I’ve met this gentleman and Sunshine 2 years ago while working as an over the road truck driver. They were the kindest and friendliest bunch I’ve ever met.

I've watched dozens of these videos but I have to say that this one hits pretty hard. I can't imagine being in his shoes and losing your only solace and friend in the world due to cold blooded cruelty. The actions of these officers is reprehensible and they should absolutely he harshly punished. I just hope that this man gets the justice he deserves and can recover from this absolute nightmare. Nobody acting in good faith deserves this kind of cruelty.

Hearing him cry for help and scared gave me chills as i too was once kidnapped by the police department. Although, I wasn’t assaulted like this vet, i knew my rights were being violated and there was nothing i could do. Thank god my mother was there in time to be a witness before anything else happened.

I’m from Shelby , NC , which is a town over from Gastonia. Gaston county police force are all crooks. The fact that they tasted the dog angers me to my core . The dog was defending her owner, it’s a service animal. I bet money these officers are still holding a badge.

This made me tear up. Brooks, the female cop, created the whole situation. She refused to accept that maybe her interpretation of events was wrong and didn't want to hear his side of things. Everything that happened, even indirectly like the death of the dog, was her fault. She is an example of the worst kind of cops: those who see the poor or homeless as less than people and thus not part of the community they serve. Her ego trip caused needless suffering and the death of an innocent animal.

The fact she is harassing a disabled vet is the biggest issue for me.

When I worked in a youth residential center over 35 years ago, we had a tap out system. Which meant any staff observing another staff getting caught up in a power struggle with a resident, could be tapped out by any other staff. At which point the person tapped out needed to leave the interaction and let someone else take over-even if they believe they were handling the matter appropriately (that could all be sorted out later). Is it really the case that police departments haven’t at least figured that out? It’s unconscionable to me that we give people guns and the power to detain and arrest us without proper training.

The more and more I’m listening to this story, and when I seen that sunshine, the dog had been hit after running into traffic, knowing that she formed a bond with the veteran who had PTSD and a whole bunch of mental orders, and the fact that he had to go through that after serving our country is really heartbreaking And it hit me really hard to the point of tears because I really felt for him and I really felt for the dog. It is such a shame to see someone who fought for us to be treated so poorly as a civilian they could have just let him go, and it’s just common sense if you see someone is homeless and someone is giving the money why would you let that bother you as long as the guy was packing up and doing what he was told it’s like leave them alone you already know he has mental issues as a veteran and he’s homeless those two idiots get to go home and have dinner with their family and sleep warm beds. I myself have been in law enforcement for 20 years and what I see today is officers acting outside the color of law or the spirit of the law. Meaning that, “Just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean that you should. Just because you CAN do something doesn’t make it morally right.” We all have an internal moral and ethical compass. And if you’re a law enforcement officer, it’s expected by the people that you serve. This is a fundamental and essential part of being a public servant… of righty upholding the public trust and interest. There’s no wonder the police (considered once as a friend to the people) have been viewed so negatively in recent times. Collectively, their actions have cost them the very confidence of the people. As a consequence, the few remaining good and decent officers, that honour their oath, now struggle to do a job that they were entrusted to do. Police today look to strip the average citizens of the very rights that they swore to protect. They do it and justify it in simple conversations with them. What you say to an officer today will absolutely be used against you in the courtroom tomorrow. The officers that comb our streets, sworn to protect us, are now purging our citizens and jailing them for the smallest offences. Offences that are not commonly known by the general public. Reason being, because our laws change so often. Not just from year to year, but in many cases from day to day. Most of the offences that are committed daily, by the vast majority of the population, are unknown by the general public (not common knowledge)as illegal and are so small that they truthfully shouldn’t have been placed in our statutes as a law to begin with. This gives officers the weapons they need to give R.A.S. (Reasonable Articulable Suspension) to demand your identification, and lawfully justifying their orders for you to provide it to them under, THREAT OF ARREST. Your 4th Amendment Rights are stripped away and you are left with hefty legal fees and fines which then finance the city and state to hire more officers and give pay increases to those who already exist on the force. It’s a vicious cycle that has no means to a good end. And it all starts with the initial contact and their questions. They take what you say and manipulate it to fit a narrative that justifies their tyrannical behaviour. It’s no longer, “To Protect & Serve”, it’s “To Harass & Threaten”. REMEMBER… Your Constitutional Rights are like muscles. 💪🏼 If you don’t flex them, they will eventually go away. If you know that you’re truly standing on the high ground, don’t get tricked or lured into the valley of wrong. Stay aware, stay safe, and never give in to tyranny. Let me get this straight: These two officers arrested a homeless veteran with mental illness for minuscule crimes and then tased his disability support dog?! I have watched many videos on ATA. I have never been so upset at an officer's action. Indeed, "ego" fueled this entire encounter. These officers have the wrong temperament for the job and do not protect and serve. Their actions were egregious across the board and merited the termination of their jobs. Rest in peace, Sunshine.

I am a veteran. I watch a lot of these videos. The thought of him trying to end his own life because the loss of Sunshine, perhaps maybe one of the few true friends he has (not to mention the care she provides for him) literally made me get up and take a moment. How awful, how disheartening, how inhumane this whole situation is.

I don't get angry very easily, but watching the reprehensible and pernicious conduct displayed in this video has me absolutely fuming. Those officers had such a vile and observable contempt for this homeless man. So much so, that they deliberately escalated it so they could inflict punishment on him because of it. And the one showing such a lack of empathy to so blatantly lie about his service dog biting him as an excuse to justify using the taser on her. Not because he thought she would bite his partner, but because he knew that doing so would inflict massive emotional anguish to a homeless veteran who they already view as less than human...

This is one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen. I’m a vet and I’ve been where this guy was at, just not homeless. Thank god for family. My dog was the only thing that got me through it. I have no words…both of those officers are the most deplorable kind of human beings. Right up there with child murders and pedophiles. As soon as he identified as a disabled vet with ptsd they should have offered to buy him a fucking meal and asked him if there was anything the city could do for him in order to keep him for panhandling. Unbelievable, unacceptable, un-American and unforgivable. I won’t verbalize the things I hope karma sends there way.
