@MrKurtykurt
@MrKurtykurt 3 ай бұрын
I don’t think he was “making him look good.” Probly more taken aback by how fast that serve came. I say this bc I remember I was recovering one morning after a friend’s wedding and found a “retired pros” tennis tournament and John McEnroe was playing Andy Roddick. I remember thinking I had either one or both of their ages screwed up bc Roddick could barely win a point unless it was his serve. I was so confused so I Googled both their ages and, this was 2016; which meant McEnroe was 57 and Roddick was *ONLY 34 YRS OLD* They were tied 1-1 and the last set went to deuce like 8 times and the only reason Roddick edged him out is bc of his huge serve. But the best part was the post-game interviews where Roddick was absolutely GASSED and looking stunned, but singing McEnroe praises making it clear he was not trying to “make him look good.” Could McEnroe last 3 sets with Joker? Certainly not. This was 8 years ago and Roddick isn’t Joker. Could McEnroe win some points against Joker playing his hardest? There’s no doubt in my mind. Tennis is 90% stroke and placement which you don’t need to be a spring chicken to maintain. And obviously McEnroe has maintained his

@Blaisem

@@MrKurtykurt McEnroe was already moving toward the net on his serve. If he were respecting Djokovic, the best returner of that era, i.e., if it were a serious match, he would not be rushing the net on the assumption his serve couldn't be easily returned. This was all scripted (which is why John had his old racket with him). They probably agreed to do a serve and volley since that is what John was most comfortable with-rallying with Djokovic convincingly is hard and unnecessary for the purposes of the showmanship. So Djokovic hit back a simple short ball, and John was already at the net because he was expecting it.

I remember his match against Slobodan Zivojinovic as if it was yesterday. Most epic match ever. 5 sets full of twists and turns. Thanks for the childhood memories, John & Bobo🙌🏼

Well played all around, to McEnroe for nailing the serve first time and Djokovic for setting him up with the nice volley. This is how you offer up some respect to a legend...

McEnroe really admires Djokovic. That had to be a lot of fun for both of them.

My legend I miss you so much in the tennis circus. I watched all your games on TV, they were great. I will never forget how you played tennis against Boris Bäcker at the Davis Cup on July 24, 1987 for about 6 hours and 30 minutes and Boris won. I was there live You two are diamonds and I want to say thank you for the great time.
