John Orloff has said that killing Biddick in this episode went through many iterations. There are at least three contradictory versions of how he died depending on which official source you go to. Two of them were much more gruesome than what we see in this episode. Seing Barry Keoghan burn to death as his plane crashes migh have been a little too much so early in the series, so they opted for him attempting to crash land the B-17. His body was found hanging from a tree several months later by some local farmers, so he did try to jump or was ejected from the aircraft.

The next episode is the first one with Rosie Rosenthal who will become a major character. You will be following him. This miniseries has 9 episodes and a documentary The Bloody Hundredth to complete it.

Lt Curtis Biddick's death was a lot more graphic than the show depicts. I'm assuming it's because censors may not have allowed it. The oxygen tanks got hit and the cockpit was engulfed in flames. Biddick kept the plane level as long as possible to allow any surviving crewmen to bail out. I also remember seeing reports via other navigators saying his copilot Richard Snyder climbed out onto the wing to attempt to bail out and his parachute got caught on the plane. I may have misspoke on some facts. There's a channel on here called Reel History, Jared Frederick breaks down each episode of Masters and corrects any inaccuracies. He also has Band of Brothers and Pacific episode deep dives too.

@@bernardsalvatore1929 Yeah, I love Dr. Jared Frederick's content. He has a great respect for history. I read two of his books Hang Tough(Dick Winters book) and Fierce Valor(Ronald Speirs). Both are great reads. I've also Read the Ambrose books Band of Brothers and The Pacific, as well as Leckie's memoir and With the old breed by Eugene Sledge. I recently began reading Masters of the Air by Donald Miller and will eventually get read a wing and a Prayer(leaving out the author to avoid spoilers)

There is no censorship with streaming. Especially, if the series is rated TV-MA. The director just wanted to give Biddick a heroic death, instead of a tragic and historically-accurate one. Besides, the character is virtually entirely fictional apart from his name and when he died.

11 out of 21 is NOT ALRIGHT. That’s 100 men dead or missing in one group. Remember the whole mission was 300+ aircraft. A total of 552 were killed or missing on this single mission.

Yea that was a big error on my part. I was going off the 70% casualty rate that i saw in one of the comments. My bad. 💜

There was a lot of negligence during the air war, until late-1943/early-1944. Though, some of it was due to lack of resources. Which, despite all its flaws, is something “Masters of the Air” does portray well.

Also this is the second time I've heard you misspeak the Americans were NOT the Royal Air Force, it was the American US Army Air Force!! The Air Force separated into its own branch of the service in 1947 after World War II. But at this point in time it was still the Army!!❤

The later taskforces had it even worse. The first was limited by time, they had to take off to make africa before dusk, the other two were not as well trained for flying in fog and not being time constrained, waitied, but after the first passed through and heading south on top of the late delay the luftvwaffe had time to rearm, refuel as well as bring staffels from out of range to hammer them relentlely on the way in and on the return back to England. All three groups had a combined loss of 60 bombers and just a few weeks before the 9th air force in africa lost 53 on a raid to Ploesti for destroying german oil. Barely 3 weeks, about 1000 men killed or captured.

No one is protected by the script. I know you said you don't feel like they are but they are portraying real people and if someone died in real life then it doesn't matter if the person is played by a bigger name.
@ChienaAvtzon
@ChienaAvtzon 21 күн бұрын
Actually, one thing “Masters of the Air” did right was cast bigger-named actors to portray men who either die or get captured. Since, in real life, it was unpredictable who would be a casualty and who ended up becoming a legendary war hero.

The answer to the riddle is to ask one of the devils where the other would tell you to go. The truth teller will point at the road behind the other guy and the liar will point at the road behind himself. Either way, just avoid going down the road they indicate and you are fine.

ELIE, in your spare time if you want to research search the KZfaq algorithm for a gentleman by the name of Joseph "Lucky" Luckadoo (yes that is actually his name)!! There are several interviews of him on KZfaq that you can find and he tells some very interesting stories about what he calls the 4 F's Fear, Flak, Fighters, and Freezing!!! He's a very entertaining character to listen to!! As far as the death of Curt goes, supposedly they kind of downplayed it a little bit!! In actuality he was burned alive as the plane descended to crash!! There are eyewitness reports of seeing the cockpit on fire before the plane dropped out of sight!!! There's a professor that does analysis of all the series (BoB, Pacific and Masters) but in THIS one he gave some very interesting information to each episode!! He has a KZfaq channel where he analyzes each episode separately!! It's very interesting stuff!!! The guy is a history professor so I'm going to say that pretty much everything he says is accurate!!! I am enjoying your reactions and some interesting remarks that you have made!! Keep it up!!

The Norden bombsight was wildly overrated. It was damned well better than the next alternative, but analysis showed that bombers were lucky to get their bombs within 5000 meters of the target. Collateral damage was a part of the game that crews just had to accept as part of their job. The Norden was tested in the Navada desert in dry clear sunny weather in optimal conditions to excellent results. In the choppy skies above Europe with German flak and fighters disrupting the bombadier's concentration and the target obscured by cloud cover most of the time... Well, it was not optimal.

Donald Miller's book makes a great many observations that put things into perspective. The scrip writer John Orloff said in an interview that modern airlines provide emotional and psychological support for survivors of an air crash. The effects of surviving that kind of event is devastating. In WWII air crew were expected to sky dive from very high altitudes and from aircraft that were on FIRE, then pick themselves up and get right back up to evade capture and attempt to return to get back in to the war without any emotional support to deal with their obvious PTSD. It's insane! The Quinn story line was an inspired one.

If they were assisted by the resistance of an occupied country, they did not go back to war. It even says so later in the series.

@@catherinelw9365 - Exactly…. downed airmen were sent home, or put on desk duty, if they evaded capture. Only in very rare occasions were they allowed to continue to fly. Crews were also sent to “flak houses” to recuperate after traumatic missions. Which is another thing the series deals with.
