You can, dynamics could help a little bit. For example, an expander or gate can help with breaths, but lipsmacking that won’t help so much.

@@JasonYadlovski Jason: I just tried to use the dynamics (limiter) on more than one clip, and was confused on how to select which clip that I wanted to "operate" the dynamics on. On the first clip, it seemed very straight forward, but on the 2nd or 3rd clip it seemed less straight forward. It's probably something really simple, but on DV17, sometimes the control design assumes facts not in evidence, and one ends up guessing how to proceed. This is no doubt only a problem for software as capable and powerful as Blackmagic DV17. Anyway thanks for your videos. You take really complex controls and make getting results crystal clear. Your videos are always my "go to" when I want to learn something about DV17 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! regards, Dan
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan - so when you’re using the dynamics, they apply to the entire track, not a single clip. So you only have to do it once and it applies to every clip within that track. We don’t have the option to use dynamics only on a single clip unless you put that clip in a track by itself. Does that make sense?
@dannoringer
@dannoringer 2 жыл бұрын
@@JasonYadlovski Jason: OK, got it. Crystal clear as usual. DV17 dynamics apply to the entire track, not just one selected(highlighted) clip. Yes, it makes sense, and thank you for your lighting fast reply. Of course the ultimate flexibility would be if the dynamics could be set for each individual clip, but really, it's not much of an issue for me to have the Track level dynamics control. I guess if a person really needed to have a different dynamics setting for two different clips, there's nothing saying that you couldn't just open up another track, and put your "other" clip over on that track. Don't know how many audio tracks DV17 supports, but I know I personally have had 5 tracks operating on a single video before, and it showed no sign of that being the upper limit. Again, thanks Jason !! You are really THE best at DV17 tutorial videos !!!

Thanks. I'm trying to move from Premiere Pro to Resolve. I use the dynamics effect in PP, but I can apply it to the clip instead of the track. I generally edit using as few layers as I can. Is it possible to apply such adjustments to the clip, or am I just doing it wrong? I also ordered studio with the speed editor, and someday it may even ship. I use the Contour Shuttle Pro 2 currently.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 3 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! Yes, you can apply to a specific clip if you’d like. Just open your FX library, go to the audio FX, click on the one you want and drag it and drop it on top of the clip you wanna apply it to. Then you should have the effect on just that clip. That’s awesome that you got the speed editor, it looks pretty cool. The studio version is awesome since it uses a lot of GPU power versus the free version uses only CPU power. Plus you get some extra features and effects and what not. Best of luck making the transition, I’ve talked with a lot of people who have done it and it seems to work out well. Thanks for watching!

How do you RAISE the level of low-volume voices? I'm working on a panel in which some speakers are super loud and I can fix that with a compressor, but how do I raise the voices of the panelists whose microphones are very low?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Жыл бұрын
You can try the new dialogue leveler if you have Studio. If the voices are all in the same track, use the makeup slider in the dynamics panel to make the quite voices louder while using the compressor to make the loud voices quieter. If the quite voices are in their own track, use the volume slider in the inspector or the compressor/makeup in dynamics. I’f you use any effects that have gain, you can also boost the levels there.

Hello Jason. I'm really new into Davinci and your videos are helping a lot! Thank you! I'm trying to find some option or workflow to animate the adio effects. For example, I'm trying to remap the speed of the audio with keyframes to simulate how the sound gets slower as it goes away from the viewer. Hi Miguel! Doing great here, hope you are well too! Yes you can modify individual clips in the Fairlight tab, just select the clip and use the inspector to make adjustments. You can also add effects to individual clips by opening the effects library and dragging/dropping an effect onto a clip. Unfortunately you can't use the dynamics on a single clip, that has to be on a track level. Hope this helps!

Just a question, I've been told that voice should be mostly around -10dB and -20 dB. But sometimes there're peaks that go above -5dB. Should I limit them with the threshold if there are too many to solve them manually (with the inspector and softening that peak isolated)? Thanks, Jason.

What is the opposite of an expander? I tend to talk really quiet and then get really loud. So I turn on the compressor to control the loud parts, but then I have to manually increase the volume of all the parts that are too quiet. Is there something that will automatically increase the volume of anything that's below a certain dB?

Hi! Probably the best, but must time consuming thing to do is use keyframes to keyframe the quiet parts louder. Or make cuts around the quiet parts, move them to a new track and work with them there. If you don't want to do that, I'd boost the makeup, enough so that the low parts come across well, then apply the compressor and lower the threshold to compensate. Not sure it it would work, but that's where I'd start.

Hey great video, definitely the best for dynamics in Davinci. But I don't really get the difference between compression and normalization.. Thanks.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Жыл бұрын
Thanks! So normalization will essential adjust the entire clip in one shot so that the clip meets the normalization level you set. For example, if you normalize Peak volume to -9db, then the clip would auto adjust the volume so that the max/peak levels are -9db and everything else will move accordingly. Compression is a bit more dynamic on how it works. You set a threshold or level where you want it to start. For example -20db. Then you compress or reduce any signal over -20db by the ratio you select - for dialogue typically 2:1 or 2.5:1. This means for every 2.5 db of volume over the -20db threshold, the volume will only increased by 1db. So it's compression the audio above a certain level you set. Compression also allows you to make quite parts louder and louder parts a little quieter, where as normalization only sets on level and everything moves accordingly. So quite parts wills till be quiet. Hope this help a bit!

