@@MrMyers758 Yes okay, but the fact that people can't afford to properly feed their family is a problem in and of itself that should be solved anyway. And if it was solved, it would be fine that poorer families get access to cultural events at a substantial discount. (and also thanks to the internet poorer people still have the opportunity to listen to Opera online, it's not the same, but it's certainly not nothing)

@@RAl2O3 Sure. I'm used to hearing Fredrica von Stade sing Cherubino. So it wouldn't surprise me to know that a countertenor sang a female role. But I'd never expect a baritone or a bass to sing an aria a mezzo performs during Carmen. I'm not criticizing the man for singing a mezzo aria. But it's strange to hear him do that when I'm a purist. Since I'm a purist, I usually hate modernist operatic productions, including the Peter Sellers one where Don Giovanni "because" a cocaine addict standing on a Harlem sidewalk where he wore only his briefs. Patricia Raceme sang superbly in Minghella's production of Madama Butterfly, I thought, But I disliked the minimalist sets and the costumes. But I love each second of the movie version of Butterfly with King Huang and Richard Trowel, partly because the sets were rLISTIC AND THE COSTUMES SEEMED JAPANESE. If I produced an opera, my first question would be, "What would delight the composer and the librettist? What would they have wanted it to be like." Sincgers can honor composers with superb performances and maybe even a play roles more convincingly than anyone else has played them. But if I were Mozart attending Sellers's Don Giovanni, I'd feel at least disappointed.

I went to graduate business school with an opera singer. He said he had studied with Placido Domingo. Since this was before the internet, there was no way to check this out. So, I decided, in front of our study group, to ask him to sing something all the while thinking he would bail. He paused for a moment and then opened his mouth. And what came out was short of amazing. We all told him he shouldn’t waste his time in business school but should sing full time. For a moment he teared up. Later, when the study group had left and we were alone I asked him why he seemed upset by what the study group had said. He told me that his dream was to sing, but he neither had the money to pursue it nor the support of his wife. He wound up dropping out of business school and moved to Michigan to run his family’s cemetery business.

I love how you can see his breathing apparatus at work (the singer, I mean of course, haha). The chest is high when he is supporting and the gut is in when he is suspending his air, indicating that the abdominal muscles are at work. Really nice video!

It's called a diaphragm.
@cristinaevans2318
@cristinaevans2318 Жыл бұрын
@Mellie Are you referring to the abdominal muscles or the gut? (Both of which are the same). The diaphragm is at work too but we don't actually have any control over it, due to it being an involuntary muscle. You have control over your intercostals and your abdominal (even the latter kind of work on their own of your setup is correct) and the diaphragm will suspend the air when you have proper control of both. You may already know this, so sorry if I'm preaching to the choir (no pun intended).
@khyrand
@khyrand Жыл бұрын
@@cristinaevans2318 a common misconception among musicians! Check any medical anatomy/physiology text. if the thoracic diaphragm were involuntary (like the heart or intestines), you could not control your breathing at all. There is a respiratory center of the brain that acts as an automatic pacemaker and can override conscious control, but the muscle itself is voluntary.

I have never heard the habanera sung by a man before! We sang it in the school choir in English. I suppose it was easier for the music teacher that way! 😁 Both the pianist and the singer did really well, especially if they had never met before, nevermind rehearsed. Playing for someone to sing can be hard as everyone sings with their own interpretation of the song and every pianist also plays their own way. The musicians are supposed to follow the soloist, but it doesn't always turn out so well! Especially if playing a piano with dead notes! 😂 Well done! 👍

@@sananton2821 I didn't expect a wholesome video like this could attract bitter and sad people but here we are. Are we here to play "vocal coach" experts or appreciate two strangers sharing their passion for music?

Wow! Sometimes life is nice! Appreciate the moment. What a nice person to offer you to sing like that. Funny that the piano is broken in places. Maybe now someone will fix it.

To let you know how far humanity has fallen, everyone's first reaction is to take out their stupid phone and record it as if they will ever watch it again and they totally miss the opportunity to immerse themselves into the experience.

Just goes to prove that opera isn't just for snobs. Reminded me of the scene in Shawshank Redemption when all the prisoners listened to opera from the record player. Music truly is the international language and breaks down barriers! ❤❤❤😃
