Before setting out on our Australian adventure we decided its best to give our Land Rover Defender a full service and perform other routine maintenance.
We take you through the entire process of servicing our Defender along with sharing a few handy hints.
We also install a new winch to replace our old winch that had recently failed.
After that its time for a shake down trip. We head to an area south of Perth city called Tims Thickett and hit the tracks and beach.
We took Leighs parents along for the adventure and a beach barbecue. Things didn't quite go to plan...
If you would like to support the work we do in creating these videos please consider joining our Patreon team by following the link below or at the end of the video.
We'd be so grateful for the support. Your generosity helps ensure that the content we hope you enjoy can continue.

Thank you so much, Stephy and Leigh
Join us as we travel the world overland, exploring the cultures and traditions of all the countries we visit.
In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.

Great stuff team, a tip if it has not been mentioned, always lube the oring with what ever fluid is in the filter, stops it becoming brittle and seals better. Dry orings "can" cause tears, which lead to leaks & in case of fuel filters can introduce air into fuel system

Hello and thanks again for the great vid. Australia is a fascinating continent. With regard to your maintenance service, just a brief remark on the engine-oil drain plug. With nearly the same engine in our Ford Transit Camper (2.4l, 140HP, 2008), Ford sold the O-Ring on the drain-plug separately for about 1€ for some years in the beginning of the make, changed then to about 13€ for the combined "O-Ring in plug" combination. From my personal point of view, this is an brilliant example for wasting ressources and raising sales figures on the customer's expense. After buying on plug from Ford, I bought a bag of ten aftermarket O-Rings, which work fine as the Ford O-rings have done in former times. Wish you all the best. Heinz

On my Defender I have relocation cones fitted. That prevents the spring from falling out when it dislocates on full axle travel. But, the problem with that is you can't fit air bags. You need air bags, I don't. My 110 is not very heavy.

If that is a re-ocurring problem, that spring, I would fix it permanently, so you don't end up on the Birdsville track, and not being able to fix it. Also always carry proper tools. My heavy duty tools are in my wagon all the time. By the way my vehicle is 2 wd Suzuki Vitara. Last Vitara I had was na 4wd. This current car has a bullbar, plus a winch and I carry Maxtrax, so I don't get bogged.

It's so interesting to me how Australians handle beach maneuvering VS how we do it in Oregon US. I was just out in the dunes last weekend and we drive way closer to the water but based on the ruts I think the sand is far more gritty with larger grains than in Australia. Also I've never seen a air bag jack used in the US. Interestingly, our auto parts stores look 100% the same :) I'm looking forward to see how your adventures compares to my other favorite Australian overlander, Michael from the "Seek Adventure" channel. Did you get a chance to test out the winch?

It's definitely starting to get on my nerves... Thought we had sorted it out in Taiwan but obviously not. We've got some modifications in the making that will fix it permanently. The issue is we can't have the spring move in the upper housing at all because of the airbags air connection at the top.
@mitchlr90

Great stuff guys, really enjoy all the videos and can’t wait to see what you get up to in Australia. In regards to the spring coming out do you have room between the spring and the airbag to use a couple of hose clamps around top of spring housing to stop them coming out? Never had an issue with mine popping out after doing that. Cheers
