensions and also got more than the not counted MB EQE 500. Also, though not as good as the Taycan for obvious reasons it’s on second place when looking at the kw/h intake after 15mins. All in all I think much better than commented.

I have owned BMWs and Merceds and they do not compare to an Audi driving xperience. Yes, Audi is overpriced, which is why I buy pre-owned and avoid the depreciation hit. This car would do even better if you plugged in at 30 or 35%. I know for the sake of the challenge they all start at 10% but the Q8 etron's best charging speeds are later in the pack as you discovered when unplugging. Instead of 10-46% you might be able to do like 35-75% or more in the same 15 minutes which could be an extra 10 miles or so of range.
@iMaxPatten
@iMaxPatten 9 ай бұрын
I believe it considering it took a while to get peak speeds! The voltage ramp up on this pack is gradual. We test all cars the same way for this challenge but that might be the best strategy for roadtrips. Around 65% it does start to slow down, and by 85% it is tapering much more aggressively than old e-tron.

@@wizkashifa you also have to keep in mind what chargers are available. You would need something capable of providing the 390 amps required for the peak speeds which would likely be a 350kW charger. Most 150s top out at 350 amps.

It seems like almost all of the cars effectively come down to "charge for 15 minutes for every hour of driving". That's incredibly terrible, I thought they would be WAY better than this. Pretty much only the Porche is even close to a resonable charge speed and even that is just acceptable.
@abraxastulammo9940
@abraxastulammo9940 9 ай бұрын
This holds true if your consumption is 1/4 of your charge speed. BUT you always have the initial full charge range if you start the trip (from your wallbox) and the 15 min charge might get you to your destination or you can make a 30 min break to order food and then go for 2(+) hours.

@@abraxastulammo9940 Yes, from spring to fall I generally travel where I'm driving 3-4 hours, do 4 hours of work and drive 3-4 hours home. I wouldn't have access to charging on location usually. This is why my requirements to go all on on a full EV is 3 hours of highway driving in 15 minutes of charging. Currently I drive a PHEV and if I fill up the night before I don't even have to stop in either direction because it's rated to get 1000km on a tank of gas but 900 is more realistic in real world driving.

Different people will have different definitions of "acceptable" charging speed. I road trip infrequently, usually with my family, and we stop often in any case. To me that's a big part of a road trip. If I just had to get from point A to B as fast as possible, I would fly. So I'm less concerned with charging speed, and more concerned with having plentiful and reliable chargers in places where we actually want to stop. If you do a lot of bat-out-of-hell road trips and need to cover ground in the minimum time possible, then an EV isn't for you with current technology.
