In this video I discuss our vinyl record road trip down south to the Austin Record Convention 2021! See the vinyl and CDs I picked up from the Austin Record Convention as well as a few stores in Texas and Oklahoma City. If you attended this record convention, what were your thoughts?
I was able to add plenty of vinyl records to the collection, including titles from the Buzzcocks, Joe Jackson, Adam and the Ants, PiL, Devo, Guided by Voices, and more! Don't miss out, check out our road trip adventure!
Record Stores mentioned:
Spin Connection in Waco
Waterloo Records in Austin
Guestroom Records in OKC
You can also check out my other southern road trip video where I discuss some of the stores mentioned in further detail here: • Vinyl Record Store Roa...

Always a fun and informative video. I always see something that is new to me. I had not heard you mention Eno before. The four albums he made on Island, " Here Come The Warm Jets, " Another Green World" Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy" and Before and After Science" are all essential ,especially with some of Phil Manzanera's best guitar work. Glad you have that Jeopardy lp. Love anything related to Howard Devoto, have not run across a video where you mention "Magazine" their first two albums, are Essential. Thanks for sharing your love of vinyl, Hanna

@@TheOmahaIntrovert I'm guessing that you are too young to have experienced this but I think it was 1979 or so, The Shoes had a 30 minute episode, program or commercial I don't really know what it was called but it was on HBO and it was part of the paid HBO programming that you would see back when they did a monthly viewing guide that you received in the mail with your bill. It consisted of the videos for some of the songs on 'Present Tense' that would eventually be played on MTV two years later in 1981. That was how I was turned on to them. I must have watched that HBO show 15 times.

All looks pretty manageable, people wise. On to the records - I'd love to find that first Primals album. Shame on that Eno press. Good Deal on that PIL Plastic box. I do need to check out the sound (still haven't played a live album I picked up of theirs!). Very cool of Jess in Waco, and also grabbing Biff Bang Pow! And the Fall one is sweet to see, haven't come across that. So many more I am missing commenting on but man that is a huge score on the sealed 100% Fun, and what a price! Thanks for sharing. So many great purchases and introducing me to music from the era I lived through. Superb. Squeezing Out Sparks is the Graham Parker I return to the most. Discovering Japan & Protection should have you hooked. Second Edition/Metal Box - One of the all-time greats. Poptones alone would make it a must-get. Excited to see you expanding your Fall collection. Their catalog is expensive and wildly varied but you can't go wrong with anything from the 80s. Brix is pronounced with a hard X. Named herself after The Clash song Guns Of Brixton. From somebody who lives there, I will concur driving through Dallas sucks. But there are some record stores worth checking out. I am sure you would find some hidden gems.

Hi Richard! Good to hear from you again and happy Friday! Oh, the guitars on "Poptones" are glorious! I just ordered an album from the Fall on CD with bonus tracks. I'll show it in a later vinyl finds video. Thanks for helping me out with the Brix pronunciation! After going through Dallas twice in a year, that was too much for me. Hehe. I've always wanted to go to Josey but it was always inconvenient from where we were. In some cases it can take an hour to get somewhere in Dallas, as you know! Forever Young was a cool one when I visited last time but I found it way overpriced and didn't end up getting anything. Cheers!

Hi Hanna You have certainly crossed some records off your want list. So pleased you now have some Sound LP's, I can recommend everything they did. Any Trouble were a great band and Clive Gregson is so underrated. Love those Joe Jackson LP's. Alan McGee named Creation after the 1960's band of the same name. They came from the same area as me. They are like The Who and Biff Bam Pow was the name one of their singles. Don't know that Off Broadway, its gone on my list. The Members are a great band they produced a punk classic with Sound of the Suburbs. I really like Guided By Voices and they and Robert Pollard are so prolific. Also thank you for recommending The Records, I picked their LP Crashes today and also a Devo, Duty Now for the Future, a load of Raspberries singles and a number of Japan singles with fine picture sleeves at our local bi-weekly record fair. I would say it was well worth you going to Austin. It looked a well run and very safe environment. Take care. Gary
@TheOmahaIntrovert
@TheOmahaIntrovert 3 жыл бұрын
Greetings, Gary! Clive Gregson definitely seems underrated! I guess he keeps putting out music, too. Yes, I love Creation from the 60s and in fact I have a few of theirs on vinyl...reissues, of course. One is a compilation. Very cool that McGee decided to name his band after one of their singles indeed! I hope you dig Off Broadway. Definitely a band worth checking out. It's hard to keep up with GBV. So much material! Ah, I'm thrilled you were able to pick up Crashes from the Records. That's such a great followup LP! You really picked up some gems at that record fair, I'd say! Yay on the Japan singles! We felt very safe at the record convention and we were both vaccinated. :-) Always great to hear from you! Peace.

