Steve, luv ya man,but PLEASE, *PLEASE* stop continuously interrupting people, ESPECIALLY someone who talks a lot like Fremer. That absolutely constant interrupting and talking over your guests, I'm sorry I promise I don't mean to be mean, but it makes watching this VERY difficult. If you can please just stop doing that and let your guests talk, you will be Golden! 😊 Ask your family if they watch your videos, see if they agree. But, if you insist on doing that, I don't know if i can sit through a whole hour of constant interrupting. Please, just let the person finish, then talk, okay mate. Just try'n to help here Bro... ***EDIT And, I do have to add, honestly, more towards the end when you seemed to be a little calmer, it did flow a lot better and was more enjoyable. So, please keep up the good work with what you are doing. And just, like the rest of us, keep trying to refine yourself and get better and better!

Wow, I’d REALLY love to see Mr. Fremer’s record store interview series… hopefully he can get the time to edit and post those soon! Such a great idea and I’d be fascinated to hear all these record store owners from various parts of the country speaking on how their business started, how things have evolved, and how they’re doing in the current market.

In the fairly early 1980s we were given the most wonderful thing. Something cleaner sounding than half speed mastered lps, that never wear out or mistrack on either inner grooves or any part of the recording. Something that has no noise, no ticks and pops or warp bumps; only the music. Even if mishandled to the point that there are scratches. Clearer sound than most peoples phono cartridges are capable of. More perfect pressings than vinyl pressing usually are. Small enough where a thousand of them can fit in a space small enough not to overwhelm the room(s). What do people want? They gave us a dream. Of course with the early cd players, we had no idea of the amazing sound on the discs. The more astute heard hardness and brittleness in the highs. Edgy not very natural sound. Thin and harsh at times. But...in retrospect, it was the players for the most part. The better cd players have none of those bad qualities. Not even a hint of them. So is buying vinyl masochistic? At least partly it is. I like the bigger cover and lyrics big enough on the inner sleeve that you can read them. I still collect vinyl too, and wouldn't give up either cds or lps. But cds are like this great gift bestowed upon us. that owners of top flight digital equipment now appreciate, while others ignore it and continue to think of it as inferior, because of the early failings of its playback gear. Were the earliest turntables that great?

Seems like Fremer just has records that are mainstream and the most accessible. He hasn’t gone deep at all in discovering obscure great music! Just the same old people over and over!

MF gets a fair amount of criticism but life’s too short to get worked up over a record and one persons opinion. Enjoy the banter and remember MF is likely a whole lot more knowledgeable about vinyl than most of us .sure, he’s annoying at times but aren’t we all ? If you are a fan of the original - do yourselves a favour - go out a purchase a copy of Teal for the Tillerman 2. It is fantastic. Having been on several of Steve’s round tables with others I know this is a free flowing discussion among his invited guest(s). The fact that this one only has one guest doesn’t make it an interview. In my mind, this is an interactive dialogue which we are allowed to “eavesdrop” on between two people taking about topics of our interest. The idea of a specific time allocation isn’t something I’ve even considered as relevant given it isn’t an interview inquiry but a free exchange of ideas. Just my two cents.

Steve asked me to comment so here goes: I’m not surprised some didn’t enjoy this “chat” and that’s because Zoom calls are not good venues for “chats”. When you “chat” among friends there are always interruptions. It’s expected but Zoom interactions especially with two people need structure. I thought this was going to be a Q&A interview but it wasn’t. Steve didn’t prepare questions or have an agenda beyond a nebulous opening question for which I really didn’t have an answer. From there I winged it because dead air is deadly. The conversation couldn’t “veer off course because there was no course to veer off of. About half way through I had a feeling some viewers would be unhappy but I figured I’d take the hit which is why I quipped about talking too much…but I felt obliged be keep going… I think Steve will get fewer negative comments with better structured interviews and fewer “chats”!!!!

