This pop-up opera production of Libiamo ne'lieti calici from Verdi's La Traviata presented by Festival Opera Association (www.festivalopera.com) on Dec 11, 2010 at the San Francisco Ferry Building was made possible by a generous donation from Pat and Berniece Patterson.

I was right in the middle of this. I'd always thought I hated opera, but this brought tears to my eyes, literally. It was so beautiful. Thanks! I want to go see opera now.

This was a great video to watch...I loved the man's reaction at the beginning after the "waiter" took his flute. His "What the hell?" was my reaction after the end of the opera. Thanks for posting this!

Did anyone notice the massive familiarity with opera among the random audience? Compared to dozens of other flash mob opera performances, this proves the education level, sophistication and interest among a younger audience, there in the Bay Area. You guys do America proud. It's not packed with clod kickers alone. Thanks for this performance and the kindness to share it via the WWW over distance and time. Thank you especially to the major donors who supplied funds that pulled the laboring oar.

Doing this kind public performance is so awesome! It exposes young kids who were there to be inspired and become future theatre performers. I envy this. Watching musicals and operas is really expensive in our country and not all public schools here can afford to bring school theater production or curriculum that’s why it’s an unknown thing for the general public here (like only for the rich etc).

It's drinking song. The tenor, Alfredo, has been in love with the soprano, Violetta, for a long time but at this party, for the first time he finds the courage to speak to her. When he's encouraged to sing a drinking song, he rises to the challenge, and eventually Violetta joins in. (The opera is based on Dumas' "The Lady of Camellias")

Every time I listen to opera I get kind of emotional, I start singing too even thought I can’t reach high notes, but it makes me feel happy, fulfilled, and I forget my problems for a little while. Bravissimo Giuseppe Verdi, forse tu non immagini quanto le tue opere sono apprezzate
