The Federal Aviation Administration and the US National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation into an aborted landing at Austin in which a FedEx plane almost collided with a Southwest Airlines plane while attempting to land. The close call occurred at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and could have ended in disaster were it not for the quick thinking of FedEx pilots.

Very often. People screw up all the time
@GrainneDhu
@GrainneDhu Жыл бұрын
The reason it makes national news is that it really doesn't happen very often. Yes, there have been 3 incidents in a few days but overall, it's very, very rare. Keep in mind that if there is a 1 in a 1 million chance of something happening, the one time something happens won't be exactly 1 million times after the last incident. It could happen within 10 times and then not happen for 2 million more times. Think of flipping an unbiased coin. Over 1000 flips, close to 500 will be heads and close to 500 will be tails. But if you actually take the time to record the flips, you'll see runs of 10, 20, even 50 all heads or all tails in a row. They tend to cluster but the overall will be very, very close to 50/50. This is a familiar exercise math professors use to demonstrate randomness: they assign the class into 2 groups. One group has a coin and flips it X number of times (usually 100 but some professors take it up to 250 or 500) and records the results on a board. The other group makes up a set of fake results for the same number of flips. Without knowing which group did the actual flips vs the faked results, the professor can come in, look at both boards and usually tell instantly which group was faked. The faked group always looks fake because their runs are never as long as real results. The faked results are always too random to be real. The same thing is happening here. Three incidents within a short span of days, then there won't be any more incidents for a long time. Or there could be another incident tomorrow--that's the nature of probability.

FedEx got close enough to see Southwest and told them to abort, but Southwest was going too fast and didn't have enough runway left. FedEx then gave it all they had to get above the Southwest while Southwest kept the climb shallow to give FedEx space. Both crews did an excellent job. The controller needs a verbal lashing and some serious retraining.

@TylerGutwein

@@21AirDrop Listening to the chat between the two planes and ATC with a live(ish) gps tracker of flight positioning, Southwest gets the Abort call, then immediately FedEx called the go around. Then ATC sends another message to Southwest as they are taking off (likely because they reached or were too close to V1 to safely stop) which Southwest replies with a "negative". Partially for the delay in telling FedEx is they are busy with takeoff procedures and trying to make a split second decision on if they can safely abort or not.
@nw6gmp
@nw6gmp Жыл бұрын
@@TylerGutwein right, that "negative" was probably to warn the FX pilots what the situation was (V1). It is most likely, the WN pilot didn't say "negative" as a negative (no pun intended) interaction, but just exactly what the FX pilot needed to remove any speculation WN was not going to stop.

Bad reporting! The FEDEX aircraft was doing a CAT III approach, because of extremely low visibility. The tower cleared the 737 onto the same runway which violated the ILS critical area. This contaminates the electronic information received by the FEDEX planes coupled auto pilot approach. Thank goodness the FEDEX pilot knew enough to go around even though he couldn’t see the 737.

As a professional pilot, I have often been cleared for takeoff, esp at busy airports, with approaching traffic at 3 miles or less.
@billyb4613
@billyb4613 Жыл бұрын
The issue here is this occurred in IMC. The controller applied an incorrect separation procedure. 3 mile separation is required to be established and maintained in this case. If FedEx was already on a 3 mile final when SWA was cleared, there's no way that would have happened (and clearly it didn't). The only exception to this I'm aware of is if the control tower has an ASDE-X or ASSC system, of which AUS does not have. You've likely been issued takeoff clearances with traffic 3 miles or less in good visibility, in which case the separation standard (for most large aircraft) requires the departing aircraft to be 6000 feet down the runway and airborne before the arrival crosses the landing threshold.

It was the FedEx crew who told SW to abort. SW was too far into the roll to abort, that aircraft pulled right while the FEX climbed and pulled left, initiating a go around “on the go” thus avoiding contact.
@nw6gmp
@nw6gmp Жыл бұрын
I agree it was FX that told WN to abort. This also shows the WN pilot knew the approach plate for 18L -- since a left turn (FX) is the procedure for a go around, the WN pilot knew he had to pull right. 👍

The RVR at touchdown was 1200, FedEx on 3 mile final, the controller clears SWA for takeoff holding short of the runway. You can’t see the runway, there’s no visual separation, this is an egregious error in judgement by the controller. The controller should be decertified!

It’s Possible that the runway incursion system can send warnings to both air traffic control and pilots. That way pilot can make a go around ( when they notice that although they’re cleared to land , there’s likely to be an incursion)before it’s becomes a close call
