I doesn't matter if you are in the right or wrong, whether you think the truck driver should have seen you, in the interest of self preservation stay away from things that are bigger then you. And you cant take the right away, right away can only be given, and you will live longer and be happier.

I'd just like to add that when people see dashcam videos from trucks like this, the cameras are placed high in the windscreen, not at the level that the driver is actually looking out from. So dashcam clips often give the impression that the driver can see the car that is close to him when in actual fact, it's not always visible. Another thing that people don't realise is that cars can be hidden behind air intakes and mirrors. We've all seen videos of a truck pulling out from a side road directly in front of an oncoming car. More often than not, the car was hidden behind the mirror. I had a situation once when I looked left to right three times before pulling out and all three times, the oncoming car was behind my left mirror. It gave me just as much of a fright as the bloke in the car.

I generally don't get too close to trucks because of weight and ability to stop quickly, but also gives me another reason to be more cautious. Thanks for the tip. Always learning

It doesnt matter how black and white you explain this, ppl will never understand. Even cars have blindspots. Why do they make anything with a blindspot? I have said it for 50 years and will continue saying it. All new drivers MUST spend 1 day in a truck before they get a license. I know this would be a waste of time nowadays, as the mentality of these new age drivers is beyond scary and they dont have to do anything that they are told/taught. People will say, " Why didnt the truckie see the vehicle before they got to the blind spot?" Unfortunately, because they are so busy watching every inch around them, that while they are looking in 1 mirror, some1 is jumping in the other.

I do the same out of common respect and consideration. Reminds me of those who complain about a (large) truck going through a roundabout at a 'reasonable' distance and pace when they think the truckie' should be able to stop on a dime. These guys are carting stuff around the country for us and while some probably do take advantage at a roundabout I've seen too many videos wherein someones bitching about the truckie' and I think to myself... seriously? There's enough distance AND for him to stop/start is quite an effort compared to you having to slow down a little in your car to allow him to continue through. (no, I'm not a truckie/not affiliated with the industry).

If I'm going to pass a truck, I prepare myself to be "surprised" by a potential lane change by the truck. I make sure that I pass the truck as quickly and safely as I can and "get out of his way" asap. When (after passing said truck) coming back into his lane, I make absolutely sure that I am at least (minimum, and I mean MINIMUM) of 3 car lengths in front of that truck! If there are intersections coming up, I assess the chances of that truck TURNING! Seriously guys, don't mess with a truck or a bus!

Also, when i got my licence, nearly 40 years ago (well I was taught this) that when you are behind a truck on a highway keeping to the speed limit on any road that you should always stay far enough behind the truck so I can see his side mirrors so he can see me. I live in a country town less than 200 k's from Perth WA and travel quite a bit with my work, and I am behind a truck like I should be and there is impatient people behind me so they pass me and now if that truck has to put his brakes on all of a sudden I will have the opportunity to stop as i am far enough away but the car in fronts ends up in the back end of the truck because he did not leave himself enough space. People are so much more impatient and have to get where they are going asap. I laugh when they pass me, get caught behind a larger vehicle a little bit further down the road I catch up to him or even pass him. I am not perfect by any means, but please, people you do not need to speed and be aware of what is around you.

I agree! When I learned to drive, more like 50 years ago for me 😢, I learned about a truck's blind spots from my cousins. The Drivers Education Classes never covered it, unfortunately. More importantly, I also learned NEVER to take the "inside" lane next to vehicles bigger than me, especially semis, when there were two dedicated turn lanes. The semi will always be in the outside turn lane, but their trailer WILL go into the other lane as the rig turns. I mean, they put signs on the backs of these things that say, "CAUTION! Wide Turns!" or "This Vehicle Makes Wide Turns" for a good reason. If I am stuck in the inside lane, I stay back and let the semi do their thing. THEN, I go. And, yes, I've been beeped at AND cussed out more than a few times but, hey, my middle finger still works, and I let them know that they are still #🖕 in my book!

I try to be aware of where all traffic is around me, but the other blind spot or blind aspect I encounter in my pantech (light rigid - 7.5 Tonne GVM) is when a lane joins the road from an angle on the passenger side - say, an on ramp onto the freeway. I find it very hard to see when cars are coming in beside me in that circumstance, unless they land directly in the mirrors. My responsibility - but probably worth knowing that there can be a blind spot in that circumstance.

Every vehicle has a blind spot. Some are just bigger than others. If I'm passing a truck in another lane, I try to make sure I will get past it plus 1/2 truck length. That way the driver is going to be away that I'm now there and even if he does change lanes, he's not going to total me. I don't see the point of sitting next to a truck. I remember driving the bus and having people do stupid things. Seriously, ripping up the left side when I've got the left blinker on to turn is just asking for it. My favourite are the people who speed up from way back when you put on your blinker then sit next to your vehicle to stop you changing lanes.

