Chinese copycats don't piss me off as much when they're honest and upfront about being cheap copies. As someone who works in audio, what REALLY GETS me is when reputable high quality brands that we trust suddenly turn into chinese garbage overnight. Three recent examples I can name are JBL, AKG and Ampeg. Brands with history and reputation within the audio world that suddenly got bought by someone else, moved production and started churning out noticeably worse products while still expecting you to pay high prices.

I've tracked some vocals in a rented studio recently and was very surprised to see JBL compressors in the rack. I thought they were some cheap shitty stuff because of all chinese crap that I see in the everyday life. Had no idea those units were legit good

Don't forget about Peavy. Best example that I can think of in recent years within the guitar world.
@kennethc2466
@kennethc2466 2 жыл бұрын
You mean all are American corporations that that now manufacture in China, so the monopoly FMIC didn't close their doors. American small, mid, and large business is DEAD. Only the monopolies and outsourcers remain. This will NOT change. Peavey moved to China manufacturing, yet their 6505 is the EXACT same amp as the American made one, so your "loss of quality" is quite moot. Machines only care about the country's voltage, not location. PS, if you think all Chinese made stuff is "garbage", you'll be throwing out EVERYTHING you own, including the non-Chinese products made with CHINESE components.
@JacobVBurg
@JacobVBurg 2 жыл бұрын
@@kennethc2466 Look, I don't have a horse in this race because I don't currently utilize Peavey equipment. However, there are massive numbers of old customers who are no longer happy after the company moved their operations recently. You name one specific Peavey product while ignoring everything else they make. Also, me mentioning Peavey =/= endorsing the idea that all chinese made equipment is garbage. That's a massive logical leap, but whatever. If I actually felt that way, I wouldn't have half of the shit in my studio. Calm down, it's always better to have an approachable conversation even if you're passionate about something or have a relevant fact to add. Hell, defenders are as triggered as the people complaining about "chinese garbage."

I know a guy who worked for Mackie when the Behringer controversy happened. They knew they couldn't get B. for copying the schematics because they were fairly common circuits stacked together. It was the layout over which they were suing. That's much harder to design well. B. pretty much single-handedly forced Mackie to shut down their U.S. production and move to China. The only other alternative was to close shop. On another note, B. has a terrible warranty policy; if something fails under warranty, you have to pay the return shipping and wait however many weeks/months it takes to get it back. In the meantime, you either had to buy another piece of gear or not do any business. Just about everybody else will cross-ship a replacement or at least give you a loaner for higher dollar pieces. Terrible company. It took almost a year for me to get them to relent and send me a replacement module for a defective X32, which installing myself, voided the warranty (that's against U.S. law). Did I say they're a terrible company?

That's why people get really riled up when any part of free speech is attacked. Free speech is supposed to mean free speech, but first it was tampered with by politicians saying we shouldn't/can't say certain offensive words, like racial slurs. First of all, if someone feels like blurting out racial slurs all day, who is anyone to stop them? Certainly not the law. Words cannot be governed. That's up to each individual and that's not limited to just offensive racial slurs. Curse words like "fuck", "shit", etc. are considered offensive language. Should someone be ticketed or even possibly jailed just because they drop an F-bomb? That kinda bullshit flies in Communist countries and other countries that throw free speech out the window. I'd rather take the bad with the good than have it all outlawed. Real life isn't school where the whole classroom is punished because someone did something bad. That's another thing about any government that irks my nerves. They treat citizens like bumbling, incompetent children who need guidance from some governmental deity, more or less. You know, a lot of people can't stand being controlled by religion, but they'll turn right around and worship their government. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

A GIBSON Audio Audit would be excellent. Want to talk about shady practices? Gibson practically wrote the book on them. There are so many bought-and-paid-for 'influencers' on Social Media (KZfaq especially) who are on the payroll of Gibson. I once saw a complete propaganda piece from PMT-UK on their channel FILLED with Gibson's marketing lies and half-truths. It was stunning!

@icksbocks
@icksbocks 2 жыл бұрын
In terms of the copying, I really do not see a problem. Unless the circuits are patented (which is difficult to do since they are usually not really inventions) it is perfectly legal and I think fair to reverse engineer these usually old products. And the "looks" part is not really an argument, because since it is usually mostly a functional design, you cannot claim it as intellectual property AFAIK. The other stuff mentioned in the video is pretty fucked though. I do not own any Behringer products and probably never will now.

I hate to be that guy, but the guy doing the voiceover (Omegon?) has such an awkward delivery that it somehow sounds like someone trying to put on an accent they don’t actually have, reading each clause of each sentence as a separate take and stitching it together after the fact, or a text to speech device in any event. Whichever one it is, the point is that it’s incredibly distracting, especially in such a long statement to read back. Nice idea to get someone else to play the other character in the dialogue, but in future you may want to think about giving them some more direction on delivery, or have some kind of process for finding someone who does the best job with the material. Hell, I doubt you’ll ever actually read this, but I’d even do it to save the hassle 😂

The guitar business is rife with copying even before Behringer existed. How many really original guitar designs and gain pedal circuits have been invented since 30 years ago? Hell, look at the reception the guitar community gave this certain someone some time ago threatening on video to enforce their trademark and telling people that they are fake because they play copies. The whole guitar business is based on copying, behringer is just the most blatant at it.

Personally I have no problem with Behringer "copying" products and buying up other companies, as long as the consumer is still able to tell the one from the other. Everybody does it. That's just the way our economy works and after all strong competition is always good for the consumers. I do have a problem with Behringer suing critics and people they encounter on social media though. That's just a bad move and it backfires nearly every time.

@@VodkaSelekta Ah, there is no 1/4inch jack that can't be EASILY replaced on ANY pedal. I jam with a guy that's used the same Behringer OD pedal for over a decade. Plastic and cheap as hell, yet it works. Same as the Danelectro stuff. Half the "bad inputs" I see are just dirty and corroded, especially if shipped around the world after a year in storage. Just fixed a "broken", BRAND NEW PRS for a friend, with a spray of contact cleaner and a brush. I got a Bogner pedal that came with a defective switch as well, and a brand new Marshall were the reverb didn't work. Does that mean I'll never buy from them again? Of course not. I ain't defending any corporation, just stating the facts.

Ah, Canada has laws against such defective products, ESPECIALLY imports. "Under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, a company, its directors and officers can be found liable of a criminal offence for breach of the act. Penalties include fines of up to C$5 million and imprisonment of up to two years. Certain offences under the Criminal Code may apply to corporations and their directors, officers and employees relating to the manufacture and distribution of products in Canada. These offences may include fraud and criminal negligence"

@@kennethc2466 One of the pedals I got was wired incorrectly so that when switched on the battery power went in a loop and back into the battery instead of powering the pedal. Within a couple of minutes it was so hot I thought it was going to catch fire. The other was a copy of a big muff fuzz and just produced nothing but feedback. I can replace switches on pedals, that's something simple. But this was obviously zero QC after manufacturing. Just build it and box it , no testing of units to see that they work.
