Hi, thanks for the review, it helped me clear some questions I had about the sono, but I have one more question that I cant find the answer. Can you use the Reamp out while you record a clean DI sound with the sono? Something like, guitar --> Sono Guitar Input (record this to daw) --> Reamp Out --> Guitar Amp /cab/Mic --> Sono Input 2 (record this to daw too). So you can record a real guitar amp sound and a clean DI sound at the same time without needing extra DIs.

Very useful to have the SM7b test. Presumably there's some stock mic pre-amps for vocals and DSP like compression, EQ and reverb that can be added vocals. My main use would be to replace my Line 6 UX2 for guitar and vocal live streaming so I was wondering if this is able to DSP vocals as well so I can send that to the stream.

Best video on this product I have seen. Got mine last week and still playing with it - I was hoping you could change the power amp tube type on the remote but I cant see how to, only in WoS plugin. The other question I had was you used a DI box to send the clean change to the DAW but I thought there was a dry signal path through the USB on a different channel - or am i missing something - not tried it myself though but I see a NO CAB output from Sono on the mixer software.
@adamsteelproducer

Yeah I used a DI box to get a super-clean non-valve version of the tone, the No Cab version is still affected by the valve but not the Two Notes part. If there is another way to get the DI on channel 1 without the valve, I’m not sure I found it
@1980djanderson

@@adamsteelproducer ah, thats a very good point sorry - you are correct the guitar input would be running through the Sono Valve so the clean no cab channel would still not technically be full dry signal. What would you say is the difference between two notes' implementation in the Sono vs. the cab m+ (other than the absence of a preamp model)? I understand that the Sono is far less tweakable on device relative to the cab m, but if using the software remote, what are the key differences? Do they sound different, use different IRs, limitations to IR length, anything else?

I have the audient sono and have been using it for about 1 year. I was thinking of buying an external DI box instead of using the built in DI input as I noticed it's sometimes quite noisy. Having not owned a high quality DI box before (I have a cheap behringer which I have tried), how good is the audient sono input in comparison to say a Radial or Countryman? Great review, I just got mine a couple of days ago and coincide in most of the things you say here. However, there are things that could be looked into with more detail, for example, the use of pedals in front of the sono. From my brief experience, it's not like running a tube amp, it's not great to use with a compression pedal and even worse a high gain distortion or a mid boosty kind of distortion, if you do use such distortions you've got to find the right mic and cab combinations that will allow you to hear the guitar and the pedal without all of the high fizz (If you use the studio room and get the mic farther out, you may cut some of this out). Compression pedals are not necessary, in my opinion, because feels like sono is already compressing your signal. Would also be interesting to run an amp in a box kind of pedal with valves into sono, also, it'd be interesting to try and reamp into an AB box to run a wet-dry rig. Cheers!

I'm finding it a bit noisy (high static) with single coil pickups, when you let it ring out/sustained chords, more so than my tube amp.
@adamsteelproducer
@adamsteelproducer 5 жыл бұрын
Could that be because you’re driving the input harder than you would with your tube amp? You naturally don’t push amps very hard because of the sheer volume that comes out, because it’s usually less so with interfaces people subconsciously put more input gain in
@jacksonpodxtshredder
@jacksonpodxtshredder 5 жыл бұрын
@@adamsteelproducer Do you mean driving like increasing having the input level high? or the gain on the pedals? or the inherent gain on the console? Everyone I've seen and myself, we just ramp up the input to max and somewhat manage volume with the output knob. I don't know the answer but will continue tweaking
@adamsteelproducer
@adamsteelproducer 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s a bad way of working, with the input all the way up, it’s like a Fender clean channel with the gain high- it just adds noise more than distortion. And the “drive” control is power amp saturation in the Two Notes section. You’re better off having these two quite low for high-gain tones and adding the gain from pedals
@1980djanderson

@@paulallen6849 i found exactly the same thing - I wasnt even driving the power amp and input below 12 o'clock, even with the Boss NS-2, I spoke to Audient and they told be the following "The first thing I would recommend to try about the noise you are getting with Sono is grounding the unit. This is done by connecting the grounding point located underneath the USB-C connector to any ground point you have around you, such as the chaise of a desktop computer, a radiator, any other grounded device. You can use an M3 screw to attach a wire to the grounding point of the Sono. You wouldn't normally need to do this in order to get a clear signal, but some setups will have more noise than others, which is why we included this grounding point on the Sono." Iv not tried it myself just yet but maybe give this a go

Hi Alex. On its own it certainly isn’t a high gain thing, but think of it like a clean pedal platform type amp- you could put a very heavy pedal in front like a Friedman BE or a Revv G3/G4, then it would be brutal indeed. And if you’re just looking for an interface, I’d recommend something like the Audient iD22 for yourself

From my brief experience, you won't get a good modern metal sound out of this. I think we have similar needs so I can tell you that i used a high gain drive into it, lowered the drive from the sono as well as the output volume, used a 4x12 cab with a mic I liked and then positioned the mic in a sweet spot enough to cut out the fizz, not get much reverb and still have clarity on my guitar sound. I'm planning on getting an amp in a pedal box like revival drive or the victory sheriff. Hope this helps!
@1980djanderson
@1980djanderson 5 жыл бұрын
I also how been on the hunt for a similar set up - I was hoping my Sono would get me what i was searching for (hair metal 80s type tone) but like others have said its not a high gain unit on its own - I put pedals in front but personally i was getting so much noise (even with the Boss NS-2) it was almost unusable - there is a M3 (or M4) ground point under the USB connection though for extra grounding that iv not used but Audient tell me it should help. Anyway what i have done is brought an amp head with the Two notes captor and i plan to run the XLR DI out without CAB sim from the Captor into Sono (mic 1 without running through the valve) and use the torpedo remote (not tried this but hopefully it will get me where i wanna be) - total silent playback and record but with tube amp sound. Of course i dont need Sono for this but I actually like the clean tones you get through Sono for other tones so its a great all rounder and worth the money.
@jacksonpodxtshredder