Weird about the Warm Jets reissue. The Sound?!? Yipes! Great stuff! Your Killing Joke discoveries will be abundantly rewarded! Same for Boomtown Rats! Ooooh! Dirk Wears White Socks! Major find there! Forgot the name of the group,but I seem to remember Marco Pirroni's band from early 2000s covering"Needle In The Camel's Eye" by Eno. Also look for Eno's BBC Sessions. Sorta garagey versions of Tiger Mountain and Warm Jets Stuff plus covers of The Lion Sleeps Tonight and Fever. Essential. Great finds as usual,Hanna. Thanks so much for taking some footage around the convention and it was great to see the photos at the end. I am glad they enforced a mask wearing policy and Austin is probably one of the few places in the state they would really do that. So it was really funny watching the video because at 3:43 there appears a guy in a green shirt. This is the guy that also operates as a dealer and hits the Houston show. He also had his own KZfaq channel for a while. As with all your videos, 70% or more of what you show are bands I am not aware of. I am really curious about 'The Sound.' I will have to check out that one. I should probably sample Boomtown Rats a bit more. I only know them for I Don't Like Mondays. Adam Ant is another one that I took for granted and I only know him from Goody Two Shoes since it played on MTV all of the time. So glad you scored an original of 100% Fun. Hey Paul! Thanks for taking the time to watch. Austin felt very safe to us out of everywhere we stopped while in Texas. Very cool that you recognized a dealer! Haha! Impeccable taste ! The Sound, Killing Joke, Adam and the Ants, Eno, PIL... great picks everywhere. I hope you enjoy Japan's Obscure Alternatives. I know some fans prefer Adolescent Sex, but for me OA is a more focused record, it has a more after punk approach, which works better for me, and you can already feel Sylvian starting to really take over the band.

Thanks for showing the Austin show. I've never been, but always heard about it. I'm surprised they still had it with the Covid thing, though I don't think Texas was hit as hard as other places. Not only would the convention be cool, but Austin is so dang cool too, nice laid back vibes and good places to eat. I'd never heard of Off Broadway and some of the others. I always thought The Sounded a bit like Echo & The Bunnymen. Those Joej Jackson lps are great. I don't listen to much punk, but Jackson stuff still resonates with me. Hope you enjoyed the trip.

"Guitar Beat" by The Raybeats was constantly on my turntable in 1981, I have the original one with the circles on the cover not the green suits one, I think that came out later. Saw them so many times here in New York City, they were also a great live band. That Howard Devoto album that you acquired is a big favorite. The promo man from the record label sent me that and I loved it. "Rainy Season" is such an outstanding track. Glad you enjoyed yourself. I went to a record show in Long Island that was usually a pretty good show, first one they had since the pandemic, I went for the early admission which was probably a waste. Very disappointed, a lot fewer vendors and not many that were there had much good stuff. I spent under $75 at this show, because there wasn't much, tables were spread apart. A lot of the better usual vendors were not there, unfortunately. I love P/I/L, my 2 favorite albums by them are Metal Box a/k/a Second Edition and Flowers Of Romance. I also love First Issue. I know you'll love them. Stay well my beloved friend. Look forward to hearing more from you. I used to play that Byrds CD a lot, it has the original version of that song The Turtles later covered and had a hit with. "You Showed Me."

Maybe once more people get on board with vaccinations? Hoping to dig into that Devoto solo LP this week. No doubt I'll love it! So cool that you are also a PiL fan! Kudos! I'm really connecting with their sound more and more. And yes, apparently this Byrds CD version has 3 tracks not included on the vinyl version! Fantastic stuff! Hi JT! Very cool to hear you reminiscing about when you bought some Jam/Style Council LPs! There are a few Style Council LPs that are hard to track down. I'm more of a fan of Paul with the Jam, though. The vinyl craze is still in full force, so who knows when prices may be more reasonable. Probably not anytime soon...especially with prices on everything else rising. Sigh.

