I like that you mention how they're not "competing" when they sing together. One of the things I love about Home Free is that there really doesn't seem to be anyone who is a bigger fan of any given member of the band than the other members of of the band. Their mutual admiration and respect for one another is so lovely.

Yes Rob is opera trained. He was headed to become an opera singer and then changed paths. I don’t remember why. This is his father’s favorite song. Austin had to spend a lot of time convincing him to do this. Rob was a bit scared to do it since he hasn’t done opera in a long time and Austin wanted to show off his (Rob’s) skill. Austin loves the song too. One of the things I think makes Home Free great is that they are always encouraging each other. They have no egos over who should sing lead in any song (in fact they often take turns singing the song to see who fits best where) and support each other in trying things differently all the time. We could all use friends like that.

Yes, we saw how the rest of the group encouraged Austin to start developing a solo career, even when he wasn't sure he was good enough, how Tim nagged him to record When a Man Loves a Woman for several years. There is a special bond between Rob and Austin, dating back 10 years to when they first met.

I watched a Q&A session with Home Free a few years ago where someone asked who they felt was their best singer, and everyone but Rob said Rob. He's not got the broadest vocal range, the highest note, or the lowest note, but he has such a range of styles that he takes on effortlessly. Listen to this, then Man of Constant Sorrow, then Blue Ain't Your Color, then End of the Road, then What Christmas Means to Me, then the Butts Remix/Medley and be blown away by this man's facility at switching genres. He's massively talented, but so sweet with absolutely no ego.

Hat a brilliant, intuitive review. I respect that Austin never completely looses his country, southern twang. He's quite received as he is, but Nessum Dorma really reveals his flexible and high voice. As for Rob, there's nothing more to say: he reveals training that few ever experience.

Where exactly was the twang? I keep asking people who refer to it and never get an answer. I can't hear it, Italian reactors can't hear it. (Btw I think you meant "loses"). As for "never" singing without an accent, I'd refer you to a song called Your Bed, Austin's version of a demo he was sent, which is in a rather Broadway style. He sings it in that style, with a completely neutral accent. What did you think he was doing on a course designed to produce top rate musical theatre performers? He's spoken of being trained to get the Georgia out of his voice.

This has always been my favorite tenor aria, I was so pleased with these gentlemen, and yes , clearly Rob is trained, he’s been holding out on us, secretly I think Austin talked him into this so the world could hear the other side of Rob’s voice, Austin looks so proud of Rob, they are precious ❤

Hi William, yes, both of them can sing.😄😂😇 These are trained voices that complement each other wonderfully in terms of pitch. I suspect that if only one of them had sung it wouldn't have sounded so great - although each voice is exceptionally good on its own. But together they are even better. I allow myself to recommend an artist to you - AURORA. AURORA (Aurora Aksnes) was born on June 15, 1996 in Stavanger, Norway. She is a singer, songwriter and producer with a style all her own. AURORA's songs always have a strong message. Often the messages are not very clear either. They can be interpreted so that many people can relate them to themselves. Her movements when singing are extraordinary. This isn't a dance. This is her special way of expression. You can also say that she sings with her whole body. Her excellent music, her brilliant voice and her movements. AURORA's live performances are a total work of art. She is often so into the song that she shakes her body or head uncontrollably (--> Murder song, It happened quiet) and need 2-3 seconds to come back. AURORA once said: People tend to believe quite quickly that something is wrong with them if they're not like the people they see in front of them. It's so sad that it doesn't take much for us to really doubt ourselves ------------------------------------ - It Happened Quiet (Live at The Current) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7tdgZl91uDIeYE.html - it's about the rape of a woman - some say - these great harmonies --> One opera singer has responded to "It Happened Quiet" by saying that the harmonies remind her of Lakme's "Flower duet". And that something like that would be very rare to find in today's music. ------------------------------------ - Through The Eyes Of a Child (Live at Nidarosdomen) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pMl3bN2F39nNo3k.html - she sang in norway's biggest cathedral - phenomenal acoustics - Murder song (5,4,3,2,1) - The 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rM5ghrqFu928qKs.html - the saddest love song I've ever heard Three important bits of information I found from another commenter: 1. -- In a recent interview she said "well, the last song I wrote is meant for my 7th album.” - AURORA's latest album, the fourth, was released on January 21, 2022. She's already in the planning for the 7th. 2. -- AURORA was a teen when she answered the question "are some of your songs related (on different albums)?" - it will all make sense when I have finished. - AURORA has a plan and we don't know the destination yet. But it is important to know that everything belongs together. 3. AURORA is holding back one song from every decade of her life to release those songs as the last album after her death. Which artist does that? I hope that I was able to arouse your curiosity. Have a nice day and Greetings from Germany

