In this video, I show a three barrel World War II Black Crackle Zippo Lighter. I bought this Zippo from a fellow collector who sold it to me at a very good price. It is in marvelous shape for an 80 year old lighter that was used during War time in both the European and Pacific theaters by the same soldier. Being this is my first WWII black crackle Zippo I am super excited to have it in my collection now.

@@zippolyonsden1623 quick question. Do you have any idea how T-Man died? I have just found his videos and found out he passed way. Seriously tragic. Was wondering how this man passed away

No, I do not know the specifics as to how T-Man passed away. The world lost an awesome person the day T-Man passed away. T-Man, along with ZF77 Outdoors, are the guys that helped me gain the courage to start my own KZfaq channel. I miss seeing new videos for T-Man.

Nice score! I've collected vintage lighters for 30+ years. Zippos were a big part of my collection. Mainly "Big Name" advertising ones were my favorite. The fact that makes me drawn to them is that they're cross collectible and pure Americana goodness. It wasn't til a few years ago that I thought I should add a WWII crackle to the hoard. A friend of mine had a 4 barrel, MIB with the soldier's name written on the original box. I offered him $300, and he gladly accepted. That being said, if one is going to go deep into the wonderful world of Zippo collecting, you should have, at least, one of these in your collection. Even though mine is flawless, I kinda' prefer the charm and untold stories the war used example vibes you get while holding one these in your hand.

Nice price for a MIB 4 barrel black crackle!! Fully agree that every vintage lighter collection should contain at least one WWII black crackle. I'm hoping to add more to my collection someday.

As far as I can tell the reason why they're called "41 replica" is because they were emulating the style of 1940-41 lighters, not specifically the 1942 WW2 black crackles. The big difference between the 42 ww2 black crackle and the year earlier is the lack of chrome plating. I have a 41, it's chromed steel, and a slightly earlier 40, which is chromed brass. But aside from that switch to steel and the external finish they are all identical. Rob G noted that for a short window they did have bare steel lighters, but found that those rusted too quickly thus started adding the baked on black paint which "crackled." 1943-45 Black Crackles are interesting because they are dimensionally slightly different than 42 and earlier, being slightly larger on the inside. Of course there is going to be quite a bit of factory variance, but 43-45 lighters generally had the more pronounced domed top and bottom compared to 1940-42 style lighters, and the inside dimensions were also a bit larger on average. And of course the 3 vs earlier 4 barrel hinge.. My guess is that with speed of production to get these out to the troops as quickly as possible, a few corners were cut in terms of finish work and dimensional tolerances. BTW a black crackle without any crackle is still a very impressive lighter. You are lucky, yours seems to be relatively rust free. If you want to do as little as possible, just clean all surfaces gently (careful of the crackle, that stuff peels off easily) and give it a light wipe with oil to preserve. I know some people are against the idea of cleaning off all the soot and grime, but leaving it also means you may be allowing rust to just eat away at the stuff underneath, especially the cam spring. I sacrificed all of the crackle finish on a 43-45 I have, because the rust pitting was extensive and under the paint. The lighter is now crackle free and covered with the pitting from the rust, but at least there's no rust anymore. And it goes without saying, awesome find!

Thank you very much for all this cool information. Definitely a few things here I did not know. I knew that the crackle coating was added later in the war time production due to problems with the steel cases rusting badly. I figured this was around a 43-45. Still makes it now my oldest Zippo. I was way too excited while making this video, lol. Sounds like you have a really impressive collection. It's cool to know how many of us out there like these little flame makers. Thank you for commenting and sharing with me your knowledge of Zippos. I am always willing to learn more🙂

Nice find. If the lighter doesn't have any rust on it at this point as old as it is, I Don't believe your going to have any issues with rust as long as you keep it in a dry place, and make sure you're hands are clean and dry before handling it. But for a little peace of mind, there is a product called 3-in-One dry lube in a spray on that dries in seconds after applying and forms a protective layer invisible to the eye. It offers great protection.

Best way to deal with any rust without harming value, is to lightly go over the exposed steel surfaces with WD-40, and a cloth. It loosens surface rust, and also makes it rust resistant for a bit too. WD-40 is probably the safest way of doing this as far as I’m aware. It also shouldn’t harm any paint or coatings too

Considering the age of this lighter, there’s a high probability that wick could be made out of asbestos. I’d recommend throwing it out.
@zippolyonsden1623
@zippolyonsden1623 22 күн бұрын
It's definitely an asbestos wick. I don't ever plan on using it, so I'm not worried about it. Most of my vintage Zippos have the original wicks still in them. The two lighters I do use have the new style of Zippo wicks. Thank you for commenting about that, though. It gives me an idea, I should make a video about asbestos wicks.
