What I learned: 1. The car was the easy part 2. Great, no better than great advice on people skills 3. Trust your instincts 4. Under promise, over deliver 5. Choice of product, pad, compound/polish 6. Knowing when its ok to walk away for the benefit of you both Man I would love to shadow a guy like you for a week. Solid advice and great videos.

As the owner of a couple businesses, I cannot tell you how appropriate this video is. While 95% of customers make doing business great, the other 5% can make you a very jaded person as a business owner.

Love this video. This is something that anyone new to any business can use. Been in business for a while now and this is something I had to learn the hard way in the beginning. The only thing missing from this video is how to say no, because there are wrong ways to say no and walk away and there are the right ways.

Well illustrated Darren! Many years ago l had a wonderful and very insightful customer who told me that my biggest problem was l didn't know how to say NO.. It's been about 25 years since and l still struggle with saying NO to people who have unrealistic expectations. Thank you my friend and great job all around! Godfrey Detail Boss

Great video! Where I live, I've found that 95% of my new customers need to be educated about what a detail involves and what they can expect. Most have no expectations besides a clean vehicle. This is primarily because there are no detailers besides myself in this area, so a small percentage of new customers have been simply washing their vehicles themselves, and maybe a coat of wax. Even my regular customers are getting an education from me on latest technology with regards to ceramic coating. I spend a lot of time talking to, and educating my customers. Communication and education makes for a great return customer.

+LoveHealthWealthLaugh All valid points. The problem is the generalization of "people with money". Having money is relative. One man's wealth, is another man's chump change. It really boilers down to a persons mind. There is frugality and there is cheap. What you describe is the difference between people who understand and shop value not price. The converse is people who appear to have money, but are nothing more than hyped up cheap asses with cheap minds and cheap thinking. There is a huge difference. The tick is knowing who you are dealing with and the ability to respond accordingly.

"preserve your wealth" You think that wealth will last forever, that when you die you will take that wealth with you? You are willing to sacrifice your dignity, your face, your image, for the sake of "staying wealthy", let me tell you something, money is there to be spent, you have a lot of it, if you are considered "rich" than a 6-800 dollar detail on a 20k or whatever car parked in a 1 million dollar garage isn't going to break your bank.... You don't have to be cheap to preserve wealth, you want nice things? You pay nice money.

it's a matter of economics...the more affluent you become, the more of a cheapskate you become. it's like a poor man trying to stretch 25k/yr on trying to survive...the well to do are in the same boat a lot of the time, in the sense that keeping up with the greater amount of $ earned or acquired, somebody is gonna get shortchanged, or in the case of Darren, attempted to become shortchanged. good on him for not having any of it.

I remember my youth, taking jobs where I ended up totally lose my arse. I just wanted the work. I contemplated mobile detailing, at one point. After a few years, saying no became easy for me. I like to quote the movie "There Will Be Blood", with Daniel Day Lewis. The character, Daniel Plainview, identified that taking the job would be more trouble than it was worth. And when he was approached by a man, begging him to take the job, Daniel Plainview replied "I wouldn't take the job, if you gave it to me as gift". I think that underbidding jobs is something that all new business people end to going through, no matter what. There might be a small percentage that doesn't. But the sting of working so hard for so little, so many times because someone devalued your service builds you up to just say "no".

Its nice to see that I am not the only one, who have come across these sort of customers, I am in the startup phase and trying to establish a business for my self, but sadly some customers does not understand what the difference between Glaze/Sealent/Wax is compared to a compounding and polishing. A few months back, I had a customer who wanted 3 vehicles done and the price was really affordable, untill I explained him, that this had nothing to do with compounding or polishing, which was what he expected. The order didnt come through, as I told him, it would be more expensive than what he were expecting.

couple days ago my old dad buys a 1998 Buick Century, leather, kept out of the sun in garage but had a layer of road grime all over it. it's tan dust color inside out. I drove it home and realized this car is extra nice. drives like brand new. I washed it outside and out. easy to clean. cleaned the grime from the interior, not hard to do. carpet is perfect. no dings in paint, couple mild clear coat scratches on front bumper that can be improved, and now the interior looks 98% brand new. exterior looks 99% perfect. dad paid $300 for the car. for some reason the hub caps look like they were put in a concrete mixer with gravel, lol.I was thinking about your videos the whole time.

