The guys take the Audi S5 for a drive in the snow in this third and final part of our Sports Coupes comparison. And in the final discussion, how well will the upstart Cadillac CTS fair against this Audi and the BMW 335is?

I noticed the 335i tested was a manual, but the S5 was automatic. Although the balance of the cars is a factor, I suspect the automatic transmission is largely responsible for the lack of feel reported in the review. I'm considering an S5 and if I take the plunge, it will certainly be a manual for that reason.

The RS5 is a fun car, but if we brought it to this comparison we'd have to also bring the M3 and the CTS-V... at that point all the cars are even more expensive. It would be a fun fight, though! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I love my 2010 S5 6MT. My only questions for the "drivers" in the comment section bashing the S5 for feeling "numb" and "un-involving"... Have you driven one with the upgraded rear differential and Drive Select? It becomes 2 different cars. "Comfort" feels nice and easy. "Dynamic" transforms it into a beast. It's incredible. 99% of my driving is on everyday commutes on public roads. For this purpose, there are few cars on the road better. Luxury and power in exceptional form. If your JOB is to race on the track, this is not the suit you wear to your office. This is the suit that destroys 90% of the competition it faces every day, but doesn't have to scuff its cufflinks demolishing the douche in the R/T next to you. It's Duane "The Rock" Johnson in a well tailored suit.

Just to give credit where credit is due, Walter DeSilva, ex-FIAT and Alfa Romeo Designer, and then, Head of Design at AUDI Brand from 2002 - 2007 designed this beautiful coupe. He has been quoted that this was ( A5 ) his favorite design during this era of AUDI. You didn't think a German guy designed something this beautiful, did you?? lol Che Bella Automobili !! ;)

@cuts2thebone - Excellent question. The concept of this review was spurred by the 335is - the hottest 3 Series you can buy that Isn't the M3. So we gathered the models just beneath the M3, RS5, & CTS-V. The result was these 3 cars, which vary wildly in standard features and value for money.

The Audi just needs simple software tunning. You can reprogram its AWD system for more oversteer(It comes with very conservative and safe settings out of a factory, even in dynamic mode) and the V6 version can be chiptuned to 400+ HP, then it'll be the best, but you may lose warranty.

I've always had my eye on the 335 and the S5. I only buy used vehicles, so have been waiting for prices to come down. I also research the crap out of cars before I buy them and am a bit obsessive. Winner for me is the S5 for styling, interior fit and finish, and reliability. From everything I have read on forums, BMW's turbo on the 335 is absolute crap with wastegate issues and problems with the high-pressure fuel pump. Replacing the turbo is $7k. Google search "335 turbo issues" and you'll see search result after search result for problems, class-action lawsuits, etc.. Also, resell value for the 335 is much lower than the S5. You can buy a 2009 335i under $20k off a dealer lot. S5's are about $30k.

Allen Walker I'm in the same boat Allen. All ways wanted a 335ix. After hours of research, and a few long test drives. I'm going to buy a 2012 Audi S5. The BMW is a great car, and a hell of a lot of fun to drive but overall there really isn't a doubt on the choice. S5.
@williamharrington6952

Allen Walker the turbos are not the issue with those cars...its the high pressure fuel pump that is the problem. they are cheap to replace and are covered under warranty for like 120k miles

Get the N55 single turbo and all those problems are gone. Its really a fantastic car, almost no turbo lag. The car looks great and it handles like a dream. The only downside its the Audi had better interior. But i like the basic interior of BMWs, its all preference there
@allenwalker4816
@allenwalker4816 9 жыл бұрын
William Harrington Eh, the Internets seems to think there is a problem with the turbos. Also, when I was looking around for used 335's, "Rebuilt Turbo" was common in ads. I neither have access to all the raw data, nor am I trained actuary. It was just something I saw on the boards, in ads and other online sources. Same thing with the fuel pump. Don't know how hard it is to replace in a 335. I upgraded my fuel pump in my 4runner to push more gas to my supercharger and it wasn't that big a deal, even though the fuel pump wasn't exactly a $50 part. Labor wasn't too bad. Just a six pack of beer.

