An in-depth, hands-on review of the Tascam DR-70D audio recorder. I go out of my way to show you how its features can help you in video production. Be sure to read my even more detailed blog post on the DR-70D here: goo.gl/cWUZNI
Last year I made an in-depth review of the Zoom H5, and in that review I remarked how I had been waiting for a company to produce a small recorder that was optimized for video production. Not too long after that review was published, Tascam announced the DR-70D, a compact recorder that is even more optimized for use in video production.
I can go on and on about the pros and cons of the new Tascam DR-70D, and I do exactly that in the post over at my blog. I have a separate post that explains how you can avoid a "hiss" issue with the "camera out" jack on the Tascam DR-70D. Be sure to read that post here: goo.gl/qk7v6t

This unit works great at weddings! I use ch. 1 to record a direct feed from the DJ's sound system. I use ch. 2 to record lavalier mic sound during the ceremony. I use my DSLR's built-in mic to record stereo ambience. I sync up and mix the 3 sources together in post at the desired levels and it sounds magnificent.

Glad to help. Recording audio separate from video is pretty easy with Final Cut Pro X. You just need to get into the habit of importing the two separate clips back-to-back, and making a synced version once it's in the FCPX browser. It's a little bit of an extra step, but well worth it.

This is an excellent audio recorder. In addition to video production, I've used it to record myself narrating several audiobooks! I set the record level to high, knowing sometimes I'm narrating barely above a whisper. Noise floor is nonexistent, except for whatever noise the mic and the recording space produces.

Great video, glad you explained the why behind it. My question is, once the camera and tascam are recording audio, does this mean, the video file from camera will contain the tascam's audio, therefore, eliminating any syncing in post? Since the camera is burning the tascam's audio signal to the video. I hope so, would save much time in post.

Hey, I see you're connecting the Rode VideoMic Pro to the Tascam, which is great, cos I own the Rode and think about buying the Tascam. Does ist work well together? I have the Tascam DR100ii already and if i plug my Rode into that its too silent, even with the Tascams levels up to 10. If set the Rode to +20db its still too silent and you get a lot of humming. I guess thats because the Rode is designed for DSLR inputs and the DR100 for "proper" mics. But thats where I was wondering if your setup works well. Thx.

Question: I am recording in stereo mode with a shotgun mic connected to one of the xlr inputs. Panning is set to center. When i listen to the recording with headphones on the dr70d, i hear the sound on both sides of the headphones. But when i listen to the recording file on the computer, i only hear audio from only one side of the headphones. Is that normal? Is it just how this recorder is built?

Hey Sam, thanks for this. I watched this (and a few other reviews) but ended up opting for the DR-60DMkII, mainly for physical buttons. You mention something very interesting that no other reviews (that I've seen) mention, which is connecting these to the camera and back for monitoring purposes. Alas the camera I currently use (Sony a6000) has neither a mic input nor headphone out BUT I am planning to borrow an Atomos Ninja Blade for a shoot next week. So, my question is: could I employ the same connection principles between the DR-60 and the Ninja as between a camera? Or is there a likelihood of sync issues that affect the 'backup' audio captured by the Ninja?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 7 жыл бұрын
You should be fine connecting the audio from the DR-60D MKII to the Ninja Blade, just as you would a camera.

The one instructional review on KZfaq that brings up "Why would I want to do that?" I wish many more subjects were presented that way. In software especially, plus add in "why you would NOT want to do that." Every choice has consequences down the road. But we don't get warned about that, only told the so called good stuff.