@@JasonYadlovski Yes now it's clear, thank you really much! But what if I adjust the volume of the clip in the mixer until I reach the point I want my peaks to be, instead of the normalization?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Жыл бұрын
If you adjust the peaks to where you want, your doing the same thing as peak normalization. Compression allows for more consistent audio by allowing you to boost the quite parts while limiting (compressing) the loud parts.

Does DaVinci Resolve not have a dynamic processing option? This video’s great, but I’m just looking to “process” the audio like in Adobe Audition. Raise the valleys, lower the peaks, create a more unified sound. Sort an auditory version of ‘best fit line’. That way, if I raise the volume, it doesn’t overmodulate or even worse cut off peaks.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Жыл бұрын
I’ve never used adobe audition before, but if you’re talking about something like dynamic EQ, it doesn’t have that built-in. But if you had a plug-in, you can run any audio plug-ins that you have right inside of fairlight. I’ve been using the F6 waves plug-in lately, are you talking about something similar to that?

Are you able to record 1-2 tracks of audio with very low latency with EQ and compression while monitoring the effects real-time? I'm downloading 17 now to see because I couldn't figure out how to accomplish low latency monitoring in 16. I'm not doing anything complicated. A lot of people are hollering that this is because of a lack of ASIO support. I typically use ASIO in Reaper to record music and I can record up to 30 tracks with a whole slew of VSTs running. I was hoping software as advanced as this could do somewhat close to the same without forcing me to buy a $995 audio "accelerator." I already spent $800 on an audio interface (Focusrite Clarett 8pre USB).

Could you say more about the difference between noise reduction and the expander / gate? Am I missing something or do they give equivalent effects?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski Жыл бұрын
The expander and Gate are going to reduce the level (volume) of audio below a certain DB level (threshold) that you set. It can either completely cut off the audio using the Gate, or just reduce the levels (based on your settings) using the expander. For example, the Gate and Exapander will help reduce the noise between words when speaking or if there is some sort of background noise below a certain DB level. The Noise Reduction included in Resolve works a little different and in my opinion it really isn't that good. I really don't use it because I'm not usually satisfied w/ the results, but it try to isolate dialogue/vocals and eliminate other background noise. In reality, instead of the noise reduction effect, I'd use Voice Isolation if you have the studio version or I'd use something like Waves Clarity VX. I hope this helps a bit, let m know if you have more questions!

I don’t think I set the limiter to -29, where did I say that in the video? I would have to go double check. The question is am I supposed to do EQ etc on the track selected on the timeline (which could be multiple selections throughout a multicam - Or - should EQ be done after you “open in timeline” the multicam individual clips then edit those individually? If it’s the individual clips I will tell you that it never remembers the EQ I do, when I come Back to the edit it doesn’t show up. Also it’s confusing that when you click Equalization in Fairlight, It seems to be a separate thing then clicking on the one in inspector. If I was to use just my intuition I would want to turn on the equalization in inspector if I’m doing any equalization in fairlight. I’ll try to send a short video here so you can see what I’m talking about

I understand it can be confusing. Just to clarify the difference between the EQ in the inspector and the EQ in Fairlight in the mixer - The EQ in the inspector is a more basic EQ and only applied to individual clips. The EQ in the mixer in fairlight is has more points to adjust and is applied to the entire track. For me, when I make multicam clips, I have 1 consistent audio source inside the multicam clip, so I just use the Fairlight EQ to apply EQ to the entire track in my normal timeline. In general I use the Fairlight EQ for the entire track. I'd only use the inspector EQ on a certain clip if that clip needed some additional EQ that I could not accomplish with the Fairlight EQ. In what circumstance would you use hold?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hold is used when applying dynamics. It tells Resolve how long to keep the compressor/gate/limiter active after it is no longer needed. For example if you are speaking and take a breath, with zero hold, the effect will turn off and then turn back on when you are speaking. If you had the hold set for 1/2 a second for example, the effect would stay on while you take a breath because it's holding it for a length of time you specify. Does that make sense? Hope this helps!

If you have the ratio cranked all the way up, it could be like a limiter but it’s really just reducing the peaks by whatever the ratio is set to. It’s not a hard limiter where it stops the audio at a certain threshold.

4:31 ... Respectfully, your description of the limiter in this particular panel is incorrect. Allow me to share incredibly helpful info here. The limiter in this panel is NOT a "hard" limiter, that is, it does not set a hard ceiling above which no signal can pass. This limiter is really just the compressor in drag ... with a high ratio. If you try to use this to set a hard limit, say to meet YT standards, you are going to be endlessly confused and frustrated. BUT, if you click on EFFECTS > DYNAMICS > LIMITER, there you will find a simple hard limiter. I do all of my NR, EQ, compression, etc., and then do this hard limit last (by just setting it to, say, -1db). It took me so $%&! long to figure that out ;-)