@viclam Ken Okuyama is an example of a Japanese designer who worked for GM, Porsche & Pininfarina. He designed or supervised projects including the Porsche 996, Boxster, Ferrari Enzo and Ferrari 599. It doesn’t matter who designed the car - hallmarks of good designers include the ability to sustain the ‘flavor’ of a particular marque. Great designers do not design for themselves or for their national heritage. Hope you have time to check out our 2010 FAQ, and thanks for watching!

@therealmichaelw - For Everyday Driver we've set a price cap of around $50,000. Thus, everything we drive needs to be something which can be bought new for around $50k or below. So, it's not that we can't get an M3 or CTS-V (We have driven them, btw) but they are above the price-range. Now... you could get them used... ;-) Meanwhile, we are going to start doing some more expensive cars under an "Exotic Driver" brand. We hope everyone will enjoy those as well.

He just doesn't know what he's talking about. Also ... With a simple Stage 2 or 3 S5 would whoop everybody's ass including a lot of supercars'. Audis are very tuneable and trouble free. Especially 2.0 V4 and 3.0 V6. You can tune a B8 or a B8,5 A5 to 600-700 HP very easily for not a lot of money. And it would whoop exotics 👍 B8 and B8,5 Audi A5/S5/RS5s are definitely future classics.
@EverydayDriver
@EverydayDriver 13 жыл бұрын
@broncovinnie - Point taken, but we think it depends on perspective here. Our approach was to gather the three highest models just under the fire-breathing M3, CTS-V, and RS5 - and that means these three cars. The A5 would have been underpowered in this company and wouldn't have been the best Audi offers underneath the RS5. And while the S5 we drove was far more money than the CTS, it is possible to get them cheaper and close to the 335is and the CTS in price.

@wilstave If you're referring to the 5th gear 335i vs S5, the BMW won by 6 hundredths of a second, not a "blows this out of the water" performance. But let put things into prospective, if you load up a 335i with X drive, nav and upgraded sound system you're at $59k vs $62k for the S5. If you load up the 335is the price is the same as the S5 but without all wheel drive. The Audi has a more refined interior & exterior and has more power but needs better steering feel. The 335 needs updating.

@EverydayDriver
@EverydayDriver 13 жыл бұрын
@jconte29 - Industry wide, car journalists generally regard Audi for their interior quality - so we are not alone. That doesn't mean Audi's interiors are fault-less. Yes, Merc does some nice interior work, but they also have their share of mis-steps. Also note the fact that when Ford & Dodge decided to finally improve their interiors they publicly set Audi (not Merc) as their target.

It's ok as I said, but if you're a tall driver, forget about the person behind you unless they are very short. It's not as bad as the 911 the seats are actually useful just wouldn't imagine having to drive that everyday with more than 2 people, like every other coupe it's a compromise of look before practicality.

@jrgold027 - It would definitely depend upon the seating position of the person driving. Both Paul and Todd are 6'3" and when they were driving the seat behind them had no legroom left. Someone shorter would change the situation. The seats themselves are good, but the leg room is the real question.

I'm the owner of an Audi A4, and it is a quattro model. I've had a theory though because my other cars feel faster than it, but only because they are front-wheel or rear wheel drive, and you either feel as if you're being PUSHED or PULLED, but because the Audi is quattro you're in the center, and don't feel too much pull which is what is happening in this video! It doesn't feel as fast because the force on your body is less, but they really do make fast cars! Just my theory though!

@NoGoodJim The M5 will beat the S5 in every performance category and it's also $10k to $12k more money. The S5 is not a pure sports car, it's a GT. I've got one and it's a WONDERFUL highway car. I've had 3 BMWs and I really like this one best. I do wish that it had the same feel at the steering wheel as my older 3 series cars but the power and all wheel drive definitely make up for the deficiency. Also the S5's wheel feels better at higher speeds, but it's not as good as the BMW's wheel.

