This Video fixed my van for £160!! I had slips from 3rd to second (wouldn't go higher) and plumes of smoke out of the exhaust Diaphragm had indeed failed and sucked all the ATF into the manifold. New filter, seal and oil kit plus new valve, sorted! Thanks a bunch!

it's usually a broken retainer for reverse piston due to catastrophic worn out of friction disks... and when you pull pump - you see the whole mess of springs and bits and pieces. So this 722.3 seem to be disassembled perfectly in right time to prevent this from happening.

Thanks for the update, I had the same issue several years ago on my S124 280 and drove 400 km on the Autobahn, after that the clutches are gone…..

Did it leak ATF or everything went directly to the intake manifold? (as you might see, I barely understand that diaphragm’s operation).

Trans had no external leaks, it had the ATF all sucked into the intake manifold via the perforated vacuum diaphragm. The purpose of this diaphragm is to alter shift firmness based on engine load. The throttle pressure cable is what alters shift points based on throttle position.

i’ve got one. I’ve not fit it yet. It’s something i want to try in red’s transmission along with permanent first gear start mod. Red has very brutal acceleration in 1st too so should be a lot of fun.

Just follow the manual. The ATSG one is available online, or was.

What's a rebuild on this tranny worth in AUD? Also, what would a fluid change, new filter and modulator service cost? I'm thinking of doing that on one I bought recently just for the sake of it. I'm in Sydney.

if you’re doing it all yourself you’re only up for the parts cost which would be under a grand. Paying a shop to rebuild one youd be looking anywhere from 4 to 7 grand. can’t remember exact prices of parts vacuum modulator itself a couple hundred and filter kit about 50 from memory. The car in this video ended up going to the crusher, a S500L ended up turning up in just as poor condition and needing similar attention so it took its place. It has the much better 722.6 5 speed auto (1996 on)

Talking about 722.3 transmission, maybe someone can help - my friend has got a W140 with V12. When car under operating temperature, the kickdown works and car gives you the first gear. When car has warmed up, no matter what you do (kickdown or put it manually into 1st gear) there is no 1st gear. It will start only from 2nd gear. Has been to a few mechanics, no one can find the fault.

MAYBE transmission is 100% fine, and everything it needs - a slight TV cable tensioning. I've had a 722.433 problem with 1st gear, and full valvebody rebuild solved it. I cant even say what was wrong - just touched every valve, checked everything is moving smoothly, no dust, no garbage, no nothing....assembled it and it goes from 1st gear okay for now. But 722.3 in v12 vehicles uses a default 2nd gear take off...soo.....
