Every day is a school day watching this channel. I just wish I had my headphones with me at this time but I can always watch it again. Thanks for creating this channel. I really think your audio course would benefit me and I’m planning on making the purchase.

Hi Brian thank you for comparing these mics! I agree with the comments saying the AT875R is well rounded while the SGH-6 sounds sharp with lacking low end. 👍

oddly I think the SGH-6 has more mid frequencies to work with without as many reflections. While the AT875R has a more pleasing unmodified sound, I think the SGH-6 might be better in highly reflective and untreated environments, but is going to need some EQ work to get it to resore some of the lows. The big question is how much would it take, and will that restore similar reflective tones to the AT875R? It would require some additional testing.

I just got a Zoom SGH-6 and I'm disappointed with the high noise floor. It's only just noticeable in your recording though I think because you have virtually no gaps where you are not speaking. The Zoom sounds relatively tinny too which does show up in your recording but your deep voice kind of mitigates it. The AT875R sounds much better to me.

Absolutely. The level of noise is just unacceptable on this mic.

Hello! the AT875R It will be compatible with the Zoom Q8n-4K I understand that the sgh6 is perfect, but it is most likely that I will place the camera behind a teleprompter at a certain distance and it is convenient for me to have the microphone closer, but I see that it must have phantom power 5 52v and I think the zoom is 48v if I remember correctly... What do you think? thanks in advance for your comment.

I guess the sound of the SGH is not untreated.. the sound coming out of this mic is really super noisy which is not clear in this video means its heavily treated to reduce the noise.
@AudioforContentCreators

It is completely raw and unprocessed. Otherwise, what would be the point of this video? You can hear how thin and noisy it is compared to the AT875R. I agree, it sounds terrible.

This was helpful. Considering the SSH-6 for more versatility. Thought I could use it for isolating my mandolin during podcasts. Also using an AKG C214 as my main vocal mic at a 3-4" range to utilize proximity w/the high pass filter. Thus the need for mixing in the mandolin with another mic, and since I already have the Zoom H5... aside from that, I was aghast seeing a drink coffee cup on top of your electrical equipment 😉

BoothJunky fan also! What is the best pick-up pattern for each task? i.e. outdoors vs indoors on a boom pole/camera? If your looking for isolation what is the strategy with each mic type? Which is best for untreated indoors (excluding dynamic mics)? Line & Gradient vs Supercardioid vs Hypercardiod 🤔

I use zoomh5 with sgh6. Run line out to studio camcorder in. Then runs to atomos recorder. I can record for hours without sound drift. My camcorder is broadcast camcorder with excellent preamp.

An awesome video as ever Brian. 😁 👍 To my ears (I'm listening to this video with in-ear headphones) the unprocessed/raw audio out of the Zoom SGH-6 sounds crisper, fuller and richer as opposed to the Audio-Technica AT875R. That's not to say that the AT875R's was bad by any means - it sounded very good don't get me wrong, however, with that being said, I did find that it sounded a bit quieter and a bit less full & rich in comparison. However, again with that being said, if one was looking for a more natural-sounding out of the box shotgun mic then the AT875R wouldn't be a bad call. By the way, if you haven't as of yet watched Podcastage's videos on microphones I definitely recommend that you check out his content. Cheers! 🍻

Love Podcastage. I use his channel as a reference when I need to check something. And yeah the AT is more natural sounding but also a bit dull. The Zoom is crispy but overly vigilant, bordering on harsh. Also has a high noise floor. Lots of self noise. Neither is exceptional, but I like the SGH6 for being a compact setup with the H5.

The Zoom was a little bit thin by comparison, the other sounded fuller but a bit boxy in the mid range. I watched this on my Samsung TV and I'm glad that I made the choice I did to get the Zoom. I am using it with an H6 and find it can be a bit heavy using it on the end of a boom stick.

@@AudioforContentCreators I haven't got either one, but looking to get one... I got the H6, so the SGH-6 would be obvious... then again it can only be used WITH the H6, so I'm still a little indecisive. Which one do you prefer?

I don't know. Someone should help me decide. The longer I listen to both of these mic in this video, I like more the Audio Technica and the SGH seems harsh and nassal the longer I listen. The Audio Technica is pleasing to ears the longer you listen to it. It's full! But when I pause the video to make coffee, when I returned to listen again, the Audio Technica seems lost its clarity and SGH is more crisp and I like it. But again the longer I listen I kinda like again the AT. So I guess if I create a video more than 10mins, I should use the AT. And when I create a video not more than 10mins, then I should use the SGH. BUT I can only afford oneeeee... LOOOOL

100% the AT875R. It's not even close. The SGH is thin, brittle, harsh, and very noisy.

@@AudioforContentCreators Yeah I think your right. I can still achieve the crispiness I want through EQ. But the noise with the SGH can also be cleaned but you'll lose some details. Thank man!

I have an opinion, but that's not what this video is for. In fact, I explicitly stated at the beginning of the video that this was a comparison for you, the listener, to decide. You'll even note the title says "comparison" and not "review." It sounds like I'm just not the right channel for you. Appreciate you stopping by, and I wish you well finding the right channel.