THANK YOU so much for this video!! I actually have a TASCAM DR 60D, and this video is the only video I could find that actually takes the time to explain things to someone new. You gave details on how the thing works and how to use it- which is what I need. Gosh! Thanks again! ( I still don't know what phantom power is though! ha!)
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+Bronwen Felesina I'm glad my video was helpful! That was the goal. Just think of phantom power as electricity that runs through the microphone cable to power the connected mic. Some mics need it, others don't. That's why you need to turn it on and off.
@bronwenfelesina218
@bronwenfelesina218 8 жыл бұрын
+Sam Mallery OK!! I think my mic does not need phantom power- it is a "giant squid omnidirectional microphone" - I can just plug it into the spot you said "external input 1/2"- right? i do not need to set it to "no phantom power" or anything do I?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+Bronwen Felesina I read about your Giant Squid microphone. It requires something called "Plug-In Power" to operate. Plug-In Power is pretty much the same thing as Phantom Power - it's a little bit of electricity that gets sent through the microphone cable to power the connected microphone. Some mics need it, some don't. That's why you can turn it on or off. The difference between the two is that Phantom Power is only for microphones that connect with XLR jacks. The Giant Squid connects with a 3.5mm mini-plug jack, and it requires power to operate, so, it needs to be sent Plug-In Power. It's confusing, I know. Don't worry. This confuses everyone! Anyhow, instructions for how to turn on the Plug-In Power on the DR-70D are on page 20 of its manual - tascam.com/content/downloads/products/867/e_dr-70d_rm_vb.pdf - read and follow those instructions. If you do so, you will not only be turning on Plug-In Power on the recorder, you will also be setting up the recorder to work with your mic.
@Direct19681
@Direct19681 8 жыл бұрын
+Bronwen Felesina The easiest way to understand if phantom power is needed. If your mic takes a battery you don't need a recorder that provides phantom power. If it doesn't, you do.

Nice review, Sam. So this recorder will only do the dual recording mode for a single stereo track, even though it has 4 XLR inputs??
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
Correct. You can't use the "Dual Recording" feature if more than two channels are selected for recording. Also, the two channels you select to record need to be sequential. For example, Channels 1 + 2, or Channels 3 + 4. Selecting channels 1 + 3 won't work.
@WatsonWu
@WatsonWu 8 жыл бұрын
That's too bad. Have an upcoming job where I have to record potentially Loud animal sounds. Once they roar, the main tracks will definitely clip. I might buy another DR-40 for this dual recording feature. Wish Sound Devices would include this dual mode. 😉

It sounds like you're looking for a recorder that has time code. Tascam does make a recorder like this, but it's not the DR-70D that I cover in this video. @HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Headphone outputs are typically consumer line-level signals, so you can connect it to headphones or to a mixer. You would want to connect it to a stereo line channel on the mixer, if possible, using a y-cable from 3.5mm male to what ever the stereo channel offers for input, most likely dual 1/4" TS or RCA.

I like the fact that you focused on how you use the unit than how it sounds. It this price range, honestly, there isn't enough difference to make it an important factor (in my opinion). I wish the Dr70D had the dedicated phantom power switch like I have on my DR60. I intend to use the Dr70 a little differently that what you demoed. I intend to put a microphone mount on the top and attach my Rode NT4 to it and place it on the front edge of the stage. I record live theatre, concerts and dance recitals primarily. The house audio will be pumped into my Dr60. Each of the three camera will also have their own shot guns for scratch audio and a back up. I am currently using a Dr44WL on the front of the stage. I bought it because of the wireless but the wireless is too unreliable. It also doesn't easily mix the channels into a stereo track so I have to do that in post. I hate the way you adjust the levels on this. Gerry in Calgary.
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 7 жыл бұрын
Are you interested in this recorder primarily because it can rest on the floor and act as a low-profile microphone stand for your Rode NT4? If so, that would be an interesting way to use the DR-70D, but I would be concerned about the NT4 picking up vibration noise from the ground. I would recommend using a shockmount for the microphone on top of the recorder. Unfortunately, the NT4 is a large and heavy microphone. On their website, Rode claims that their SM3 shockmount is compatible with the NT4. Here a link: amzn.to/2ovJMm4. I've used that shockmount, and in my opinion, using an NT4 in it is a little sketchy. It pushes that shockmount to its limit, and the SM3 isn't a very strong design to begin with, especially for its $50 price. Even though it's a bit more, I would go with the Rycote 041123 InVision - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839537-REG/Rycote_041123_INV_BH_InVision_Indoor_Microphone.html/pageID/accessory/BI/20531/KBID/15501. It's $35 more, but what you're getting is the best shockmount in the world for the NT4. The NT4 is a great sounding mic, and that Rycote can be used with the NT4 on the DR-70D and in lots of other ways, too. One more caveat: you need an adapter to attach that Rycote shockmount to the DR-70D. It's this female 1/4 20 to male 3/8 thing - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546536-REG/Manfrotto_088LBP_088LBP_Female_1_4_20_to.html?sts=pi/BI/20531/KBID/15501