Many other opinions but I don't have the time to mention again)) Plenty of disinformation (Nobody is interested or buying Van Halen these days?) Plenty of redundant Jazz talk (This time it is labeled "Fun" Jazz....which to most of us is still Jazz....😴😴😴😴) I ultimately got exactly what I expected from this 75 minute "chat".... some entertaining moments and some solid opinions from you both....some frustrating, irritating moments of both of you talking non stop and interrupting each other....but overall I enjoyed it for the most part. I've seen you in the past on these interviews in this type of forum and I will try to watch again in the future when they show up in my KZfaq feed. Love it! On "The Cars" album. I have the new Rhino 'audiophile' release and found it a bit muffled and overly compressed. I am not a fan of Optimal Media record pressings because they tend to have an audible rumble between tracks. Thankfully, the tracks are almost segued together so the rumble can only be heard, if at all, for a split second. When I really notice the rumble is after I have digitized the album and am splitting the tracks. That rumble is visible on a graph and I see that same rumble on other records pressed by Optimal. I have other versions, but a later version I like better is another Rhino re-issue, R1-135, on black vinyl. Listening to "My Best Friends Girl", the sound is brighter to me, like the claps being like I am there and the ambience is better. Plus, the vinyl is much cleaner sounding with the only annoying surface noise is the lead-in groove. Of the original release, as Elektra used multiple pressing plants, to me, the copies marked CSM(Columbia Santa Maria) sound the best. Iron Mountain. I thought that facility belonged to Sony. Jack and Ozzy Osbourne's travel show, they went to Iron Mountain and Ozzy got to listen to some of his original Columbia master tapes. So, what about the fires at Universal Hollywood which was said to have destroyed all the masters? Dave Mason stated that his masters for his "Alone Together" album were destroyed, so he didn't have them to use for a 50th Anniversary special edition.
@trackingangle929
@trackingangle929 Жыл бұрын
No compression was applied in the mastering. How Optimal adds rumble is something I don’t understand. I don’t hear it and my speaker are flat to 20Hz. From online comments I’d say your experience with this reissue is an outlier…

@@trackingangle929 Well, even being half-deaf, I can often tell an Optimal pressing from hearing the rumble between tracks. I have confirmed it looking at a graph of the recording. And I tried several different copies with the same results. I would add a snap shot but I don't think you can on KZfaq. Sometimes, when a record is pressed simultaneously at multiple pressing plants, there is a variation in sound. One example is the Beatles stereo album boxes. It was pressed at both Optimal and Rainbo Records. As you know they were made from the same Abbey Road master discs. In listening and digitizing both, I noticed the Optimal rumble on their versions, which was absent from the Rainbo pressings. Also, I found the vinyl to be a bit quieter on the Rainbo pressings than the Optimal's. I think that we use a better quality of vinyl in the U.S. Most E.U. pressed records seem to me to have more surface noise. An exception is Pallas of Germany and their associate Record Industry. Even in the U.S. our pressing companies don't always get it right. QRP, in particular, seems to have a problem with off-center pressings. Both they and Optimal both pressed the Beatles' anniversary "White Album". I went through 3 copies of the albums pressed by QRP. The record with Sides 3 & 4 had off-center and edge-warp issues. Sides 1 & 2 were perfect. A local record store had 27 copies returned, so they pulled the remaining copies from the bins. The playing surfaces on the QRP pressings were impressable quiet. So, I ended up returning my copies and buying the Optimal-pressed 4LP boxed set. Although there was more vinyl surface noise and Optimal rumble on Sides 3 & 4 , it didn't have the wow effect of the QRP pressings. Yep, the record stores hated me because I would often return the new albums I bought until I got a suitable copy for myself. Stores like Tower Records didn't like it, but they just shrink wrapped my returns and put them back in the bins with the new records. I can't imagine that only Tower Records did this.

