We were all looking forward to the Hunter Valley Great Train race this year when the Garratt was to go up against the newly restored 3801( after a very LONG time), unfortunately now cancelled.

@@video_mitch I live in the Newcastle area and was really looking forward to that but in a race between a 38 and a 60 over mainly flat ground, no prizes for guessing the winner. That said, the 60 is my fave loco of all time and I had a cab ride in this one back in 1980 or '81.

Glad you enjoyed! Very interesting point about 6029 being to clean, I had never thought about it that way. All preserved locos are cleaned to a very high shine now. We are very lucky to have so many locos preserved in operating order in NSW. Even 3801 is back and running, but unfortunately due to Covid, has not been able to haul a public train. This is slowly changing, with a few trips operating at the NSW Rail Museum & charters this coming weekend to Kiams (expensive, limited passengers)

@@video_mitch NSW is indeed fortunate to have so many beautiful steam locomotives (do they still run the Lithgow switchback?). Rarely seen these in action days up here in Canada, although they have a great railway museum near Montreal. I wonder if anyone is making similar efforts in NSW to restore and promote steam ships? A triple expansion steam engine viewed from a void above like older Sydney ferries is also a sight to behold. Both are history in motion, not well understood by a handheld device generation but not likely to be forgotten once experienced directly. Thanks again for a great video.

Actually, W.A. tried them too with disasterous results. They put them on narrow gauge and then they couldn't handle the curves, resulting in the first and longest strike of engine drivers in the state refusing to drive them.

I live here and theres only 2 fixed Garratts, 6040 and 6029, 6040 is a static display in Thirlmere while 6029 is in Canberra and gets steamed up for special events

i am angry cause the Denver and rio grande western never used any and since most of their 3 foot gauge track had curves gentle enough for 2-8-2 mikados it should be albe to handle a garratt no problem

Yes, it s really 2 steam locomotives fed off the one large boiler. It allows for a much more powerful engine operating on light rail lines.The front extension is a water tender.

I've read that H.W Garratt got the idea from rail guns. I've also read he got the idea from seeing a bogie well-wagon carrying a boiler being shunted in a yard somewhere. No idea which is true but if it's the latter, it wouldn't have taken too much imagination to turn that wagon into his locomotive.

I know you realize this, but while steam can be as powerful as a diesel, it is vastly more maintenance intensive, requiring many, many more maintenance hours for every operational hour. Steam looks and sounds great; their design by Class is always interesting and often beautiful, but Steam just costs too much today for any viable freight or passenger service anywhere in the world. This one's a beauty, though.

I mean IMO a lot of high speed rail looks amazing, the original Shinkansen is probably the most beautiful piece of design from the latter half of the 20th century. And the truly cutting edge stuff from China and Japan looks amazing. They don't really make any sound but in a way no sound is the best sound, it obviously is if you're anyone that has to hear it often. I also like a lot of modern DMUs and I know that they aren't popular but I do think they're comparable to something like a Garratt, like you can hardly call a Garratt pretty but it's functional and rugged and that has a certain charm and I think modern passenger DMUs do the same.

I think they were also very popular in South Africa. Australia also had a version to work on narrow (3ft 6in) gauge.

@@video_mitch a shame if if G42 is to be temporarily retired but lots of cost pressured currently. They also run their South African Garratt so may have that in reserve if needed.

Hi Chris, the loco was supplied to the New South Wales Government - it is a standard gauge loco. The Garratts in South Australia were narrow gauge (3ft 6in). My understanding was the the tractive effort is just under 60,000lb.

They are trotted out for special occasions, last official steam revenue service would have been by 1970 on most systems. The Queensland system was all diesel by the end of 1969.

WOW! Firstly how amazing for your wife to compete at the Olympics. I live very close to Olympic Park - It's a very different place now with a lot of residential apartments being built. I have not been able to find any details of which steam locomotive would have been used on your trip as yet. Most likely it is still running, as there has been some restorations going on in the last few years to allow the preserved locos to continue to run on then main line.

No ifs not! It's a beautiful Bayer Garratt articulated loco used for heavy haul freight on lines with hefty gradients and sharper than normal curves. It's nice to see some still in existence. Welsh Highland Railway has 3 all be it on 2' guage

They do this all the time in England, there are so many videos on youtube of British steam excursions.

When you're in the UK, have you checked what's going on on the Continent? It seems once or twice a year there's some parallel running in Germany. Especially in the Eastern part - around Berlin - you might be lucky.

I was a passenger on a train pulled by that Garrett to Toowoomba some years ago a great trip, shame governments have no sentimentality, maybe we should treat retired pollies the same, dump them in a shed and forget about them.

Due to the dog's breakfast of gauges in Australia (thanks NSW) there aren't many lines the narrow and broad gauge locos can run on.

Yes i did a lot of shed bashing back then.The Hymeks were a good popular loco but when BR decided they were going to have diesel electrics only they had to go .They were building the class 17 Clayton's at the same time they were a complete cock up cheers Steve ..