+KB God I think you have the DR-70D set to record a single mono track, but you have that channel panned in the center. Since it's panned in the center, you hear it in both ears when you monitor through your headphones while you shoot. But, since the recorder is only making a single mono track, when you bring the file into your editing software, you only hear it on one side, because that's what it is. There is nothing wrong with this. It makes sense to only record a single mono track when you're only using a single mono shotgun mic. It just means you need to pan that track in the center in your editing software, or duplicate it and pan one left and the other right.

Well, even though the Tascam DR-70D has features for cameras that have headphone outputs (and the Canon 70D lacks a headphone output), this is still a good choice to use with your camera. Mainly because the Tascam DR-70D is easier to mount to a camera.

Sam, thanks for the video. It was very helpful and influenced me to buy a DR70D. Since you have obviously more experience than I do, can you point me to any online resources where I can find help troubleshooting recordings? It took a few test recordings to get settings right but I thought things were working. Today, we had a session with customers. We tested the mics (2 remote sennheiser) and listened to the entire session on headphones connected to the DR70D. Everything sounded great - and still does. But when we move the SD card to the PC to edit, we can barely hear the audio - even turning the PC sound to max. Put the card back in the DR70D and it sounds great. Just need help troubleshooting issues like this and wonder if you know of some resources? Thank you again.

when using an external mic when recording can you disable the builtin mics on the tascan
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. You can go into the menus on the DR-70D and disable its built-in mics. You can plug in an external mic (or multiple external mics) and only record sound from them, and not use the built-in mics at all.
@grimperpl

I bought Tascam DR70 some time ago and found it quite noisy. To record voice with internal microphones I had to set gains to high and then turn the level up to the end. I don't think it's the proper setting to hear anything with this device. I'd like to check if my unit s faulty or not. I saw EytschPi42 video so it can be similar problem. What was your setting to record the voice in internal mics?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+grimperpl What settings were used isn't nearly as important as placement. How far away was the voice you were recording with the built-in mics? If the person's mouth was any further away than a couple of feet away, then it will sound bad. This isn't the fault of the DR-70D. This is true with any microphone. That's why you need to put lavalier mics on people and to get shotgun microphones within a couple of feet of their mouths with boompoles.
@grimperpl
@grimperpl 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for fast response! I was holding it, so it could be as far as 30 inches from my mouth. I the meter on the screen showed zero at low gain. My point is - I could do something wrong: click the wrong button or setting, a normal thing when you're learning to use the divice. What were your settings in your test recordings? I can see levels in the mid range, but what were the settings of the gain in the menu?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+grimperpl I shot the video a while ago and I don't recall what settings I used. If I recall, the DR-70D has a gain option above High which is High+ (or something). You can try messing around with that. The thing you should keep in mind is that the built-in mics on the DR-70D are really just there for ambient recordings, and for basic utility recording. They shouldn't be thought of as good microphones to use to capture a voice in video production. The only mics you should use to capture dialog in video production are explained in this KZfaq video of mine - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hqeXga2VnNXYhX0.html

I cannot get my VU meters to work. What am I doing wrong? First Time user for my Tascam DR70D. I have a boom mic connected to 1/L in Mix mode and I see nothing on my meters. I also cannot get the built in mics to work or see them working on my VU Meters, Why?

