This video features a Zoom interview I did with two audiophile friends - Doug and Dave - from Louisiana. You've seen them featured in previous videos, but there's been some substantial updates and new stuff to share.
Doug got his custom preamp from SMc Audio and Dave has embraced a total Holo front end with their DAC and Preamp. Both guys are also fans of analog tape and have great rooms.
Dave has dedicated a great amount of effort to this dedicated room and it gets rave reviews. He will share some of his tips and treatments. While he has great audiophile gear by any measure, it performs even better than more expensive gear in lesser quality rooms.
For various recommended gear and vendors see my website at audiophilejunkie.com/

Dave's dipole speakers have built in wings; IIRC Sound Lab used to offer wings for their big electrostatic speakers. Some people put maggies next to a sidewall, a sort of half-baffle arrangement. Regardless, I think dipole speakers get a following for good reasons. Notice how the big boxes (Von Schweikert, Wilson, etc.) put rear firing tweeters on their boxes? Even PS Audio has done that with their new FR30. The scattering of the higher frequencies from the rear waves (or back tweeters) gives a sense of space that one doesn't get with just front-firing boxes. Also I notice his room is irregularly shaped, which I think really helps prevent overly strong nodes and antinodes. And putting his chair at the interface of two different size/shape room halves reminds me of sitting in a concert hall just in front of the mezzanine lobes. Good video and it drives home the importance of the listening environment. 90%+ of all the (English language) audiophile channels on KZfaq are just gear pushers (often with Amazon affiliate links).

The wings are similar to the older Infinity and Genesis designs. A difference is that they are swept back creating a kind of reverse facing horn.

Hi Jason I can certainly attest to that DAC! l have only just not even a week ago bought the same May kte. I would have to say it's the best DAC under 50k I've ever heard, and I've heard most of them. I'm running a diablo 300 and Wilson alexia's with a lumin U1 with X1 external power supply. The speakers have disappeared, the soundstage is amazing and the focus on individual musicians is nothing short of mind-boggling, with the room correction thanks to you. The speakers havr pretty much completely gone from the room. It feels like I'm getting my own private performance every time l push play.🎧😁👍

I wanted to make a slight correction to the video. Doug had asked me about going through digital conversion when I was discussing my new Holo Serene preamp and I thought at the time he was asking about that preamp. When watching the video I see that he was asking in an overall sense. My Xilica 4080 crossover is indeed digital and I do use it for manual correction of remaining bass issues.

Oh my gosh this is terribly interesting and clearly these guys are really into the electronics but I'm wondering is all this encouraging or discouraging. I just wanna good clean system with quality components that don't take center stage and distract from a really nice sounding system.

something about rooms with vaulted ceilings, every one I've experienced seemed to be great for acoustics.

And yet I have read in so many places to avoid such ceilings. Left bare there can be some odd focusing issues. The trick is simply to treat that peak properly as you would any other surface. The visual impact of such height and space I believes adds to the overall illusion of acoustic space.

I agree room is so important! On a digital system. For me test track is Rebecca Piegion " Spanish Harlem". Rebecca Piegion should appear in your room so solid her head is carved out like granite and you can see her hair as well. Other tracks I play is John Mayer live in LA "Belief" The cymbals near right channel before he sings should be so solid you can see it wavering in the air in your room with perfect timbre. Please tell me if your system can do this? I've heard many systems over $100k can't do this!

That's a good test track that many use. I'll have to use it in future videos. I've had it for many years.

I find that it does, but I am sure that it may not be up to the best point source designs. But, they can have issues with the extended sound field as well.

I have no idea 🤷 how to relate velocity (speed) using bass traps. Very confusing and What works in one person’s room will not work in another persons room! rooms are so completely independent they only have in common is drywall, screws and wood studs and of course what’s behind the drywall in the wall cavities fiberglass most likely. Newer room additions with mineral wool, if their exterior walls

It can be very confusing when trying to control bass issues. The videos put out by Acoustic Fields are very informative on the differences between velocity and pressure trapping. Basically, velocity traps are often made of a rigid fiberglass type material and designed to have the bass waves pass through them to become attenuated. This is why it is recommended for them to be spaced away from the walls when mounting. This allows sound waves to pass through to a wall, be reflected back and pass through once again. Because of the physical size of these wavelengths these generally only work well with upper bass and higher frequencies. Pressure based bass traps are true bass traps in that they can work much lower in frequency. They can be complex to build and expensive to buy. They are also wall mounted, but do not let the bass waves back out into the room once they enter. Their internal structure is designed to dissipate them. Had I known more about these differences when I had built my room, I would have used a mix of both where appropriate.

so modest electronics and speakers in a custom designed room would sound better than an ultra high end system in an awful room with poor acoustics....?
@AudiophileJunkie

You would think that's common knowledge, but just look at audio shows where only great gear is brought into the room... No room treatments or anything like DSP to address problems. Then, look at KZfaq channels that exclusively focus on gear and never the room. It's one of the biggest issues and dumbest things in our hobby.
@AudiophileJunkie
@AudiophileJunkie 2 жыл бұрын
That's only temporary... Once people sit down and listen, then the person with the room treatment is easily more impressive than the one with a fancy chassis.

@@mikepawntee2425 When listening in an untreated room you are hearing the room influence on the system. But, in a properly treated room it is the system you are listening to.
