Hear how the Tascam DR-70D sounds in comparison to the Zoom H4n and the Tascam DR-40. Listen to their built-in stereo mics, and hear how they handle the following popular mics used in video production: Rode NTG-3 shotgun, Rode NTG-2 shotgun, Audio-Technica 4053B hyper cardioid, and the Sennheiser G3 wireless.
I explain the settings I used on the equipment, and share my detailed thoughts on the recorders and mics in this dedicated blog post: goo.gl/4PN6Os
CHIRPING noise from the DR-40 when used with the Rode NTG-2 - I explain what I think caused this noise in my blog post - goo.gl/4PN6Os
This video was shot on a Canon 7D Mark II DSLR, and edited in Final Cut Pro X.
The music at the end was written and recorded by me, with Chris from www.ifandit.com/ on drums.

That Rode NTG3 sounds sweet. Not cheap though. This is a great mic test video even though its titled for recorders!

thank you for the great comparison! do you want know what caused the chirp sound on dr40? was it only there at high gain? I had an audio recorder that I could hear a same type chirp but some other people couldn't hear it. it was very apparent at high gain. seemed to be from the hard drive sync pattern... but I really don't know what the root cause was. thanks again for all of these videos. they help me evaluate before I buy

The ntg3 output impedance of 50 ohms vs 250 ohms for ntg2 makes a big difference the ntg3 with the dr-40 actually sounded pretty good !

That was my pick. It was interesting to me to see and hear the difference in tone of a shotgun vs a lavalier. It's a choice I may be pushed to make early next year. I do think the shotgun was positioned lower and closer to her than the previous shotgun comparison set though. It sounded fuller.

Great stuff, I have an NTG2 and I'm not sure if it sucks or not - I was thinking of getting the D70 Mk2 for the better preamps over my H4N Pro and this has helped get me closer to making that decision. Thanks!

Ok man , and what do you think now about the d70 overall quality recording?

I know the NTG-2 is not as good as the NTG-3 (which is a great mic), but it was positioned further from the subject...

+SLRist Yeah... the test isn't perfect. The intention is to provide a solid impression of each mic, and I think it does that. The NTG-2 is good, especially for the price. The NTG-3 is better, but it costs way more. Same old story... :)

hey man any advice regarding setting levels on the DR-40
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+Ariel De Leon Yes. You need to treat audio levels like you treat a manual focus lens. Here are the clearest instructions I could write on how to set audio levels - www.sam-mallery.com/2013/02/how-to-set-audio-levels/

Please help, I have NTG2 + Tascam DR 70 and inside even outside I have a big problem with noise. In KZfaq tests is everything ok, but unfortunately my sound isnt professional, honestly is terrible. Do you have some advice?

I recommend taking the time to set proper audio levels every single time you shoot. Think of your audio levels as being as important as the focus of your camera (because they ARE equally important). Sometimes you check focus multiple time for a single shot. The same goes for audio levels. Here's an article I wrote on the subject, and it's geared specifically for camera people - www.sam-mallery.com/2013/02/how-to-set-audio-levels/ Also, for shooting outdoors, using proper wind protection on your NTG2 is very important. You should be using one of these - amzn.to/2mDOOZM

Thanks for answer, wind isnt problem, we have Rode Blimp. But noise in audio. Sound is not clear as I wish :/

Are you always getting the mic as close as possible to the sound source? This usually means having the mic just on the edge of the frame, or hidden behind an object in frame. Your NTG2 sounds best when it's right next to the sound source. Move the mic away, and by the time it is 3 feet away (1 meter), your audio is going to start sounding bad.

No, still same problem. Mic is near to the source and noise is terrible..

Its the NTG2. I've never been a fan of Rode's shotguns, signal to noise ratio sucks and vocals always sounded dead and lifeless. Get an Audio Technica AT875r, for the price you can't beat it!
