The Gladiators have got a bit of an advantage in these games, because while the challengers need to compete in whatever game comes up, the Gladiators are picked out for whoever can do them best. For instance, you see Tower and Vulcan many times on Duel, but never on Hand Tough!

The revival addresses this one a little bit with the gladiators varying it up in different events. For instance, Thunder (think Wolf from the UK version and built like a tank) frequently spread himself out along a number of events. Scar and Viper (male/female) same deal-they competed in a number of different events. A couple were for weight-related reasons (ie thunder never did Hang Tough because he's HUGE!), while the others may have been for health reasons.

+OneHundredPercentAus Similarly on the original American Gladiators, Tower (same name, different guy) never played SkyTrack for that very same reason - he was too big for the harness! They even mentioned that in a downtime profile segment.