Good Vid, but not all truckies have the blind spot mirror, or the passenger door well window... Just put it into your head, make yourself known to the awake truck driver, overtake and do it wide with plenty of indicator signals, and with two to three or more car space brake distances as much possible. The old rule was, "If you cannot see the drivers face, even in the mirror, he does not know you exist."

For the most part, you are right, but most truck drivers I see, not including myself always stick to the right-hand lane. That is why keeping left should be and I believe is mandatory for any slow vehicles. Keep left unless you want to turn right soon after, then Blind Spot is gone. Do not make an example of blind spot to your advantage when you should never change from right to left without taking extra due diligence. Cars are allowed the same space on the roads as trucks. All truck drivers should never be in the right lane because the roads are bumpy. Remember that bumpy roads are caused by Trucks and poor road management. Also, as a motorbike rider, we have to pay attention more than a car driver. So, the point is to know your limitations and do not abuse it as your excuse to polish someone off and get away with it.

It is true that there are a certain number of truck drivers who are either cowboys or just don't give a damn about other traffic on the road. I would say they are in the minority. And yes, if you are an alert truck driver you will be aware of all the traffic around you at all times and the chances of a car being in that particular blind spot and you never knowing about it, is pretty slim. However, only a bloody fool would believe that this blind spot issue is a rare thing and that all truckies are idiots. The majority do not want their trucks or bosses trucks smashed and they don't want lost time or worse still having to go home that day knowing they severely injured or killed someone. So, most truckies are good drivers and there are plenty of circumstances where a smaller vehicle can end up in that exact blind spot and the driver never know about it. What if the driver is distracted by an idiot in the righthand lane and doesn't see that the ute has moved up into the blind spot? The truckie might have thought the ute got off at the last off ramp. There are many scenarios. Moral of the story, one that is virtually never taught to car drivers, is to not dilly dally around large vehicles of any kind. Pass them and get away from them so you do not end up in a blind spot. If you can't pass them and get away, then don't pass in the first place. Simples!

There are a lot of videos where the truck changes lanes onto a vehicle they just cruised up to and overtook and all of the sudden it was a surprise they were there. Also there is a big difference between interstate trucks and the dirt f@#kers, I mean carters......

Make the elimination of that blind spot a mandatory design element…school buses have mirrors for that very purpose so it is not impossible. Then, four wheelers and bikers absolutely must always use the “mirror, signal, shoulder check and only then change lanes” routine…whether next to a truck or another small vehicle.

I always said they should teach “Driving near trucks” when people get driving lessons, sit for a test and have questions about it in the handbook. Another is people towing caravans, a hell of a lot of these people have never towed a thing in their life then they retire and travel around the country with a huge caravan behind them, they have no idea about breaking, reversing, turning etc, that too should be on a licence test.

Is it possible to add another mirror that hangs over, from top of the truck and it's bent on an angle above eye level to still see out so you can see the front corner of the truck?
@AussieD7902
@AussieD7902 Ай бұрын
Years ago I drove trucks and the company I worked for, mainly Cabover trucks. All of them had extra mirrors where you could easily see the lower front and lower corners. I don't know if, or how effective it would be on a conventional truck due to the nose length. Perhaps cameras could be a option. However, I believe it comes down to other motorists being more aware of their surroundings and knowing that cars and heavy vehicles don't have the same vision.

The only way truck drivers can see all around the truck is to install a camera system and monitor to view all areas of the truck which will help avoid some accidents however it will not help with inpatient drivers that push in because they have places to be I think trucks can stop on a dime which they can't as many people forget trucks stop the nation stops

The aholes who drive them like they are the only ones on the road are the ones I do not like. I have seen to many driving like they are the only ones on the road. I have been tailgated cut off and just squeezed out of their way. Most trucks have mirrors and if you cannot see them, they cannot see you. I get that, but when I look up and see myself in their mirror and they just come over anyway, F you because that happens a lot.

In reality, let us get out of both the car and truck and walk, take the time while walking to realize that humans also have blindspots without using any machinery. Next time you stop quickly or turn quickly in a shopping center and you walk into someone else, who was in your blindspot, next time you try to touch your toes and realize that you can't see them or the ground - blindspot, next time you are walking into somewhere with a lower opening and bump your head - blindspot, next time there is an election and you vote for ...... you get the gist, blindspots are everywhere for everyone and everything, on the roads a little thought and a little patience/tolerance can save a lot of despair further down the route

I get it there are certain areas around the truck that are dead spots or blind spot. But who does a vehicle get there? You must see it before it arrives there. In any case a truck driver merges on a car, insurance companies do not have clauses for blind spots - simple truckie at fault!
