Dumas was a serial writer. At the time, the main way for writers to make money was to release their stories a chapter at a time in newspapers. All the chapters then got compiled into a novel once the whole story was finished, which kind of explains the episodic feel of the book. Love the Count. One of my favorites of all time. Glad you enjoyed it.

Yeah, my version is 1500 pages. Maybe the print is bigger. I love it, and I probably wouldn't want to read it if they cut so much out of it. It may be a bit episodic, but it overall contributes to the buildup to the end, and makes it a more full reading experience. Dumas was a genius.

I love how much you loved the Count of Monte Cristo! I read it for the first time about ten years ago and again with my wife a few years later. WOW! is a good summary of my reaction to the book. I love how his revenge plots are so intricate and elaborate but then comes the moment when he realizes too late that he has hurt innocent people in irreparable ways. Earlier he views himself as God's destroying angel, sent to punish those who harmed him but then is humbled dramatically by the end when things start getting out of control.

You should really check out Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren. It's a fantasy classic and it's one of the most beautiful written book in the world. My favourite quote from the book is: 'Jonathan told me how there are things you have to do, even if they are dangerous. "Why is that?" I asked. @rachelgarner4137

OKAY OKAY Robin Hood. I understand this take but I also love this legend and want to defend it a little. First: Howard Pyle's take is certainly a very popular one and one that gets a lot of fancy editions and things, but Robin Hood is a legend built from ballads that were first recorded in the 15th century and are probably older. Hence the episodic nature--the stories started as individual ballads that have become collected together. Second: It is also true that Robin has been given more nobility over the years (in some ways literally--in the first ballads he's always a "yeoman" which is somewhat middle class, and the modern take is to have him closely involved with King Richard's court) and more defined by an interest in helping the poor and downtrodden in the absence of their king. I really like the way Roger Lancelyn Green's retelling approaches this. Third: The story has medieval roots, and so also some medieval values. Tests of strength against strangers isn't really meant to be "mean." The fact that Robin has a strong emphasis on fairness and also /rewards/ those that typically beat him is an honorable thing. It seems weird to say about punching matches, but they really are framed more as "all in good fun." I can't remember if it is in Pyle's, but Robin also usually has a stipulation against harming women or any caravan that has women in it and frequently rewards those that tell the truth and punishes those that lie. It's often a very justice-centric story, whether we agree with his version of justice or not! This is not to say you need to read more or should have liked it more or anything, I just want to give some context for the story. :) A really cool thing about it too is that no one "owns" Robin Hood--it is a story in flux, always being told with new voices. You don't have to like Pyle to enjoy any of the others. Green told my favorite version, but there's also E. Charles Vivian (who reduces some of the episodic feel), Paul Creswick (who starts with Robin as a boy with his family), and dozens more. (I've actually written one and am working on another.) You also don't have to read any of these--no story is for everyone. But Robin Hood has been a story that has resonated with many, many generations, and I think that is really cool.

Rachel Garner, you summed up so well almost everything that I wanted to say! I do have one thing to add. While I love the modern noble Robin Hood with all my heart; I'm a fan of the classic version as well. The thing I've always found most useful in describing what's going on with Medieval Robin Hood (which Pyle's version is somewhat different from, but heavily based on) is to understand that the original character was a classic folk Trickster. He was not considered awesome by the medieval audience because he was moral, but because he was clever. Like other Tricksters (Loki, Coyote, Anansi, and Br'er Rabbit) watching him get into, and then out of, trouble and outsmart others (especially the powerful, or prideful) was the core attraction. Some scholars have also theorized that he might have a relationship with the Green Man, and thus serve as a sort of personification of the Forest itself-the idea of a wild thing which exists alongside human society, but also outside of it, and cannot be subjugated by any king or bishop. This idea might help to explain why rural English peasants found the character so inspiring. Robin underwent some pretty heavy revision in the post-medieval/Victorian era to the tune of making him more of a moral and romantic hero (as well as giving him a class upgrade), and this is basically the version many of us are familiar with today. Going back to Pyle or the original ballads after that can feel pretty weird. As Rachel said though, none of this is to say that you're wrong for not enjoying the book; it's definitely a particular taste and not for everyone!
@rachelgarner4137
@rachelgarner4137 5 жыл бұрын
@@kaylajoy5014 I love the possible connection to the Green Man mythology, since it is so fascinating on its own! I haven't read the ballads as frequently (as I probably should), but that extra information does make a lot of sense. I studied medieval history in college and the Victorians certainly went to town on re-interpreting a LOT of medieval stuff, something that history studies are still trying to disentangle/deconstruct today.

I LOVE the Count of Monte Cristo! It was hard to get through the first half, just because I could not see what prevalence all those scenes held. But when the fireworks show (meaning reveals) begins, it ALL comes back and is SO satisfying. ❤️ I'd love to listen to a chat about that book. It's awesome.

It is difficult in terms of the page numbers and the number of characters and events referenced. If you can tolerate missing a few links here and there (important things are explained again later) and maybe not understanding a reference every now and then it's pretty good to read. PS: some of the books have a pretty grim ending, if that kind of thing diminishes your enjoyment you might want to look elsewhere.

Yes, please do a spoiler discussion of The Count of Monte Christo. Dumas remains one of the giants of literature and popular for good reasons.

I think you were looking for the word periodical at a certain point during your review. This is great; is this like an online book club? I wanna sign up. I've read Alexander Dumas a bit and am in love with his characters too. I think Edmond was always a fairly decent and consistent character... If this wasn't the case he wouldn't have got together with Haydée at the end; right?

I was wondering if you are interested in lite novels. Also I saw that your interested in manga but one of my favorite stories is an anime called code geass. It's similar to death note with a smart antihero protagonist but I enjoyed it much better then death note. I recommend the anime because the manga is very different.

Since you seem to like good plotting, I strongly recommend "Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters. This is not classic(2002 I think?), but it is set in 19th century England, and it has the vibes of Charles Dickens but in a modern language for modern readers. I don't advise reading any blurbs as some people give it rather shallow description and trivialise one of its aspects (It has 4.02 on Goodreads and 4.4 on Amazon to let you know) I don't want to even hint on the plot, but lets just say there was a moment in the book when i had to re-read the page twice, then stop and enjoy the moment. Those who read it know what I am talking about.

The name is pornounced Edmon, the final d is silent. Yes, this was kind of TV series, The readers of the magazine eagerly anticipated the next inslallment. Lastly, you like to reread, take the full version then. As for the Robin Hood, this is a good read for a 10 year old boy. And these legends are widely used and retold.

Please read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles for Halloween. you will enjoy The Vampire Lestat,because It's the second book in the series and it's a prequel/sequel to Interview with The Vampire. Anne Rice borrowed a lot of elements from Dumas' and it's really cool how it came together that tie-in with "Interview with The Vampire". Merphy, probably you will fall in love with Lestat's character and he's like the Vampire verison of the Count,but at least he has redeemed himself later on in the books. You even love his personality, he's even like Deadpool. 😀 He have very enjoyable sense of humor.