Darren. It's not often someone can hod my attention that long. Well done! I am an auto detail in Sacramento, Ca. (Mose Auto Detailing) and have been in business for just over nine years. I am a one man shop as well as a home based shop. Up until a few months ago I was busy as hell! Booked out weeks at a time....etc. But even now that it has declined a little I have no problem with saying "No". I usually will attempt to add humor to everything I do. It's my strong suit when dealing with people. So I will always lead with the Clint Eastwood quote "A mans' got to know his limitations" and that seems to help soften the blow of them hearing no. But, after all that, I just wanted to say how impressed I was with you, how you handled that situation and am genuinely looking forward to watching more of your videos and hopefully learning more from you in the future! Congrats on all your success!!!

Man Darren you are a real gem in the independent businesses market. Your knowledge and experience is like none other. The "Value" and success of your business is your dedication to fulfill your promise. But to make that promise you need to have the knowledge and experience to back it up. Good service and good labor is NOT CHEAP! Thanks for making these super informative videos about all things business and labor. Good, fast or cheap... not in your world. Anything in life that is of value takes time... If you (the customer) thinks they can do better just give it a shot and see how it comes out... Trust me theres just some things you pay for. Good technique and discipline takes time, and that means years to get right. Keep rocking man! I wanna go wax my car right now!!!

Let me give you the short answer. Be professional, be on time, don't lie to people, do exceptional work. If people aren't beating your doors down with repeat business, you're not doing the kind of work that illicits that behavior from your customers. Most people think they check all those boxes, very few do. That's why most small businesses fail.

I'm not one for listening to someone ramble on, but you had an important point in this one. One that most people don't have the skills to deal with. One thing I have learned over the years is NO just like you have taught in this video. I've had audio customers that have constantly called during the setup process, changing and adding to the install. Finally sending them the new bill they didn't like it. So before I even touched the car I walked away. You came to me because you know my skills. You shouldn't have to question those skills daily to call and ask questions.

Hi Darren. Thank you for sharing videos with us. Saying no is easy but sometimes saying no without explaining why you made that decision can and will damage your reputation. If you need to say NO, most important bit of NO is the reason why. Look ,I really appreciate the fact that so many people are ignorant but that is another issue and the way to deal with that problem comes with your Customer Service skills and your experience. You need to make the Customer happy and if you have a hard customer with huge expectations you need to educate them. What I have found, that most of people have hard time understanding how things work and basics on what you have to deal with to fix their Paint issues. For most people, it is very hard to understand that we have only 1/10th of a millimetre of coating on our cars including all four layers, from the e-coat to the primer, the basecoat and finally the clear coat. Thats 20-30 microns of clear coat before you hit the paint coat. Older cars might have thicker layers and the whole thickness is up to 140 microns ,almost 50microns of clear coat to deal with. Once they understand the structure of the paint they show much better understanding of your issues as a "paint correction officer". Bird and in particular Bat droppings are notary for the clear coat as you all saw in the video. To deal with that without re-spraying i would be trying with several coats of Acrylic filler and/or Duragloss perma coat.

The customer was literally asking for a level of detail that should be expected when you're getting your car *detailed*. I can't imagine what $550 of work would look like, because the amount of shine he achieved is something a simple wax and polish would have achieved with the right product. Personally, I use Chemical Guys or Meguirs. Having high expectations is common when you're dealing with auto. It sounds like he is new to the game of picky customers, meaning he must not have much experience.
@gregwilliams5173
@gregwilliams5173 8 жыл бұрын
Not to start a war here. I also started w/McG's, but I must disagree w/your assessment. CAN one get that level of shine w/out that level of work?? Absolutely. By HIDING the flaws- not repairing them. Proper taping & masking ALONE, on a black car w/a Black SOFT TOP is more work than most "detailers" put in. From a body/paint repair perspective...the imperfections CAN be 'fixed', but require chemicals (& sometimes feathering in clear) that Most people aren't even aware of, let alone likely to have on hand.

I've had a similar experience doing a car audio install as a hobbyist. It turned out ugly but there is a lot to be learned in this video for a newbie like myself... I recently started doing professional detailing as a business despite my years as a hobbyist. Being able to say no isn't what I learned here... It's being able to lower the customer's expectation to a more realistic level given their level of knowledge of detailing. However, it also helped me to learn that if the customer keeps questioning your work(trouble customer), it may be best to walk away as you know the quality of work you put out and how realistic it would be to remove whatever defects are in question.

Hey Darren great video as usual & very true was talking to a friend about a car he intends to buy about £15,000 - £20,000,but he wouldn't be happy to pay someone £60-£100 to look after it wash it correctly so limiting any extra wash maring & provide a protective coating of wax or a sealant once a month,not using any acidic wheel cleaners that attack the clear coat etc.he said he'd be quite happy to use one of these side of the road hand car washes where the equipment wash mitts micro fibres are used on several hundred cars a day,basically aslong as it looks good when first cleaned it's ok,doesn't matter that the paint work is slowly getting scratched and damaged.

