In this video, I explore a concept I often teach; the need to simplify and slow down instructions when supporting autistic people. I usually teach that this is because autistic people have slow processing speed... in this video I challenge that concept by walking you through what happens when I'm given directions...
A step into my autistic world which I hope will help you to shape your practice a little

I'm not autistic...as far as I am aware, however, as you were speaking, I was thinking, "I love her curly hair... look how she's organised her books by colour... should I do the same thing? No, I like my books organised by author... is that a piano in the background? I wonder what the title of some of those books are... I wish I had a door like that..." I can totally relate to what you are conveying.

I think I understand. I tend to absorb as much information as possible when receiving instructions. Of course, then I want to think about all the information and use it in my interpretation. This works great in my work which generally consists of analysis and writing, but it does slow down what others consider mundane tasks.

I can handle all the processing so fast if I'm focused.. But Back in my childhood, i used to get lost in my imagination for hours. Sometimes, I feel that i can check the personal informations and the history of people as if i possess their mind and eyes. There are many myths in human psychology and biology.

You said "I think we're just slow, we process a whole lot more than our neurotypical peers". I'd even say, we process way more than is necessary in a given situation sometimes which can make us feel overwhelmed. Does that make sense?

I would add that it would be better to record verbal instructions on a mobile phone for example so it can be replayed back as many times as I wish. Alternatively, or in addition to, writing notes on hearing (if you can do so)

I used to hate asking people for directions, I still do but I've found a simple hack which makes it a little easier for me. I focus on repeating out loud every step that they say. In the past I would often end up asking 3 or 4 people in a row (who all gave me correct directions) because I could only ever seem to remember the first and last part, and the last part was totally useless without the middle. 🤣

What do you think to the phenomenon of finding words like "it" incredibly confusing? One or two of these vague terms and the entire meaning of the interaction can just collapse.

Yah, he's going on with the directions and I'm thinking, which direction do I go to begin with (streets to in both directions)? That direction has a large bush and the other direction has a tree but it's not the end of the street.

My kid is shy and filled with anxieties hasn’t been comfortable since nasty kids constantly insulted my child for not talking and inability to talk. In middle school it was hard to defend name calling or fear that they might say something worse constant in fear. Middle school was the same and now in high school there’s a couple of kids that are cool but can't make new friends and the fear is worse due to low self-esteem and tongue tie even when it comes to someone likable. Its destroying his education is there any evaluation or test to determine what the problem it could possibly be??

Fantastic explanation. I work in mental health field and from now, I'll never use the word 'slow' talking about processing or executive functions in autistic people. Thanks from Barcelona!
