+MMArtist141 I'm Australian and can easily admit that by default most American shooters would be much better than Australian shoots due to a better gun culture and the encouragement of shooting in America and because of this, they have more training of actual shooting in both military and police forces, not to mention the fact that when those military or police personnel get back home they typically go out shooting as a hobby in their time off where as Australians see it has a job and typically for most of them do not go back home and shoot. Not to mention the fact that gun ranges are further apart and most of them do not own properties to shoot in Australia, where as in America a lot of public land such as Utah mountains or just anywhere you can take your gun out to shoot. No need to own the land or not because it is public land. The culture is just much better in the US for guns and that and many more things end up producing a lot of shooters who are much better. Another factor is that Australia only has 23 million people and America has 318 million people. Texas, an American state, has more people in it than the entire of Australia even though Australia is the same size (roughly) as USA. Texas has 26 million people in the state, Australia as a whole has 23 million.

Yes, I'd agree... but here we're talking about soldiers and Marines... This involved only a few teams. It didn't look at every Australian soldier, and every US Marine. It's like getting a Platoon and judging the entire armed forces of that nation from that Platoon. It's not a large enough sample size.
@rethguals

+MotiveToKill I'm also Australian, and in the ADF. This isn't true, and Australia's average performance in competition shoots has nothing to do with a lack of gun culture or anything. Indonesia has some of the strictest gun laws in the region and few people there grow up with guns, but they dominate this competition every year because they draw their shooting team from special forces, and have them prepare for AASAM all year as a full time job. By comparison, none of our special forces participate, there's little-to-no incentive for regular soldiers to volunteer, and typically American and Australian teams are just whoever happened to be available. In my experience, growing up around guns doesn't really make that much of a difference. Seen some outstanding shooters who never touched a weapon before Kapooka, and plenty of hunters and prior civilian shooters who joined the Army with bad habits and still have trouble passing the basic shoot every soldier needs to pass to be deployable. Rather, good shooting is a product of good training and individual discipline.

+Sir Pants What about the US army marksmanship unit? I believe that's a full time competitive shooting unit right?
@rethguals
@rethguals 8 жыл бұрын
+youtuber Kinda, but they've got a valuable training and operational role; ie, developing marksmanship across the US Army as a whole, rather than existing to simply fly to other countries so they can upstage their hosts as propaganda wins. I don't believe we've actually hosted a USAMU team at AASAM yet; I'd hazard to guess developing soldiers to compete in the Olympics and Paralympics takes priority over a relatively small competition all the way in Australia.

AASAM's a bit of a weird beast, and I wouldn't use it as a way of gauging which country produces the best shooters. Countries like Indonesia and the Philippines tend to dominate the international shoots because their shooting teams are essentially full-time competition shooters, preparing for things like AASAM all year round. Has absolutely nothing to do with "gun culture" (gun laws in Indonesia are very strict) and little to do with a force's basic training courses. There's a disproportionately high number of reservists and training command guys on the Australian teams, as incentive for regular troops to volunteer is quite poor (no extra pay, no one really wants to visit Puckapunyal), and special forces simply don't attend. For most other countries, AASAM is a bit of an afterthought and the teams they send are typically drawn from whichever unit happens to be nearby, or not on deployment. Then there was also the interesting case of a Chinese team who came first place in a previous biathlon-style event without firing a shot, after calculating the time penalties they'd get for missing every target was so low they could simply run through the course without bothering to stop to shoot. They haven't attended AASAM since. With that said, USMC snipers have always been well-renowned on operations, and well done for their win.

Sir Pants they did not win!! my god I read most of what you were writing about Asians using their best snipers and we don't then you say congratulations to the USMC for winning and they cane 8th!!! Australia came 4th. how did USMC win again? bloody hell then your excuse is that bs about assaam not being an effective way to show who I'd better sniper. China won without firing a shot? what a load of shit. no doubt your a yank then

If you bothered to scroll down through the results, you'd realise what you were looking at was the first of several serials, which were added together to create a combined score for the Sniper Championship (which determined the winning team). That put an American team first, a Japanese team second, and an Australian team third. Yes, said incident with the Chinese team years ago did happen, it was hilarious (just not fully reported via the media, like the Indonesian team assuming the routine range clearance at the end of the competition was those dastardly Aussies checking them for cheating). Nice try, not a Yank though.