@@1980djanderson I'm curious to see how a preamp pedal would shape the sound. Maybe a Victory Sheriff or an Origin drive could make the sono sound like an 80's EVH. For now I did run my distortion in front of sono, low gain like at 10 (clockwise), with both input and output at around 10-11. To take out some of the fizz I used the modern setting and withdrew the mic until I found the sweet spot. Maybe it can work for you

@@jacksonpodxtshredder I was thinking of the LeCrunch or Lelead running into Sono but settled on a DSL40HR (sheriff a little out of my league) with Two notes captor. Going to play around with it to see how i go - Personally I have tried Boss SD-1, DS-1, Dawner Redbox with Celestion IRs and Two notes cabs (mainly 4x12 and 2x12) with different settings on Sono and the pedals and im just not getting there, but i am getting lots of noise even when on the JB humbucker pick-up. When i turn down the input to reduce it i get further away from where im trying to go. I do think some of this is me though and not the fault of Audient/Two notes, I just have not had the time to really get into it - was kind of hoping i could get a greast tone straight out of the box. (BTW around 10 is where i found the input works great and output i dial back abit more to around 8-9ish and power amp drive at 12o'clock) - listening to @hoppolestudios videos the LeLead sounds great in the mix (to my ears)

I don’t know if you already bought the sono or Id44 but I thought I’d give my 2 cents. I too own a kemper and was looking at the sono but found it’s features to be unnecessary because reamping with the kemper does not require a reamp output since the return input in reamp mode will reduce the line signal to a instrument level. In order to get a 1. Processed signal, 2. Dry DI signal, and 3. A reamp signal back to the kemper, all you need is to 1. run a cable from main outs to a channel (preferably without a Di), 2. Run the direct out (set to git analog) to a DI input channel (you could also use git studio straight into preamp, but I like the audient DI better), 3. Run a output (3 or 4) from the audient to the return input of the kemper. I somewhat have this setup with my id14 but the extra outputs of the id44 will make the process of reamping much smoother. For that reason I’d choose the id44 over the sono UNLESS I choose to use an actual tune amp or amps. Then the sono makes more sense if you don’t have a reamp box already. I’m planning to get the id44 because of its extra inputs and extra headphone out as well as it’s extra controls with the function buttons and the ability to add inserts to the first two channels

I bought this audio card 4-5 months ago. I am extremely disappointed from the unit and audient support. I bought this audio card in order to replace my Scarlett 2i2 1rst gen. After I bought it I re-recorded all the rhythmic guitars for 6 metal songs. After that I was trying to figure out the tone of the guitars using vst plugins. I struggled a lot because I noticed that the signal was getting dirty easily with crackles etc. I did an experiment to see if the valve preamp is noisy and the problem comes from there. Well, increasing the gain of the signal at parts where I was recording but I was not playing the guitar I expected to hear noise floor but I found sth else. Just by recording from the valve circuit and even having the output volume of the unit at 0db, I found out that in the track there was recorded whatever was playing in the background e.g. the metronome. I did the same experiment with a backing track. E.g. I have the rhythmic guitars playing and I play the solo and recording in in another track. A part of the rhythmic guitars was recorded in the solo track. It doesn’t matter if I had the volume of the backing track at 0db. This means that all my new recorded rhythmic guitars have had extra noise from the recorded metronome. Loading vst overdrives, distortion and digital amps the noise was exaggerated and I got more noise. I did the same experiment with the Line in inputs and there was not the same problem. This means that recording from the Valve input, which is why I bought the audio card, is not an option for those who want an as silent as possible DI signal. From the audient support through the email they told me that the unit must be defective and that I had to send it to my seller. My seller told me that the unit was ok and refused to do the above experiment even after I asked audient support to tell him about my problem. Audient support told the seller that everything is ok and that probably I am the one who doesn’t know how to optimize my DAW. After that I found the audient community on facebook I made a video of the experiment and asked a question there. Daniel Mills (technical support manager of Audient) answered this: “A very small amount of cross talk is expected in the valve gain due to the gain staging that is used and the fact it is an unbalanced circuit, however, this will typically be buried well in the noise floor of the input and practically inaudible under normal usage. However, if you are normalising this signal so the loudest peak is a 0dBFS then you will of cause hear this alongside the massively amplified noise floor because of the normalision.” What I did in the video was that: I recorded from the valve input to one track with the guitar plugged in but its volume at 0, while having another track and the metronome playing at the backround. I recorded silence. Then I normalized the signal and apart from noise floor you could hear the metronome and the backing track playing. This is for audient normal. But for me and my needs isn’t. This just makes my DI dirtier when I use different vst amps and overdrives. Another problem unrelated to the previous one is that when I plug an instrument to Line In 2 the leveling meters of the audio unit doesn’t respond. To this question Daniel Mills didn’t even bother to respond. Overall this audio unit sucks big time. I have the chance I would replace it with something else. Don’t buy this unit if you really need clean silent DI tracks.
