Hi guys! Welcome back to my channel! If you’re new here, my name’s Rachel and I’m a huge Eurovision fan. In todays video, I reacted to Austria’s song for ESC 2022, ‘Halo’ by Lumix Ft Pia Maria.
For some background, Austria have failed to qualify to the final since 2018, after finishing third place with Cesar Sampson. They have sent quite uninspired songs, bar 2020, which have failed to make an impact with the public. However, I think they may have turned it around.
Despite not being particularly fond of club music, I found myself quite drawn to this entry for its nostalgia punch, evoking memories of Basshunter from the mid-2000s, and with hints of 80s synth pop. What this track does well, is it’s ability to use elements of retro music whilst keeping it very fresh and up to date.
The pre chorus melody is probably my favourite moment of the song, where it presents a repetitive and catchy hook which fits the instrumental like a glove. It’s arguably stronger than the chorus.
Pia Maria’s vocals are also very strong and elegantly mixed into the track. The key thing is to get the live performance right - good staging and a good vocal, and this will sail through to the final. It stands out from a wide range of slow and mid tempo ballads this year, which is incredibly advantageous.
The chords are a little repetitive and are not particularly daring, yet I think the reduction of major chords and increase in minor chords and their respective inversions really help the song to persevere with that mysterious and haunted quality.