@@stevewestman7774 Most of my records were recorded in 1971 & before. In 1972 I thought the sound on all records were was more harsh, that the sound wasnt as good. I was suspicious that something solid state transistor digital was added, but 2 sound engineers swore I was wrong. You here all this talk that digital didnt start till the very late seventies. Michael Fremer from Stereophile confirmed I was right all along. Fremer JUST said this, so I googled it up what he said. The Doors and The Elektra Records Sound Part 1. Also below when it is talking about DISCRETE recorders, it's talking about tiny tralnsistor Integrated integrated IC transistors that dont sound as good, for example early seventies Sony stereo amps with more expensive & complicated hand wired transistors sound better than today's IC amps, but still tubes recorders sound better. Guitarists today love guitar tube amps better. Analog Planet www.analogplanet.com › content › doors-and-e... Apr 30, 2010 - When I came back to do some mixing in 1970 it was still the same, except that they changed the console to solid-state. The whole control room was all brick, and it had individual panels of acoustical tile to deaden it down. Basically it was a very live room. The console sat on a platform, which was about six or eight inches off the floor. The tape machine sat behind us; we had an old Ampex 200 three-track, which had separate record and playback electronics so that you could select separate record or playback curves. They had a thing back then called A.M.E., which was Ampex Master Equalization, and then they had N.A.B., so if you recorded A.M.E. and played it back N.A.B., it would come out brighter. It's like recording with Dolby and not decoding. We also had an Ampex 300, I believe, three-track, which I converted over to a four-track with sel-sync (the ability to perform overdubs). BB: No, the room stayed the same from the day I walked in the door, which was about 1963 to 1968. When I came back to do some mixing in 1970 it was still the same, except that they changed the console to solid-state. But anyway, back to the console. Tutti used to go to England a lot, and he purchased a solid-state console over there. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of it. We all thought it was kind of cool. It had a lot of features that the tube console didn't have. It sounded different, you know? Tubes still sounded the best. Anyway, Jac Holzman purchased one as well, and we had it customized for our needs at Elektra Studios. So, that's how the console got there. BB: I still like mono to this day, because there aren't any distractions. It's like a black and white movie, where you can create incredible dimensions, depth-wise, and hide things. That's very hard to do in stereo. That's because we don't record in stereo: We record multi-track point-source discrete audio. The difference in the mix was when we would open it up to stereo, we would have to change things, because it didn't fall in the same place. Spatially, things would fall into other places. MG: It sounds to me as if the first Doors album had the best high-frequency extension, transient snap, and overall transparency, and that with each album— sonically fine as they are—those qualities seemed to diminish. Would you agree or disagree? BB: I'd agree with that to an extent, because the first album was all tube. Strange Days was done on a tube console, but with a solid-state eight-track. From then on it became all solid-state consoles and solid-state tape machines. There was also this direction that Paul wanted to take it, a more intellectual kind of a sound, not as raw as the first album. The sound started to become more scientific as it went along, a little more clinical, because studios, by and large, are hospitals, they're not places to record music. Technology is the evil person here. MG: I guess that's not fighting technology, it's kind of going around it. BB: Sound since the 1960s has gone backwards instead of forwards, in my estimation. In the recordings that I do today for motion pictures, I use tube microphones, tube microphone pre-amps, and I try to bypass the solid-state consoles as much as possible. It's more open, it's rounder, it has more depth. I can give you an example. If you take a room that has some reverberation— not a chamber, just good clear liveness— and you put an earphone in the middle of the room with a click going through it, so you hear the “tick, tick, tick.” Plug up a good microphone, maybe a (Neumann) U-67 or something like that, split the signal so it goes into a tube microphone pre-amp, and then the solid-state pre-amp, bring them both up on the console, and switch back and forth, and listen. With the tube, you'll hear all the reverberation in the room; the solid-state will close down. Ten times out of 10. So that's somewhat what you're hearing. Even the equalizers back then were tube; we had Pultech EQ-P1A's. MG: What's your opinion of digital multi-track recorded sound, and your opinion of digital recording, period, compared to analog? Which do you prefer? BB: I would venture to say that 95% of the music that I've recorded in the last eight years has been all digital. Digital does not basically sound better than analog, but what it does do, is that the sound doesn't change from what you're recording. With analog, you record it, and when you play it back, you will get a fair representation of what you heard on line-in. Play it back a half an hour later, and it will have changed, there are less highs. Play it a day later, and it will really have changed. The high end just changes, it's a natural process of the magnetism of the particles, and when you magnetize, record them, they change. The magnetic particles have a memory and want to go back to their original inert state. It's just the way it is. In digital, you record it, and it doesn't change. The problem with digital is the quality of the analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters. At this point in time, the A-to-D and D-to-A's are getting where you can record on it and it doesn't sound “digital” anymore. “Digital” meaning that it sounds cold. “Cold” meaning that digital doesn't show you all of the details, like the depth of the reverb and harmonic room tone. Because there's lack of detail, and especially lack of harmonics going way out, that sound would seem colder, and "digital." Right now, I'm recording 96 K, 24 bit, and whew! It's good! I mean, you're really, really hard pressed to tell it from the source.

@@mitchabate well the weekly round tables that Westman hosts are not really about interviewing. They are always a loose conversation or round table. Which is literally in the title every week.
