Gotta love that beginning, it describes an emotion I have never felt before.

I have such a musical crush... There's no other way I can say it. I can always recognize his playing from all the other violinists. He just yanks at my heart strings.

They get the beautiful opening right. They play it as it should be played, mysterious and haunting, the first performance I've found on YT that is.

Oh my there is so much to love about this video - first of all I love that Augustin has made a video of a performance of this particular concerto - a concerto and composer that he has championed since I first heard him in 2009, when he played a Bartok sonata in a recital program - incredible - life changing for me even! I love that he has been able to work with Vasily on this, what an incredible pair! I hope they collaborate more in the future! Augustin comes on stage with such a combination of enthusiasm and joy and yet also peace, and Vasily practically floats onto the conductor's stand with a similar confidence and enthusiasm about what they are about to perform! I love this hall and the lighting - it is warm - maybe even hot - and absolutely magical! - with the reddish lights and dark shadows working well with this intense and at times scary sounding concerto. And I looove the videography - such incredible camera work that has the viewer sailing around the hall - in for close-ups of Augustin's intense and handsome face and incredible fingerwork, and then back off for a long view of the whole setting, then back in close to see other instruments - harp, piano, trumpets, etc. I love that this concerto, when compared to how Bach or Mozart or Brahms makes me feel, is almost like a foreign language to me, yet Augustin makes it so thrilling and so beautiful and so understandable for me! Does anyone else wonder what is going on in Augustin's head as he plays through this intense and challenging and surprising work? What is he thinking as he creates this compelling and riveting musical story for us? He does have a wonderful CD and digital recording of the Bartok concerto which I highly recommend - available at Amazon and other places, but the Bartok concerto is one I have yet to hear Augustin play live, so I hope he will perform it somewhere near me in the near future. So many little favorite sections...that cadenza at 12:43 - how??? So many emotions, so many colors...such beauty and perfection! As always, Bravissimo Augustin, you are the absolute best!!

What a night!!! 14:50 Such eclectic interests Bartok had. Listen to this fabulous interval in the style of a Hollywood blockbuster. Fabulous sound engineering (and nobody coughed!) This is such a muscular, meaty piece, full of texture and contrast. It ought to be difficult to listen to, so much dissonance and impulsive intervals and even novelty effects. But it hangs together and even manages to be agreeable and comforting. The soloist is a perfect protagonist. Mature, sure, confident. Nice job.

This performance changed my opinion of the concerto. Fabulous.

Cannot believe the under thousand likes. It just is not believable. He deserves so many more out of 60K views. What is up with this counting? He is remarkable is excellent. Just discovered him and so happy KZfaq has these available. I have not sought out classical music like this as I had no access to hear the outstanding musicians. Please know Augustin you need a new manager who promotes you as you deserve to be, or perhaps you do not have Managers. I see an imbalance of the presentations of some musicians that have an unbalanced resposne compared to the many other outstanding ones. I look forward to searching for all your recordings and keep up with your new concert presentations. You play with a passion and skill tht is exceptional to me.

Astonishing performance by Hadelich of one of my absolute favorite Violin concertos! It was a true existential experience to hear him live in Oslo playing the Ligeti Concerto a few months ago. Wow!

I concur with other people in this comments' section in their praise of Hadelich. His expression and fluidity are astonishing to watch. I have been a fan since I stumbled across him playing Ysaye's famous Ballade a while back. A real asset to classical music.

I have never liked this concerto and gave up on it years ago. It's so complex and, most of the time, I am just wondering what is actually going on. However, Hadelich plays it with such conviction that he almost has me converted. I could hear in the finale much wit and a gentler humour.

I just have to say, this man's hair is MAJESTIC! I mean, yeah his playing is good and all ;), but as a dude who has wavy hair, this is exactly what I aim for with my hair cut, and his stays perfect throughout a whole concert!

For years my favorite performance of this very special work was by Kyung Wha Chung in 1977. But listening and watching you perform made me weep. You match the brilliance and emotional intensity of Bartok's composition perfectly.

incredible performance of an incredible piece. It captures something genuinely animal in the human soul - and I mean this in the best possible sense - the werewolf concerto.

This is one of the greatest violin concertos of all time. This is by far the definitive version. Expressively understood like no other. All of the colors are drawn from the soloists in a way that integrates the sounds, textures and intents throughout the whole score in a way I’ve never heard before. Stunning and deeply moving!!!

Best performance of Bartok 2nd Concerto..Bravo augustin!

I may have a new favorite performance of this concerto. The gold standard for me has always been Isaac Stern with the New York Phil conducted by Leonard Bernstein. He managed to round the sharp edges while not sacrificing Bartok's unique sound, making it more lyrical and Romantic. This performance is similarly pitched, but with the more modern touches brought into better relief. The cadenza is brilliant.

The Bartok #2 is not usually one that gets a lot of applause at the end - the 2nd and 3rd movements are just kind of weird. I remember learning this piece a long time ago and thinking "the first movement is great on its own..." No doubt about it though, Augustin is one of the greatest violinists working out there today. I am so freaking bored with Joshua Bell and Hilary Hahn, it's like those two just hog the spotlight constantly. They're two of the most boring players on the planet. I'm glad Augustin is getting his rightful turn in the spotlight nowadays. He deserves it!!

I never expect perfection from a performance of this most intriguing, beautiful and demanding of violin concertos, but Hadelich really delivers it. Unfortunately, the ending is compromised by the overpowering percussion. We cannot hear the last 17 notes of this piece (strings), which take us right back to the opening notes of the first movement (but in a totally new way). Listen to the Isaac Stern version for reference.