I was interested that you said that Austin's voice was worth a lot! I think he'd like some pointers on that! Money is of course a constant worry for independent artists and the industry seems to be trying to starve them out. Touring used to be the answer, now that''s getting more expensive. Home Free have said that they are cutting back their touring schedule quite dramatically, because they can't afford to do shows in small venues any more, and they are all in a stage of life where they want time with their kids and SOs. I have thought for some time that Austin should find some way of getting back to musical theatre, where his beautiful voice might be heard, but he may have left it too late. We'll see how he and his bandmates deal with the extra time to themselves. You might be interested to hear Austin's versions of demos sent to him by a slightly reclusive figure known only as ResurrecSis Music, in arrangements by his constant colleague Sebastien Douyon. The first I heard, called Empty House, is a stunning hard blues expressing great grief, and I think it's Austin's best work to date. He doesn't just kill it, but buries it too. Another called Your Bed is very Broadway ballad in style and he hits exactly the right tone and style.
@BangkokVoiceCoach

Hello! I found your comment very interesting! I checked out ResurrecSis and Austin’s beautiful vocals. Touring is so expensive, with hotels, flights, theatre hire, publicity & PR, taxes, promotors’ cuts, there can be surprisingly little left to divide between five! I was in a singing trio that toured the US & Canada and it was a constant battle to cover costs. I left the group and made my money in the world of corporate & wedding entertainment. It may not be everyone’s dream but at least I got a largish nest egg with which I could move to Thailand. One thing for Austin: it’s hard to make big money when you are singing other people’s songs because they get most of the royalties. If he could combine his astonishing vocal talent with some self-penned hit ballads, he could become wealthy. As Don McLean once said when asked what does American Pie mean. “It means I’ll never have to work again.” Boom! 🙄🎶🙏

PTX Silent Night kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdOVa7Fj1eC2qGw.html Avi was their bass for 6 years and he is the soloist in this song. Avi is a classically trained basso Profundo with quite the wide range. PTX won the A Capella singoff two years before Home Free.

New subscriber here. I have always loved to sing, especially harmony. I just hear it in my head when listening to a song and then try to pick it up. I have zero training nor any musical background at all. I'm fascinated by the observations of people who are singers themselves and train others. I've learned so much about the sounds I make and how I make them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Nice to hear your review. Popular singers can often have come from a classical or opera background. Rob Lundquist had formal operatic training and sounds gorgeous in this. Austin Brown was more focused on musical theater in university but can handle this quite beautifully. Austin is the high tenor in Homefree, Rob is the tenor. If you didn't know Homefree did not focus on country music until the Sing-Off competition when they were asked to focus on it for the show. Avi Kaplan is another popular singer who was with the American acapella band Pentatonix and now is a singer-songwriter in folk rock but was one of the rare basso profundos training in opera and choral studies in college when the Pentatonix opportunity came up.

If you look at a translation of the lyrics, you'll see that in Rob's first part the prince is dreaming about the sociopathic princess he hopes to win. In Austin's first part the prince stops dreaming and expresses his determination only to divulge his identity when he kisses the girl. So that part can't be dreamy and emotional.