Thanks for a great video. You must get the Stranglers first album "Rattus Norvegicus" which was mainly written and recorded at the same time as "No More Heroes". Their fourth album "Black and White" is also well worth a listen. Another slight change in direction, with Dave Greenfield's (Doors' style) keyboard swirls very prevalent. Sadly we lost Dave to Covid last year. Keep up the great work. Keith xxx

Great finds! Shanachie Records released a bunch of dub and roots reggae albums in the 80s/90s. Really good stuff. A few weeks ago out here in the SF Bay Area we had our first "record swap" in Oakland. It was cool. I found an old roots reggae record and a couple watermelons. 😄 If you ever make it out to Northern California/SF Bay Area check out 1234 Go! Records in Oakland (they're a shop and label), Streetlight Records and Needle to the Groove. There is another place called The Record Man. But they recently had a fire. Hopefully they are ok. I will check it out next week. But all these spots have great selections

Hi Nahui! Thanks for letting me know a little more about Shanachie Records! Very cool that you attended a record swap in Oakland. I lived in Modesto, CA for a year back in 2006. I wasn't collecting vinyl then but I went to plenty of music stores in the Bay Area as I was buying lots of used CDs. Amoeba, Rasputin, and J Street Records in Sacramento are the ones I remember most. Of course I think J Street may have closed since. I doubt I'll be making it to California again anytime soon but great place to buy music! Cheers!

Saw Sex Pistols at Bumbershoots. No talk of swindle from Lydon this time around. Musically they were good and handled the arena well. Matlock on bass. Life after crash and burn. Placebo has my attention presently. I like 90s stuff. Much thanks for sharing the trip.

I dig the 90s, too as I did a lot of my growing up in that decade. I guess I don't feature the 90s too much on my channel unless it's power pop from that decade. I also attended the Record Con and found a lot to see that amazed me. I only bought three records but one was a doozy, a late '60's original Ornette Coleman Blue Note - flawless vinyl and only $15! [There were probably fewer vendors due to the fact that there would be no out of country buyers who usually spend quite a bit.] I passed on an original Daughters of Albion, which is one of my favorite all-time albums but couldn't quite stomach paying $45 for it.

Good stuff. I'm so glad you got a hold of Killing Joke's and The Sound's debut albums. These were my grails for a long time and I snagged them both in 2011. When I got my hands on them, I felt like I had just bought a pair of Prada shoes and a Chanel bag. Those records are probably more precious than the shoes and bag to me. 😀 'Post Punk Brilliance' is an understatement. I love that you mentioned Complications from the KJ album. What an amazing song. Should've been a single. Whenever you're out in the wild, record hunting, look for their single Change with Requiem as the A-Side, as well as Nervous System, which I think was only released as a single. You'll love them both! Take care and thanks for sharing.

In fact, I do most of my clothes shopping at Goodwill now because my vinyl habit has gone out of control LOLOLOLOL! I hope to see more videos from you. I subbed and really love that you showed that Gang of Four box set...AMAZING! So cool that you scored these Killing Joke/The Sound albums back in 2011! Some of these just get harder to find. It usually takes a record show for me to find some really good stuff, so I'm thankful that I was able to attend this one! Oh yes, Complications for the win on the KJ debut! @@TheOmahaIntrovert LOL! Necessities last...music first should be on a T-shirt. Thanks for the sub and for watching the Gang of Four unboxing video. I didn't realize until after I had filmed that I had my earphones I use for work plugged into my laptop, causing the volume of the video to be low. Since it was an unboxing video, it didn't make sense to redo it, so I hope you could hear some of it-lol. It's a great boxset, but pricey, as most boxsets tend to be. I agree about the inability to track down certain albums and how increasingly hard it's become over recent years. Punk/Post Punk/New Wave and even Golden Age Hip Hop records are so scarce and command a lot of money. Record shows and online are the best places to find them, because most record stores rarely even get them in stock. I'm glad you and the boyfriend had a great time in Texas. As always, keep these awesome videos about great music and bands coming. Take care & be safe.

Box sets have been a thorn for me because of the cost. I'd love to pick up that Gang of Four and there was a recent Go-Betweens box set as well as Beat Happening. All over my budget, hehe. @@TheOmahaIntrovert We don't need to save, we just need more money. 🤑 people can buy yachts and Lamborghinis without blinking and still be able to take care of their priorities, and here we are pinching pennies to buy one of the most simplest pleasures in life... music. That stinks, but such is life. I bought the GOF boxset as birthday gift to myself. I don't regret it, but I most certainly had to talk myself into buying it.
