Back in 2018, a father and his son (Jack Ryan) would enter a Rouse's grocery store located in Batton Rouge, Louisiana. Jack Ryan is autistic, and the grocery store was often a distressing environment for him; he struggled in social settings. However on this visit, something the family can only describe as a miracle took place. While in the dairy aisle, a grocery clerk would perform an act of kindness towards Jack Ryan, permitting Jack to stock the dairy cooler alongside him. A small gesture, but it meant the world to this family. This kind act was recorded and uploaded to the internet resulting in a massive support group forming behind Jordan in an effort to repay him for his deed. This support would change Jordan's life forever. Enjoy this heartwarming tale!

The part where Jordan starts to cry really got me. People like Jordan don't see what they're doing as something special. Jordan treated Jack as a human and connected to him; and it came natural. I'm so glad he chose the career path he did too. I hope he's able to continue to connect to people and help them.

As someone with autism, this story really speaks to me. My social interactions are decent most of the time, but I stumble over my words frequently. I have issues with social cues and understanding if I might have accidentally upset someone by saying something brutally honest. That's just me. I understand working at a grocery store. It's hard work, even if it's an entry level job. It hits especially hard for someone with special needs. Life is hard, but finding nice people in this world makes life fun. ☺️

@@A-I_Hits Yeah, you can get waivers a lot of the time for disabilities that are not absolutely crippling if you can prove they won’t effect you in service. Please be aware though, if something is waived it makes it *much* harder to get VA benefits if they can make an excuse for it. So if you end up injuring yourself they may pull the “well, he is autistic so maybe he didn’t understand the danger and it’s his fault” card. Good luck with AF-JROTC, I hope you try out Civil Air Patrol along with it.

It's really gross and ableist when people pretty much act like people with disabilities or disorders are aliens and treat them different, while sometimes you might have to treat them slightly differently that doesn’t mean you have the right to act as if they’re an alien or treat them like they have the same amount of braincells as Patrick from SpongeBob.

I'd never heard this story before. And due to my own struggles, it couldn't have come at a better time. Down to deep personal circumstances, today my disdain of other humans due to their actions towards me and others I love had capitulated into a mental breakdown. My suicidal thoughts have exacerbated and I am close to the edge. I came on KZfaq to distract myself from my internal crisis, and this video single handedly made me remember that I should have faith in my fellow humans, that my experience isn't indicative of humanity as a whole. I like to think I'm a good person, and sometimes feel like it's wasted. But seeing videos like this, as a father of an autistic child, touched me on a level that I never expected I'd feel and reminded me of how much good there is in the world, especially today. Thank you, Jordan. You helped someone else today.

I know it is hard for him to express, but I am sure your son loves you. It is possible to give him as good a life as he can have, and you could give it to him. Delays in development do not mean they cannot or will not happen, you have to be patient and you have to do what you can to help. You cannot dwell on what could have been but will not happen, you must focus on what it is. If you need money to care for your son the way he needs I would consider making a fundraiser for him. Maybe a bake sale or maybe on the internet. People are kinder than you may know. I am sure the women in your life like to bake and I know people like a good reason to have sweets. If you make sure your son knows you love him you are doing better than many parents. I wonder how old your son is. When they are very young it is very hard. I am sure he will grow into a young man you admire. I have an autistic loved one and I know he loves me. I also know, at least sometimes, that he is happy. He gets so happy to see me that he gets overwhelmed and hurts me but he knows not what he does and I know there will be a day where things are at least a little bit better. We have to be patient. I am sure your son likes being with you, being read to, being cuddled, playing. It is not the worst thing that could ever happen. Normal is not something that you must have. If you blame yourself, you should not. I am thinking joining a support group may be a good idea.

I am on the spectrum too. A few years ago I worked fast food and we had this family who came by a couple times. Their little boy, 3 or 4 years old, was also on the spectrum and so fascinated when I vacuumed the rug. It wasn't an electric vacuum, this little push kind, kind of unique and weird looking. He'd run up to me when I was vacuuming and just stare so wide eyed so I'd let him try it himself. One time when I wasn't using it, the vacuum was just leaning against the wall but he saw it and started trying to use it. His mom would apologize for him disrupting me but I always said it's no problem at all, I loved having my little helper around 😭

I'm bawling! We have autistic twin boys and they're both severe, one more than the other and I can't tell you how many times I have seen people look at my sons with this annoyed look on their face because they will get excited and jump and wave just by seeing a balloon. At the same time will have a massive meltdown going into stores because it's just too much for them. This was such an amazing story. I hope my sons meet someone like Jordan in the future so they too can feel like they've accomplished something big.

I feel conflicted because as a higher functioning autistic guy, I’ve found that my lower functioning friends really thrived once they were pushed to succeed in an environment where they had a mentor like Jordan. Jack could have maybe succeeded if his family didn’t decline the job if he had help at the beginning, which Jordan and the store seemed to want to provide anyways. Autism is a weird condition where we all have the potential to help each other raise functionality as a chain (Neurotypical person teaches highest functioning person>then they teach a regular high functioning person>then that person teaches a slightly lower functioning person and so on), and we can improve from where we were at as children even if it’s a small amount. It’s definitely easier to learn a skill from another autistic person but it depends on the teacher, but sometimes I have learned a skill better from an assumed neurotypical person if the autistic person who taught me was a little bit too weird with the description of the task. Social skills translate better between autistic people, though.
@zinh3d
@zinh3d 2 жыл бұрын
They probably should have let him try the job, but we don't have a lot of back story on jacks autism. My son who is on the spectrum (High Functioning) and works at a Starbucks deals with the "Why is he so weird" and "What is he doing?" on a day to day from the employees. It is like middle school but worse almost. I can sense someone with autism now after having a son with it, I wish more people would be more apathetic on the day to day with folks.

bruh, he could've done that so much faster without someone stopping him and knowing companies, he would've been at risk of getting in trouble for letting a costumer play with the product or making/letting someone do his work, but still he prioritized entertaining a curious teen. people get called heroes for anything these days, including shooting dogs while wearing uniforms, why can't he ? kindness is in shortage and has been for a while, specially for people with disabilities who are often misunderstood and pushed aside.

@@ArchiverUnknown This story exists solely to make neurotypical people feel warm and fuzzy inside for being "brave" and "patient" and "kind" to a person with autism, as if the bare minimum human interaction is worthy of praise. The fact that this Jack Ryan guy got so overwhelmed by all the unwanted attention surrounding this video that he can't even go back to the fucking grocery store, meanwhile the dude who did the ""brave, selfless and kind act""" of being friendly to him gets money and a fucking car speaks volumes about who this kind of thing is for. Autistic people are not some fucking circus attraction for NT folk to use for brownie points and """heartwarming feelgood moments""". They're people, just like everybody else, and derserve to be treated as such.
