If not talking about the software aspect, rather than buying 2 small CAB M to get the stereo, don't you think it is better to get that SONO and plug the stereo effects right in the two mic/line on the rear panel?

you have the monitor mix control at halfway which means you're hearing both direct and daw return signals at the same time? you expected that to sound good? unless you turned off the input monitor in your DAW you are doing it wrong.

As always Henning, thanks for the effor you put in, but so far pretty much every demo of thins thing that I've heard (with possible exception of Pete Thorn) has sounded fizzy and brittle, almost as though it was missing a cab impulse, even when there is supposedly already a cab impulse being used. It's not blowing my skirt up.....

Hello, I thought that as an guitar somewhat beginner I can use this interface to play rocksmith with amping. Had the Motu M2 before that only had clean sound obviously. However with the Sono I get no input signal on my pc.... so I wouldnt be able to record or in my case rocksmith has gets no input when i play Any Idea why?

I don’t think it’s meant to do this, but it probably has something to do with your routing

This seems overcomplicated for what it does. If I want an ok sound to record with so that I can reamp later...I just use a di box to split the signal between a Yamaha thr10 mic'd or something and the other goes in direct.

Seems most logical use for a home guy is to route his fxloop (or line-out) of an amp, use it as a poweramp+cab ir+post eq tool. Audient also marketed this by using pedals only and to me it was a huge marketing failure (in every video sounded like ass). They shouldn't have let it be perceived as a guitar preamp...

The concept is interesting, only the sound is inferior, usability and options are shockingly minimal. If you really want to market this to guitar players, throw in a bunch of micing otions, IRs and sims for Gawd's sake. Otherwise it is just an average interface with a more or less useless gimmick. Good video btw... :)

Great video as always Man! I do want provoke you... linking this video to the TWO (Note) CAB M stereo (your 5/5 video)... where the Audient Sono popped-up and you highlighted some kind of "overlapping" between the two products. Well... the Sono is a audio interface and the CAB M is not! The Sono has a re-amp out... has a valve (tube)... ok... but in the software emulation side well... are clearly overlapped... and even the software editor is the same Tow Note Remote. Both are superb "pedals platforms"... both can operate "stand alone" on a pedalboard... both are perfect "guitar preamp platforms". So what?... well... i ended buying a CAB M+... AND... an Audient SONO! So now the provocation for you (you are a bit responsable for the condition of my poor credit card!... so be kind now Man! XD ): i hope in a video from you where you set a STEREO rig (for daw recording) using: - a CAB M ... AND an Audient SONO - a real guitar pre-amp (i want to put in my new/old ADA MP-1) - some pedals in front (comp, wha, drive) - some stereo effects (chorus, phasers, flangers, delays, reverbs) C'mon Man... do it!!!

I own and very much like an Audient ASP800. Good preamps and ADC! When this Sono was announced I thought it looked like a great alternative to the Apollo Twin or Antelope Zendesk, geared more for home recording guitarist, but honestly it's a swing an a miss. The Two Notes implementation is so minimal, they should have left it off because most people buying this kind of product aren't going to want to invest in that tech further without the features seen on actual Torpedo products. The preamps are all the same on Audient products, so that's good, but the rest of the features, especially the converters are really not that well designed and yes they work, but for this investment you could spend a lot less and get the same ultimate digital recording quality. The whole thing with the onboard tube not matching with the "drive" control in the software UI is just confusing and a shame. I hope people don't buy this because it only encourages Audient to aim low when they are capable of great useful products.

I bought this audio card 4-5 months ago. I am extremely disappointed from the unit and audient support. I bought this audio card in order to replace my Scarlett 2i2 1rst gen. After I bought it I re-recorded all the rhythmic guitars for 6 metal songs. After that I was trying to figure out the tone of the guitars using vst plugins. I struggled a lot because I noticed that the signal was getting dirty easily with crackles etc. I did an experiment to see if the valve preamp is noisy and the problem comes from there. Well, increasing the gain of the signal at parts where I was recording but I was not playing the guitar I expected to hear noise floor but I found sth else. Just by recording from the valve circuit and even having the output volume of the unit at 0db, I found out that in the track there was recorded whatever was playing in the background e.g. the metronome. I did the same experiment with a backing track. E.g. I have the rhythmic guitars playing and I play the solo and recording in in another track. A part of the rhythmic guitars was recorded in the solo track. It doesn’t matter if I had the volume of the backing track at 0db. This means that all my new recorded rhythmic guitars have had extra noise from the recorded metronome. Loading vst overdrives, distortion and digital amps the noise was exaggerated and I got more noise. I did the same experiment with the Line in inputs and there was not the same problem. This means that recording from the Valve input, which is why I bought the audio card, is not an option for those who want an as silent as possible DI signal. From the audient support through the email they told me that the unit must be defective and that I had to send it to my seller. My seller told me that the unit was ok and refused to do the above experiment even after I asked audient support to tell him about my problem. Audient support told the seller that everything is ok and that probably I am the one who doesn’t know how to optimize my DAW. After that I found the audient community on facebook I made a video of the experiment and asked a question there. Daniel Mills (technical support manager of Audient) answered this: “A very small amount of cross talk is expected in the valve gain due to the gain staging that is used and the fact it is an unbalanced circuit, however, this will typically be buried well in the noise floor of the input and practically inaudible under normal usage. However, if you are normalising this signal so the loudest peak is a 0dBFS then you will of cause hear this alongside the massively amplified noise floor because of the normalision.” What I did in the video was that: I recorded from the valve input to one track with the guitar plugged in but its volume at 0, while having another track and the metronome playing at the backround. I recorded silence. Then I normalized the signal and apart from noise floor you could hear the metronome and the backing track playing. This is for audient normal. But for me and my needs isn’t. This just makes my DI dirtier when I use different vst amps and overdrives. Another problem unrelated to the previous one is that when I plug an instrument to Line In 2 the leveling meters of the audio unit doesn’t respond. To this question Daniel Mills didn’t even bother to respond. Overall this audio unit sucks big time. I have the chance I would replace it with something else. Don’t buy this unit if you really need clean silent DI tracks.

Man that was an horrible review! I guess the benefit of this device is if you use a amp sim and put this thing before, you maybe make your tone more tuby ...because the pre-tubes :) It would be very nice if you do this review again and use a really good amp sim like Neural DSP Archetype and compare it with the "normal" Interface to see if it makes any difference. And the Neural DSP Archetype is a tool that is definitely worth a review on its own!

I wanted to review it based on what it is supposed to do well, which is get you tones without going through a piece of software.

@@EytschPi42 Yeah I got you and its good that you doing this in that way, somehow :) But I bet there are some other benefits with this device and maybe you can make a part two and combine it with good Amp sim like the Archetype Plugin which is really amazing and a step above the usual suspects and Im pretty sure you dig that too. The most of the Sono buyers are bedroom producers which are using amp sims anyway and I guess they are hoping of a realer tube tone or feeling so a comparsion between this pre-tube interface and a regular one would be very interesting.
