For its new DA42 NG, Diamond used Austo AE300 aerodiesels. Here's a video report on the engine's details.

Thank you for discussing the Austro AE 300 Aerodiesel engine for the Diamond DA62 aircraft. Very informative and, for me, very useful in comparing the Cirrus 22T G6 to the Diamond DA62.

More info on the Bosch system please - it has to be specialized for the Jet-A1 fuel doesn't it?

So can you just run Jet-A, or does it need to be modified? I've never understood that.

There's a funny inconsistency between "my aircraft runs on jet-a" and "my aircraft runs on diesel" 😅

Well, the lubricity needed for the low-pressure supply to a gas turbine is less rigid than what is needed for a high-pressure injection pump for a diesel engine, and especially so when talking about common rail pumps working at several thousand bar. oh well, I don't know. i don't run jet-a1 myself but this is what i've heard. I guess it's different for a plane since it is inherently colder up in the air!

not especially so. Hell, on most bosch pump equiped diesels I have worked on they recommend cutting the diesel with "parafin" in cold weather, parafin in those terms meaning kerosean. Jet-A has lubricity increasing agents added to reduce wear on the fuel pumps on those big cargo jets. It's probably a non issue.

This is nothing to stop the presses about. New many new diesel cars today have 36kpsi and some higher. I guarantee you that you'll see injection pressures go up and up even from here. We will also probably start to see ducted injectors on diesels (and even gas engines). For the moment, ICEs are hardly dodo'd.

My thoughts exactly. It seems like the fuel saving cost benefit would be offset by the $30k+ overhaul per side.

He quoted $17K per side for overhaul. If that extends 2400 hours that would be pretty economic.

This plane is my dream! One day I want to have one with all the options. Synthetic Vision and all that. I think the technology advancements in GA over the last 15-20 years has been absolutely stunning. The speaker here seems nice enough but he's made a cool topic as much fun as going to the DMV at lunchtime. I recommend some more enthusiasm or perhaps a hot chick in the next one.

So it's based on a Mercedes Benz car engine. What happens when MB decides to stop production of this engine?

They'll switch to a new engine. Diamond initially ran the Thielert Aircraft Engines-built TAE 125-01 Centurion 1.7 engines, they then switched to the 2.0 litre engine TAE 125-02-99 and after that they switched to their own Austro Engine AE 300 seen in this video (Austro is a subsidiary of Diamond). They also offer the Lycoming IO-360 engine as an option. Should Mercedes cease production of that diesel engine they will replace it with something newer which Austro could adapt/modify or look for another supplier with something suitable.

that doesnt happen so fast. you can buy spare parts for realy old mercedes anytime. you can have a Mercedes from the 70s and Mercedes will sell you anything what you need to repair such an old car.

Diesel really.. No thanks will stick to my Baron. I could see asking for Diesel.. What??? that will cost extra we don't have diesel at this airport we have to order a truck with Diesel fuel..

It uses Jet-A fuel, which is available pretty much anywhere.