I wouldn't know, the last rifle I shot a couple of months ago was a 1936 Karabiner 98k with the Nazi eagle swastika sanded off. It was captured by the Soviets in 1942. How it came to Australia would be an interesting story. One of the other shooters had a SMLE from the 50's with a Star of David on it. Perhaps both came via the Middle East?

They are more like advanced infantry who handle close qaurters combat and demolitions Infact a sgt Paul cale from the Australian 2nd commando regiment has been training your seals in Nevada in a form of hand to hand combat he developed himself with his business partner and black belt from Perth. It doesn't matter what country, whether its your Seals, sas, commandos, gru or any other sort of special forces.. they will obviously beat a standard infantryman.. that's why they are "special".

+axegang red Indonesia wins AASAM because they pick their best shooters out of their special forces and parachute units, and have them prepare specifically for AASAM all year as a full time job. That's right - their sole job is preparing for one small military shooting competition, because bragging about being the best at something in the region is a cultural thing or something (seriously, Indonesians brag about AASAM more than the Americans brag about all the wars they've won). Realistically, Indonesia deserves to win because they prepare the most, but none of the other competitors can justify compromising operational readiness for shiny medals.
@axegangred3180
@axegangred3180 8 жыл бұрын
Sir Pants bla bla bla , we win and has been proven to be the best when it comes about shooting ,, and what make it special to us is because we just used our homemade weapon made by pindad in that competition, it maybe a cheap and low-tech weapon but it succed to make yours look like a junk, in fact they tried to scrap our weapon after winning that competition , they just don't belive it that their Super Duper weapon lose by ours,, what a total loser,,
@rethguals
@rethguals 8 жыл бұрын
+axegang red Indonesia isn't 'the best when it comes about shooting', they just had the best overall team in this competition. A team that spends a full year, day in, day out, training specifically for each event of one specific competition. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's bad; that's how athletes train for the Olympics. But you'll never catch an American or Australian team squandering a year doing that, our priority is training for war. I don't recall criticizing Indonesia's rifle (actually a licensed copy of a Belgian rifle), and most Australian soldiers consider our copy of the Steyr inferior to the AR15 family. That said, anyone with common sense knows it's not the rifle, it's the person firing it that matters. There was a bit of controversy in Indonesia, when their shooting team claimed we wanted to "dismantle and inspect their weapons for cheating". In reality, the Indonesians were asked to present the chamber and barrel of their rifles for clearance, it's a very quick process that takes seconds and is done to ensure weapons are free of ammunition or range produce. We couldn't care less about theirs or anyone's weapons - it's a legal requirement on Australian ranges and everyone has to it, but the Indonesians (not used to our strict safety procedures) simply didn't want to stand in a line with everyone else and cock their weapons.
@axegangred3180
@axegangred3180 8 жыл бұрын
yes indonesian team has been trained very well for this small competition, they trained as a TEAM not Individual, and they proof themselves to become the best team, all year of training are worth it (and that was a real soldier need to do,a proper training as a TEAM), and it's not a specifically training for a specific competition like this, they training for war too, if their proper training for this small competition are worth it, then there is no doubt how they trained for war.
@rethguals
@rethguals 8 жыл бұрын
+axegang red Spending all year on the range training for a specific competition is training for a shooting contest, not training for war. True pre-deployment training is varied, mostly takes part in the field, and I'd think any member of the Indonesian shooting team coming off AASAM would be unready for operations for at least the next year. Not that there's anything wrong with that; Olympic shooters train that way, and an army as huge as Indonesia's with a currently low operational tempo can easily justify detaching a couple dozen guys to train for a non-essential event every year. For American or Australian troops, no they cannot - most spend the majority of their year out field training for their next deployment, if they're not overseas already. That's why whenever an Indonesian pipes about AASAM claiming they're the best shooters in the world, I shake my head. The only competition that really matters is actual operations, when the targets shoot back at you.

Why did Canada have to use American 50 cal ammo to get that title at one time just to have it taken away not long after? Answer because they aren't the best. America has held that title multiple times. A lot more then Canada. Their snipers arnt shit compared to the US snipers.

+GTS300Coupe 1RAR and 2RAR aren't Commandos, Australian infantry are no less qualified than US Marine infantry are (look up the training courses and weapons qualification each force gets, they're very similar), and Australian special forces simply do not attend these events as their operational and training obligations take priority. It helps that these Marines belong to a dedicated shooting team, but at the end of the day they were the better competitors, well done to them.
