Mopho, not unlike the Blofeld, was very much a child of its times. Back then, despite 20 and 30 years old synths reaching absurd prices on the used market, the thinking among the mainstream music hardware manufacturers still was "surely beginner musicians don't _really_ want an entry level priced truly analog synth? they really want just PCM samples of analog synths, or at best a VA, right?" When Mopho launched in 2009 the only alternative budget analog synths I was aware of were the MFB synths (if you happened to live close to Germany) and the DSI Evolver. Maybe the Little Phatty, though it was three times the price. Only in the next 2 years were the Doepfer Dark Energy, Vermona Lancet and Moog Slim Phatty released - still just a handful of models. For that reason Mopho had to have a limited interface. Dave Smith wanted to cut down on the price as much as possible, because as absurd as it may look today, it wasn't yet a given that people would be actually willing to pay a premium for an entry level true analog synthesizer. It was also strongly oriented towards the studio use, because again, few people believed entry level musicians would actually want to play live with analog synths - after all, they are so cumbersome and all...
@AudioPilz
@AudioPilz 3 жыл бұрын
I remember. EVERYBODY wanted analogs back then (or stupid all-in-one boxes;)
@tomaszmazurek64
@tomaszmazurek64 3 жыл бұрын
@@AudioPilz Yeah, everybody wanted analogs, especially in the markets (like Poland) where there were not a lot of vintage gear available. And yet, unless I am forgetting something, it took Korg till 2016 to release their first not toy like modern analogue synth in the form of the Minilogue. And Korg was "the quick one" of the Japanese big 3.

There was a time when the Curtis chips were basically made of gold and there weren’t any cheap reproductions. Making a good analog polysynth basically depends on those little magic boxes.

this little-synth-that-could basically got DSI back into the game, so I respect it for that alone. as for cheap reproductions, the analog revival was well underway way before that, no pun intended.

Oh gawds, I'd forgotten about the evil banana box (of doom). This is going to be an episode that doesn't disappoint! And of course you went with the box instead of the keyboard version, as the box version was really reviled back in the day... I actually really wanted one back in the day, but didn't have anywhere near enough cash for one, and the user interface being so menu-divey was just... Not my thing. But on the other hand, I'm also very much so a "one knob per function" kind of guy, probably why I loved my old dotcom modular synth so much (had to sell it back in the day due to... a whole host of things). I was lent a Tetra by a friend and although it's a great sounding machine, the lack of a usable UI coupled with the fact that you have to actually buy editing software (which isn't easily transferable) from a third party company is just absolutely ridiculous. These things could easily have been riding high on the "modern classics" list if only they'd made them easier to work with, both inside and outside the box.

a keyboard version doesn't add knobs per function, only doubles the voices. easily amended with touch osc template though.
@naoidfpaiourej3299
@naoidfpaiourej3299 2 жыл бұрын
@@brmbkl Yes that's right It doesn't provide a knob-per-function as that 's not what the x4 has. Despite having toggle buttons for cycling between LFOs and envelopes etc however I still find the increase in user friendliness you get from having the x4's 18 or so knobs is a huge improvement over the the Tetra's 8 knobs and extensive menu diving. One thing I would add though, is that the cost for both units combined in the second hand market brings the total outlay up into the region where there are other 8 voice alternatives available like a Prophet Rev-2 for example. My combination was bought in stages over about 5 years after getting fed up with programming the Tetra through software/menus.
@seanluke3052
@seanluke3052 3 жыл бұрын
Yet another Edisyn supported unit getting the Bad Gear treatment. The Mopho is almost exactly 1 voice module taken directly from the Prophet '08, plus audio in and subosc. In fact Edisyn's Prophet '08 editor supports all Mopho versions plus the Tetra in a unified editor -- they are basically the same machine. The main problem with the Mopho is of course the menu diving. But you can use the Prophet '08 controls to program the Mopho directly. Think of it as a 1-voice Prophet expander.

In addition to leads, it serves very well for funky baselines, with the caviat that one can forgive the oscillators for being DCOs.(the curtis filters more than make up for this). Once the mods are programmed well, the front panel knobs are not an issue. Use a keyboard with velocity and after touch and the parameters come to life, The sequencer slew makes for some sick retro trance lines, and anyother music that uses portomento with pitch sourcing a bunch of modded parameters. Try it with a Future Retro zillion endless sounds.

It was a nightmare really but for me it was like kinda testing how far i could take that quirky af mono synth. Chaos Club - Hyperdrive if you were wondering XD

@@AudioPilz Yeah, it's got an even worse problem than the MoPho; tweaking more than one knob at a time isn't really an option because they'll fight for control of the one parameter at a time you can work on. Also, it's a really bad "just mess around to get a sound" synth because there's so many "dead spots" where the wrong setting will basically derail the sound, produce no sound, or just make it awful. It gives you a lot of options and some of them are not very musical, or not what you need for the sound you want. The manual I have even has a section devoted to the "I can't hear anything/why don't notes play/the sequencer won't play" settings debugging. It's great if you have a specific plan and it's got a ton under the hood but you gotta go in with a plan or it's not going anywhere.

The Mopho Keys was a legit synth. I just can’t with this GUI though. I can’t. I know a lot of people don’t care for the tone of the gen 1 DSI synths, but personally I feel they are decent and unique enough to be worthwhile. I admit my Rev2 and OB-6 sound sweeter, but I still use the Evolver keyboard all the time. I don’t have a Mopho keyboard anymore, but I liked it when I did. It just seemed a little redundant with the Evolver, which is more interesting to me.

@@AudioPilz I have an Alesis QS5 from 1995, and the manual recommends the EV-5. However, nothing happens if you plug the EV-5 into Pedal 1 because none of the factory patches are mapped to it. You have to manually assign the filter and effects parameters for each patch. The expression pedal really does make the synth sound great, but it took 27 years to figure out!

@@AudioPilz of course, one of the things I would never get rid of. JV1080, DX7, Tetra, Evolver, Jupiter 6, Access Virus B. As you can see, quite a mixture (I don’t know how many synths I have bought, traded for, got as compensation or whatever and then sold/gave away) But these guys stay:) as they have more than just technical value for me, JV and DX were devices I learnt inside out when I was starting, I had no manual for JV in 1996, you can imagine how many wrong concepts I built and scratched until i figured those two out. Then I got Jupiter 6 somewhere around 2001. Then I got Mopho, Tetra and Evolver. I thought I don’t need another synth ever again;)

Another suggestion, any Casio keyboard with the Hex Synth engine! Privia PX-5s (which I own but its way too much menu diving for me) or Casio XW-G1. The Hex engine sounds amazingly good, but it is so cumbersome to edit that you'll end up using it as a rompler and hate it as much.

I recently got a Tetra on Reverb (for a fair price, despite the crazy spike in the last year). Yeah, it’s nearly impossible to tweak parameters with the knobs & buttons.
