Our son took off in another direction without us knowing and got lost in Zion National Park. Fortunately, his mother caught up to him eventually before he got to the river entrance. Please leave a comment!

Very glad he is OK! Maybe you could do a little PSA on how best to help a lost kid who has autism? I think there are good members of the public who would maybe help, but might be afraid of making the situation worse.

I remember when I was separated from my family at a large shopping mall back when I was in between Alistair's and Connors age. I was found and reunited with my family by mall security. Being separated from my family at a large shopping mall was a scary experience that I went through as a kid, I am glad that Alistair.

That fella was so nice to give him the Crystal. 🥰 One of my greatest fears, is one of my boys taking off. Before I had my own autistic children, I knew nothing about autism (now I'm like a walking billboard educating as many people as I can) and I used to be judgy of the "leashes" I take back everything I ever thought. I am now too, thinking of getting one for my 4 year old.
@c1arkj
@c1arkj Жыл бұрын
"Sometimes kids run." Precisely! And many times those kids are faster and more durable than their parents. So a lead/leash is absolutely necessary for safety when in a outdoor situation. Thank you for bringing that up.

Also, b.c I have no one else to tell. I'd like to share something with everyone!! I'm a proud momma, this last week my non verbal 4 1/2 year old has been saying actual words! Not without us prompting but still! 🥺🥰 Just knowing he has the capability of speaking is so emotional for me!! Like kitty cat, apple, bye bye, I mean the words are just coming back to back. My son was diagnosed with a low to middle form of autism, when he was around 18months. They wanted to wait till he was 2, but it was pretty obvious. Thanks for reading. Any advice I could give is, label your hearts out (if you are a caregiver) no matter what it is you are doing, eating,showing, talk and tell them, walking up the stairs, brushing teeth, pointing and telling them all the pictures in a book. It's what I believe helped my baby.

My heart literally sank. The fact that all of us parents can feel what you did says volumes. I am so glad you were able to get to him safely. This is a crucial reminder of the dangers we, as parents, face with our kids who elope or potentially will. Being a parent of an autistic child has changed my opinions of leashes and other such devices. I now look at leashes and other such devices as a safeguard and I just make the assumption that their child is a runner. I leave it at that and don't pass judgement any more. Thank you!

Thank God he's ok! Your hearts must have been beating out of your chest! This is one of the reasons we don't take the kids anywhere - they can outrun us and the streets are very busy. My grandson's class (the wrong one for him, they admitted) takes his class to the zoo every Thursday. We keep him home because they wanted us to sign a slip saying if anything happens, it's not their fault. Keeping him home is better than going to jail. I truly envy some of the things you do with your boys - you are marvelous parents :)

It is hard when you think you know but get tangled in an unfamiliar location, I did that once but found my way out, I then worked my neighbourhood explorations in with mental mapping while going to parks then involved studying the maps of where we were going either for day hikes or multi-day camping trips. Another thing my mother did was (I was youngest of four boys) to outfit us in matching t-shirts when we went on vacation.

When I was 5, I got lost on a beach for an hour. It was really scary because there are a lot of people and I don’t ask anyone for help (I am also autistic, but verbal). I ended up at a restaurant like 2KM away from where I ran off and the owner and concerned customers asked me what my mother’s phone number was and I recited to them (I am still surprised that at that time I can remember at that age!). They called my mother and 15mns later my mother and grandmother came to retrieve me. They honestly thought that I got abducted but I just ran away. It was very scary for me too and I was super scared

I’m glad that Allistair is safe! My family is from the US and we are living in Costa Rica for a month. The other day my family was on a hike and I started having like a meltdown from like all the sounds in the jungle where we were crying and my mom taught me this trick that I happened to find really helpful. What you do is you cross your arms over your chest and you tap your arms. You want to try to have your hands touch your arms at the same time. The reason this helps is because it helps like run the executive function like in your brain. I guess it like give you something to focus on. Just something I found helpful for me.

Please read my comment if you baby is autistic 🙏🏻. My son turned 3years on june 19th. On june 9 doctor tell us he has autism as he can’t speak and don’t even react to his own name and always running around and climbing on and doctors tell us he has to go through the therapy for upto three years to 18 years of age. I gave my son a Himalaya medicine named MENTAT and in two months he can speak ABC and one to ten and understand everything. Now He tells what he want to eat and what colour straw he wants to drink. He have 10 picture books and he can tell everything in books. I’m trying my best to explain him everything so he can speak sentences when he go to the doctor for his next appointment on October 10. I tell everyone about that because i want every kid healthy and every parent happy and stress free😊. Also this medicine has no side effect. I started giving him 2nd bottle two days ago after one and half months of first bottle as i can’t find it in canada and i had to order it online from india. May Waheguru ji(God) Bless Everyone 🙏🏻😇

That is terrifying! Glad he's okay, but still really scary. Have you considered the harness you used with Ian with maybe a retractable leash? I know that probably sounds awful but at least it'd give him some slack to wander without getting too far away. Just a thought. Especially because he's going to be able to run faster as he gets older. Let's hope he grows out of eloping.

I’m autistic and when I was Alistair’s age I got lost when we went on a trip to Mexico. We went there to visit Another family we were friends with. I remember that we were swimming outside and then we went for lunch and I remember that one moment the 2 families were with me and then I looked away and they were gone. I knew we were going to a restaurant so I walked into the nearest restaurant. I walked around the whole restaurant looking for my family until my mom found me and said “You scared me” and we walked to see my dad and the other family. (My older brother with severe autism was at home since we felt it was too risky to take him so he was looked after by another family we were close to for part of the time and by some therapists we had in preschool for the other half of the time) Anyways they seemed really upset so I was upset at myself for accidentally abandoning them. But then we had lunch at another restaurant.

Unsolicited advice about driving as an autistic person. You gotta teach your boys to not honk at people when they get that age. I don't do it often but often when I do it's a bad idea. When I see people driving crazy on interstate I honked and got attacked almost. He was chasing me very fast after ambushung me from the exit lane. I care about safety and maintaining my safe distance from the action. I am learning to keep my honking off.

I’m not offended, I just don’t see an issue with the title. 😉 example: “honey I lost my car keys, have you seen them?” Vs. “honey I temporarily lost my car keys, have you seen them?” I don’t know of anyone ever saying they temporarily lost something in a sentence or title, but maybe you have. It just feels excessively descriptive to me. No hard feelings either, I think we just have a difference of opinion and perception. No one else seemed to take issue with the title so I’m curious why this is important to you. You’re allowed to have your opinion of course, so I will leave your comment here. 👍
