I was never much of a fan of either woman, but this match changed my outlook on both of them. For one, Wozniacki had just won her first slam, which is noteworthy to say the least. But it was the runner-up in this tournament, Halep, who really stood out to me as a true force with which to be reckoned. The next year and a half of Simona's career after this match would punctuate that notion of course, but I really gained a lot of respect for her game and competitiveness afterward; no longer did I regard her as some sort of choker or underachiever. I did watch the French Open final later that year, where she won her first slam, noting to myself and others that again Halep really let it all out during that match, as in the above final, having made me sense that she would have died to win that title on that day (luckily for all involved that was not necessary)! The 2018 Australian Open Women's final match could have easily gone to Halep, and I remember feeling that the serving order in the third set played a role in deciding the eventual champion that evening, with both players struggling to hold serve toward the end. Anyway, an exhausting, furious, and gritty performance was given by both contestants that night.

AO seems to be the only GS that gets competitive finals. This decade, 6 finals have gone to 3 sets, including the last 2 which were played for the #1 ranking. I think combined, the other 3 GS, have had 8 3-set finals in the last decade.

Wozniacki's leg hurt so much that after the MTO she was running from a side of the field to another like a rabbit. Ugh! how much I despise the gamesmanship!
@DreamOnW
@DreamOnW 5 жыл бұрын
And Halep wasn't running like a fricking rabbit after her MTO? Caro had problems with that knee for years, just because she got it taped doesn't mean she couldn't run anymore, it was a long, tough match, she started to feel discomfort in the knee that's why she took MTO to tape it!
@rgrey1551
@rgrey1551 5 жыл бұрын
@@DreamOnW No, Halep wasn't running like a rabbit after her MTO, she was exhausted and was cramping, everyone could see she was almost done. Did you watched the match or what? Moreover, Halep ended into the hospital due to her exhaustion after the match, while Woz even forgot she had a knee injury alltogether, she ran straight to St. Petersburg tournament after AO. Just admit it, she took that MTO to put Halep down for good. Which is called GAMESMANSHIP. Everyone could see Halep was on the edge of collapsing. You, Woz fans, would never accept the truth, because truth hurts.
@jacobhaas340
@jacobhaas340 5 жыл бұрын
I think you should take into account her diagnosis. Don't just ASSUME Wozniacki displayed gamesmanship. Last time I checked it's not against the rules to take a medical time out if you feel something not quite right with the body. Maybe you favor Halep, but still it isn't fair to accuse Wozniacki of that. She has been diagnosed with RA which is a condition that affects the body over time. So take that into account. They both took a MTO so your point and accusations seem irrelevant.
@rgrey1551
@rgrey1551 5 жыл бұрын
@@jacobhaas340 LOL don't bring into discussion the RA argument. 9 months ago there was no diagnosis of sorts, as either Halep still didn't knew either she was suffering of hernia yet. Here is not about favoring Halep or unfairily accusing Woz, the truth is Caroline used that MTO to put down Halep that was into a momentum, and everyone who wasn't biased knew that as a fact. Is useless that you try to deny it, you are just hiding behind horse blinders. About being or not against the rules, that's why is called gamesmanship and is not usually punished, this doesn't mean is fair and nice to use it, especially if you are a top ranked player and you are playing a GS final.
@jacobhaas340
@jacobhaas340 5 жыл бұрын
@@rgrey1551 Right I forgot you were the one out there and competing and pushing your body to the limit, not these two women. RA is a disease that affects your body over time, you don't just wake up with it. So obviously it has affected Wozniacki for awhile. I'm not going to "hide behind horse blinders" and argue with someone who thinks they know everything about someone they have never met, Caroline has used a MTO and had the same taping as she did in this match in other matches as well, so obviously NOT gamesmanship. So it's useless arguing with someone so closedminded. So good day to you. I'll agree to disagree.

Halep will win more, due to the FO. 3 finals there and one win. No doubt she can win another one. Wozzy is done winning slams.

@@Kishnabe Really, Simo has the best chances at all of the GS, but Wimbledon, though she's not terrible on grass. Wouldn't shock me if she finishes with 2-3 more FOs and a AO and USO title.

@@karthika560 Again the same old misconception that players will overpower Halep. The only player that ever overpowers Simona is Serena. Sloane doesn't. Osaka doesn't. Pliskova doesn't. And you should try watching her matches. Her first and second serve are much better than what we saw in this match, in which she was fighting exhaustion. She has decent pace and can place it well. And she's an all-surface player and has proven she can win outside of clay.

Future classic imo. Some incredible points in the match, especially in the tail end of it when they gave it their all. Plus there's the story of the number 1 and 2 battling for number 1 AND their first Grand Slam that both definitely should have had already in terms of quality and consistency.

Boring? In tennis? Either you play or you don't: there is no boring in tennis, unless you want violence or swearing or bullying the lines people and umpire. Watch Serena for that: this video contains ladies playing.

@@markshao3901 Who was pushing in this match. Simona had 40 winners to 46 UEs while thoroughly exhausted. Woz had 25 winners to 28 UEs. Both players defended well, but were aggressive. They weren't just pushing and waiting for errors.

40 winners 46 unforced errors by Halep compared to 25 winners and 28 UEs by Woz. How was Simona pushing? Not to mention, Simona was playing this final half-dead and looking like she was about to fall over, and she still was the one trying to dictate and go for her shots. And the match prior, against another good defensive player in Kerber, Simona had 50 winners and 50 unforced errors. Weak players, my ass. If they're so weak, please get out there and do better.
