It seems to me that the choice of disciplines was really made according to Novak's reputation (fast, flexible), and furthermore - in order to EXPOSE that he's not so legendary fast or flexible (by putting him against those who are best in those fields)...Very possible and very hard to prove.

Can he beat an Olympian? He’s 25-11 against a double Olympic champion, 30-29 against a single Olympic champion, 8-4 against another, and then 2-0 against one more. So, yeah, apparently he can. Can’t seem to win an Olympic title but, hey ho, doesn’t look like he plans to retire anytime before the 2036 Olympics -which hasn’t been assigned a location yet, but I’ll take a punt and say - in Kabul (?). So he has plenty of time.
