I served on an Italian made M5 105mm howitzer in SE Asia in 67/68. Today's gunners have to work a lot harder than we did, although they also have the technology we didn't have. Ubique.

No more digging in a piece of Field Artillery and camo nets over the top. Today it is shot and scoot...! Before the satellites pin point your position for a counter strike...!

If you get DF'ed, it must take a long time to bug out. The sooner we get SPA the better and if there are any drop shorts reading this, surely there is still a place for a lightweight quick setup 105mm pack howitzer? Something that is easier to set up and pull down and maybe for defensive positions such as FSB's.

105mm systems fell out of favour because 4 M777s can achieve equal and greater lethality then 6+ M118/119s whilst also being light enough to be air mobile. The biggest issue that we’ve had with the 777 is that it was never designed to be a field howitzer, it was designed to be air dropped into a FOB/FSB with the tires only being rated for sealed roads. We’ve tried to employ it as a lightweight M198.

That is a very slow process to shoot and scoot .. your army ( actually all armies around the world) should leave towed artillery and start replacing them with self-propelled artillery In Ukr_Rus war towed artillery have a high probability of getting destroyed by counter artillery and loitering ammunition strikes and m777 is not different
@sesameseedbar8853

They can set up a hell of a lot quicker. This is pre-exercise event. It's before a training event. Basically just go out, make sure the gun works, clean it, pack up and prepare for exercise when it starts, the next day. There's no need to rush. In exercise and ideal conditions, one of these can be deployed, set up, shoot 4 rounds, pack up and displace in under 10 minutes with ease.

Towed howitzer has advantage of being air inserted by helicopter.
@5RndsFFE
@5RndsFFE 8 ай бұрын
@@sesameseedbar8853maybe they can do all that in 10 minutes, with a slick and well drilled detachment but it only takes 90 seconds for counter battery as has been shown in the recent Ukraine/Russia conflict. A lot of the newer SPH systems can emplace in 2 minutes, fire a burst of 3 rounds and then displace in 1 minute, this greatly reducing the chance of CBF. Of which not much matters due to the over saturation of sensors in the current battle space.

@@stephenrogers7362 I can look online for the Photo's of those exact Australian donated M777's plus our Bushmasters, M113 A.P.C.'s and M113AS4 all burned, destroyed, captured and DISPLAYED AS WAR TROPHIES in Patriot Park Moscow. Onyx listed most M777's are destroyed, the rest are u/s with broken barrels, recoils, trails and sights due to no spares being sent with them, and no one to maintain them anyway. In 21st Century the M777 is fragile, high maintenance, slow and antiquated. It can't evade or hide or move away from C.B. fire or Drones. It is a fat slow obvious soft target. We're not fighting farmers and goat herders any more. It would have been great at F.S.B. CORAL in 1968. In 2023 it's good for recruiting kids and War Trophies. Gotta admit, as an ex-Digger seeing IDENTIFIED AUSTRALIAN ARMY equipment as someones else's WAR TROPHIES from someone else's War does shame me. And surprisingly, people die in Bushmasters just as horribly as any other P.M.V.. Peace.