Hey man, I just got this recorder. Every time I record, it seems that I am only getting audio on one side (left). I only have one mic plugged into the first channel, and I have its pan set to center. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+Keller Moore Welp, one of the drawbacks of the DR-70D is the lack of physical controls, so you likely have something funky going on in the menus for input settings. Double check everything. Try a different input. Fiddle around with the menus. It's quirky.
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
+Sam Mallery I thought about it overnight, and remembered a setting you should check. Every channel can be set to record a MONO or a STEREO track. If you're only using one mic, set this to MONO. I know this seems counterintuitive, because you want that single track in the center, but give it a try.

Thanks for this informative video. I do a lot of broadcast 3 and 4 mic and one thing I haven't seen addressed in any of these videos with the Tascam DR70D that I know is possible with the DR60D and that is the ability to monitor each channel separately through the headphones without the other channels in the mix. That is, I've mic'd up my first guest and I'd like to listen to them independently of anyone else so I can set their mic level independently . . and . . I don't want to have to unplug anyone else to accomplish this task. BTW, I would like to then do this for channel 2, then 3 and finally 4, so that I know the quality of each guest before the program begins. Moreover, during recording (filming) perhaps Mic 3 sounds like it might be at the edge of clipping, can I monitor that channel separately without affecting the recording and therein make adjustments. Can all this this be done on the DR70D? If so, how?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 6 жыл бұрын
Dr Dimento As far as I know, soloing the individual channels for monitoring on the DR70D is not possible. This feature is available on the more advanced Tascam DR701D. I wrote about that feature in this post: www.sam-mallery.com/2015/12/first-thoughts-on-the-tascam-dr-701d-field-recorder/

I am considering buying a recorder like the 70D for musicvideos (camera to be used Canon EOS 700D). Now looking for a wireless system to be connected with the main mixer, so the video would automaticly get the mixer sound (At least for one camera). My question: waht wireless system do you use and, the most important, can they be connected to the mixer to get that sound?
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 7 жыл бұрын
This kind of thing is a bit tricky. Mixers typically output line-level stereo signals. Your camera has a stereo mini-plug mic-level input. The vast majority of wireless systems are not stereo. They are mono. They are meant to transmit the signal from a single microphone, not two signals from stereo line-level output. What you're talking about can be done with two Sennheiser G3 wireless systems. But, you're going to have to mount two receivers on your camera. You can do this, but it will require a lot of practice. You need to learn how to patch the transmitters to the mixer with the proper adapters. Then you need to set correct gain structure from the mixer to the sensitivity settings on the transmitters. You then need to properly set the AF OUT setting on the two wireless receivers mounted to the camera, and lastly, you need to properly set the audio input level on the camera. Not for the faint of heart, and not for beginners.
@Kaasmof
@Kaasmof 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explicit answer. Now, I am not fainthearted, but don't like to do more then I need to - so I simply keep it the way we did it until now: Connect the Mac to the mixer and record direct to the Mac, then as we edit the video, we put the sound to it. Simple and saving some work :)

Just wondering. You can use the line out to connect to the Canon 70d and monitor sound through the microphone out on the Tascam 70d.
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways Жыл бұрын
You can use the line out on the Tascam to connect to the mic input on the Canon 70D. You can plug your headphones into the Tascam and listen to the audio you're recording in the Tascam. But you can't hear the sound you're recording in the Canon camera, because the camera doesn't have a headphone output. So, if the sound being recorded in the camera is distorting, you will not be able to hear it.

I'm trying to line this thing up with my Canon 80d. It does record the xlr-inputs into the camera file, yet It mixes them all up into one track (left). Right track is simply deactivated, it won't even allow the int camera mic to run while It is connected to the DR-70d. What am I doing wrong? The DSLR is of course set to manual, but it doesn't give me recording options other than levels and monitor output...
@HiddenDriveways
@HiddenDriveways 8 жыл бұрын
You should check the "Pan" settings of the inputs. They may all be panned left. This is explained on page 18 of the reference manual, under the "Adjusting the input balance" section: tascam.com/content/downloads/products/867/e_dr-70d_rm_vb.pdf As far as your internal camera mic not working, this is normal. When you plug something into the mic input on a camera, it disables the built-in camera mic.
