Aurora, Nevada
Precious metal deposits were found in nearby lower elevations in 1852, gold and silver deposits were first discovered in the Aurora area in August 1860. Within 2 months, prospectors had filed 350 claims. Aurora township was begun in 1861, and votes cast that year totaled 593.
In March 1861, the California State Legislature made Aurora the county seat of Mono County, while Territorial Governor Nye made it Council District 1 under his authority. Later that year, the Nevada Legislature created Esmeralda County with Aurora as the county seat. Because the boundary dispute was not resolved by the next general election in 1863, voters cast ballots at one polling place for California officials and at another for Nevada candidates. Settled by the boundary survey of 1864, Aurora was found to be three miles inside the Nevada border. Aurora remained under Territorial government until October 31, 1864, when Nevada became the 36th state. Esmeralda County was divided in 1911 by the Nevada Legislature and Aurora now lies within the area of Mineral County, created that year.

I’m from the Bishop area and I really enjoy watching videos of the area and I have to say this is the best video I’ve seen on Aurora. Thank you so much for everything you did to remember Aurora, Nevada.

For me, this is your best video thus far. Fantastic! Really, you did a thorough job of the townsite! I lived in both Bishop and Fallon (NV), and unfortunately, I never made it quite this far up the Lucky Boy Pass road, either from the east or the west. At some point, though, I hope you do a video on Lucky Boy. It's about 20 minutes south of Hawthorne on the road towards Mono Lake, (about 5 minutes south of Hawthorne you see a large white sign for the Aurora Mine--that is the road you take. It is a well maintained road. There is very little left of the town, but there are an exceptional amount of large mines in the area, that span for well over 2 miles). I was looking at the old pictures you were showing, and I am surprised there were no placer mines around Aurora. One would think with the small canyons there and some vigorous spring runoffs, combined with load gold and silver concentrated in the cluster of superficial ledges, there would be placer deposits in the draws. Maybe the problem, though, would be there was never a bedrock or caliche bed for the metals to settle on . . . ?? Anyway, a really fine video.

I came into Aurora through Luck Boy pass and saw all the things you speak of. I could not make it from Bodie to Aurora due to wash outs in the road from this rough winter and summer rain storms. So I was forced to take the Lucky Boy pass route. I plan to explore this area a little closer in the future. Thanks for the suggestion.

The different branches of the River you pass make some excellent fishing, also!

As always, GTW you take me with you on another adventure. So many old photos and maps along with your own photos and videos. Increíble. I love Esmeralda County. Especially Mineral Ridge with three wooden buildings with wood burning stoves in the 1980s. It seems that you are in pinion pine and juniper elevation in Aurora. Such a beautiful area that you explore. Can you tell us about the country rock that surrounds Aurora?

Aurora is about 7,400ft in elevation. I read a mining report that stated the ore-deposits are fissure veins of quartz. There were three principal locations of the mines, Last Chance Hill, Middle Hill and Silver Hill. I also read that the Last Chance Mine had a hard time keeping up with the de-watering process at a depth of 400ft.

Well done video. I always like the before and after images. I was there Labor Day 1972 and there actually was a few wooden buildings standing (not for long) at that time. I have photos of them including one you stated was the McKea (spelling?) house. Wish I had known about the cemetery at that time.

Thank you for this video! I really appreciated and enjoyed the history of Aurora. Hope you went up the hill and saw the cemetery. Really interesting. It's been many many years since I drove from Bodie to Aurora, but I still find that whole region fascinating.

Aurora was at 7,400 ft in elevation so really never too hot. It also never had running water in the town. All domestic and town water was hauled in or a few local wells provided some water. Water was stored in cisterns and never very much. They did not have a good fire apparatus to combat fires. I would imagine the fire in the winter was caused by some heating source used in the wooden structures.

I was there in the 80's. My wife and I came through the Nevada way. Between there and Bodie we discovered a cemetery on the right side of the road. Don't know if anyone knew it was there. We found it by accident. I had to go use the head. It was full of children. We assumed they had died of some disease and were given a special spot to lay away from the town. Don't know. Only know it was a sad place. More their when we went through.
