If the service is good of course ill tip but forcing me to do so is wrong, and don't f start with " they are on minimum wage" so f*** what? Go outside and protest so people who work in this industry can get paid more, its not the costumers fault you get paid so low, blame your f boss.
@PBMS123

You should know, they are legally required to get the states minimum wage. They are often paid less, because the remainder is made up in tips. If they don't get get tipped, they must be paid by their boss to earn the minimum wage. So they only reason they get $3/hour, instead of minimum wage at ~$10-$12/hour is because people tip.

It should be a requirement for staff to have good customer service. They shouldn't get paid extra for what they are meant to do. It should be the bosses job to pay correct wages. Tipping creates a culture of lazy staff expecting extra money on top of their wage for doing a half-assed job.
@RuleofFive

Restaurants in the US don't even have to pay the federal minimum wage which is $7.25 per hour. So waiters and waitresses get paid less...like around $2.13 an hour. They depend on the tips to live. It's 15 - 20% for good service. These people in the service industry are not responsible for sh*t government policies they just suffer because of them.

I once had a burger in Tasmania that was $27.5 because of the 10% sunday surcharge. In the us some bars have specials were you can get a burger and a beer for $10 + tax and tip on a Monday. So considering some places charge $10 for a beer in oz the US is still way cheaper

Seems more ethical knowing old mate gets paid properly while the US $10 burger has all the hidden charges that you dont discover until you whip out your wallet - oh and then you gotta pay the employee because the employer was too lazy. $27.50 all the way. Mind you thats gotta be a good burger, most go for anywhere between $18-23 or at Grilled you can get them for like $12 all tax included in that listed price too!

If the boss can't pay his workers properly, to do their job adequately, why should I subsidise his shitty business???? Decent service is part of the dining experience!!! If the boss wants to pay peanuts, he's gonna get monkeys, and DESERVES to go broke when we all stop going to his establishment!! Yes, I HAVE waited on tables before, as a second job....and YES I HAVE respectfully declined tips (MUCH to the astonishment of the diners!!). My "boss" (who was actually one of my mates) was paying me to do a job -PROPERLY! If you need a tip to do what you are PAID for, then PISS OFF!! He paid me well, I worked well, customers dined well. Everybody happy! Simple. Shitty American custom they can bloody keep! Tipping is being pushed here in Australia, and it SHITS me!!! MANY other jobs also pay minimum wage, but THEY don't get tips for doing their job to standard!

Cross Post from Reddit: Funny thing is that I waited on Australians a few times (here in Northern California) and never did they tip but they did play stupid. Then I worked with a woman from New Zealand who never let the Aussies get a way with this crap. Don't forget that the waiter pays tax on your bill to the IRS, they take 8% of the check total and add it to the waiter's pay then tax on the adjusted amount. A $100 check will cost the waiter about $2.25 in income tax. I worked at a few restaurants with a mandatory 2% tip to the busser, a 1.5% to the host and a 1.5% to the bar based on check total and not on tips received. If the restaurant has a mandatory tip out to the bar, host and busser that is based on the check total and not on the tip received then the waiter will lose about $5. This brings the waiter's out of pocket loss to about $7.25 on a $100 check total. So when you stiff a waiter (in the USA) you are not only costing him the income he would've made if he had waited on a table that tips but you are also costing him money lost to the IRS to cover income taxes and costing him money paid to the other service staff's tip-out.

William Trader why don’t they just charge you more money? Like I’m not trying to be rude I just don’t understand. If I HAVE to pay it then it’s not a tip is it?
@wmtrader
@wmtrader 6 жыл бұрын
The restaurants that have stopped tipping and raised their prices to pay their wait staff higher wages ended up having to go back to tipping due to customers choosing restaurants with cheaper menu prices and tips. Restaurants that have tried adding the tip to the bill (gratuity) got to many complaints and feared losing customers, but it is still common at most restaurants when there are 5 or more people at a table. Every, if not most, restaurants, in a given area, would need to switch to "no tips and higher prices" at the same time for it to work. The only way we would see higher wages and no tipping or see the tip (gratuity) written into the bill is if the government required all restaurants to do this at the same time. Wage laws are set by individual States so you'd need to get all 50 States to enact these laws at once. If one State tried to enact something like this the State lobbyist for hotels, conventions and other business/tourist travel industries would put up a fight saying that it will drive business to States that have lower menu prices because the tip is not included in the price. The Federal (national) government could do this, maybe the IRS requiring all tips to be included on the bill (gratuity), but the lobbyist would block it.
@dm7626
@dm7626 6 жыл бұрын
William Trader that’s really weird. Like everywhere I’ve ever lived you only tip if you feel that the person deserves one, like it’s a nice gesture that shows gratitude- people often do it in nicer restaurants only. It’s sad America doesn’t pay people enough. America kind of confuses me. Another question, (it might be super stupid, sorry) is there a lowest wage you can pay a person?
@dm7626
@dm7626 6 жыл бұрын
Owain Harris I guess but also it would be nice if Americans could get paid decently for their job. Where I currently live - in the U.K. - you often pay tips, it’s like an overly polite social thing people do unless they absolutely hated the service. I think people do a better job when they don’t hate their job and paying better would be a thing that would make them like the job. Tips are too flimsy to depend on imo.