I believe the comment about "the power never gets to a point that wows me" would never have been said if you had tried the 6 speed manual. The drive would have been different and quite frankly more fun. Also the S5 has been clocked at between 4.7 and 4.9 in the 0-60. Audi says 4.9, either R&T or C&D says 4.7. Thanks!

Capt Mifune I agree to a degree. You need to get the sport/m-sport models with adaptive suspension to get the performance you would expect from BMW. Electric steering has naturally taken away some feedback as well. I drove a 228i M-Sport last week without adaptive suspension and can honestly say it could have been stiffer. Steering was fairly numb. Overall BMW still owns the performance meat of luxury vehicles, besides Porsche of course.

The styling is waaaaay too conservative for me... give me something that says "HEY, I'm an Audi & I cost $60,000!" I am in no way, shape or form a Honda fan but I think the 2016 Honda Accord Sport coupe looks the part of what this Audi should turn its direction towards without over-doing it. The Audi has that 'cookie-cutter' styling the whole VAG has and needs to have its own identity! Just sayin...

The new one has The V6T because of fuel consumption (still the same BHP). The old one had the V8. This is a test of the old one.

I'm in the uk and in winter, your BM won't be driving anywhere in the snow, my '06 325i M sport would not drive in the slightest of snow, it hasn't even settled and you could see the road through the snow, but nope, bmw not going anywhere, turned traction control off and that helped but in the end i had to abandon it, it slid into the camber of the road to the gutter and couldn't get out. next i bought an '06, 2.7 tdi Quattro S line. snow? what snow! fantastic, Audi forever now

I'm not sure, but isn't the S5 the equal of BMW's M3?

it completely depends on the model and color. in my opinion some look better than all bmw and audi models. Audi and beamers generally come off as more impersonal to me and slightly less masculine while caddies are striking in character and less plain. Too each his own.

Although I really admire the CTS and was extremely impressed by the styling when I saw a CTS coupe at an auto show, I have to say I'm disappointed by seeing it in-motion in this series. I think the styling of the CTS has to be admired up-close, so you can see the great tail-lights and fully appreciate the details. But at more realistic distances, how you see it on the road, it has dimensions that make it look more the size of an M1 tank than an M3 coupe. For that reason, I'd have the BMW.

i bought an S5 because of the exact opposite reason. the 335i looks exactly the same inside and out as a 320i, I actually like the drive of the 335i better, but i just didn't want to pay 130k for a car that looks the same as a 60k car. The S5 at least looks different to an A5. I think the best car to get is M3, which would be my dream car but is way out of my price range, i.e. 200k plus.

I really enjoyed all 3 videos and I have owned a few of the cars in your review. Out of these three I would go with the Audi S5. I always found the 335i to be more fun to drive but the sound of the S5, and the interior win the day. At the limit the Audi will shut you down and the BMW will reward you all the way up to the limit of the car. For any of you who have owned these 2 cars you know exactly what I mean. The Caddie brand does not speak to me?

its crazy that the main point of contention for why the Audi didn't win was the price, but in a few months I'm buying one for 15k

You would expect car reviewers and enthusiasts to choose the 335is, seeing as it is the most involving... You would expect people who don't know cars and what a piece of art to choose the S5 And the people who cannot afford a German to choose the Cadi

@therealmichaelw I'm sure they could get the cars. Though with the TT RS coming to the US I wonder what the guys would think of that? Since the S5 is basically a coupe, would the TT RS be the better buy with the Turbo I5.

Well that 3 series is being replaced by the new one so no point in going to buy that one new. Normally I would say BMW because they are more driver oriented, but because of such long and snowy Chicago winters, I'd take the S5. Plus its got V8 power.