Hi Darren! Im so glad I have found your videos Im learning a lot. I have recently started valeting cars around my village and my parents are saying im making a huge mistake by spending 2 or 3 hours on someones car cleaning the outside and inside for only £15. I have cleaned a Renault Captur for a customer which was full of dog hair in the rear seats and boot or trunk area and the drivers seat and footwell and centre console including handbrake etc was full of rolling tobacco and dust. I spent 3 hours cleaning that car. The Customer asked me to focus on the dog hair which I did my best to remove but honestly I dont think he had it hoovered since he bought the car. Which taught me to Price on arrival. Keep up the great vids!

Nice job. Dealing with difficult customers is a skill in itself. I deal with it almost every day in my line of work. I also deal with high end product and high income customers. They can be very entitled. I do my best to be realistic with them and I do more often than not over deliver. That's how you retain that high end customer. You just have to know how to educate your customer. Though you had a tough time with him this time, he was stoked in the end and you also educated him. I guarantee if you play it right with him, you'll have a customer for life. Now he knows what it takes to maintain a car to the level he wants and he's shown he'll pay you for it. Good video! I'm looking to start some detailing on he side and your videos are very informative. 👍

I appreciate the videos-lots of perspective. However, one thing having a business-I have to manage my own expectations of customer reactions. When I am expecting a customer to have a specific reaction to my work (other than getting paid) I am then injecting my own ego into the situation. While have a need to be appreciated is very human it can very easily unbalance a customer/service provider relationship. I have had customers who will never saying anything positive about the work. Do they call me back? That's the compliment. Compliment seeking is about my need that has gone unfillfilled in my life. That need is telling me something about myself-does it make sense to expect that from a customer? Does it make sense to understand what that desire to be complimented is saying about me? You will be the wiser for understanding your repsonse to those questions.

He makes a few excellent points that I have also encountered; One is the fact that people who waste our time want to argue or challenge what we are offering, and cost us money. And then, will they pay after the work is done? And then the "affluent" who really want to control others, who think that they are superior to we who provide services and although polite, condescending and prove their ignorance, yet won't listen to suggestions from service people. Even as a salesman I found that to be true. We have to use the power of take-away such as "no" to get them to listen.

Darren, new subscriber who just came across this great video. What I learned with this video was the importance of the intangibles when it comes to a successful detailing business. Your people skills are off the charts. I also appreciate that you 'stick to your guns' with respect to being one of the higher priced specialists out there. That says a lot!

I'm amazed that I finally found a video that makes so much sense, I tried and looked up for videos such as yours to get some advice and maybe find a detailer that can mentor and I find none they explain how to do this how to do that but never tell you how to go about speaking to customers. I'm glad that you uploaded this video I subscribed right after it and I'm gonna watch more. thank you for taking the time to shoot videos and upload them I know you did it with intent that someone out there will gain something good from you and I have, thanks again I really appreciate you for doing this. I will continue to watch your videos. each one teach one, god bless.

First this is a great video. Heres part of the problem and by some of the comments talking about the guys crappy car(and its not)this holds true. I live in a 2.5 million dollar home Mike Tyson lives on my street. Every time someone comes to the house to do work or give an estimate they see the house and bump up the price. I have another home that is a rental and the same companies come out to do the same work and give a better price. I drive a 2007 minivan, 1. because Im a detailer 2. I dont need an expensive car that will do nothing but go down in value. My home is my investment and I have it because I dont waste my money. BTW Darren is right there are so many people that drive a nice car and neglect their home. Ive had customers in trashy houses that didnt care about the price of the detail and didnt even look at the car when it was done; but they got mad because I didnt put gas in it. Detailers dont gas or change oil so it goes to show you never know why people think they way they do.

A lot of your advice holds true in the tech industry too - set the expectations and be firm - letting the client know there might be a second or even third visit and could get quite expensive leaving it to them and their judgement call.... Also - I would tend to avoid quoting over the phone unless you've worked for them in the past....

Have been down this road with clients and as a consumer with my ex who had someone finally tell him he would not work on his car because he worked on cars not babies. While I so appreciate the love of a great vehicle and it can be almost your baby in the end every job is about expectations and I loved this video. Awesome job on the TT. I got to see the exact issues I have on my black beauty and what I will likely need to have as good expectations. Just had her exterior waxed and polished but I see some things here that I thought wet sand could fix and see it probably won't. Thanks

IN my detailing business i only use paint sealants in my packages to make sure if a customer spends 300 to 500 dollars they get 8months to a year worth of protection instead of a month with wax. Wax only last a month maybe little longer depending on how they wash there car. I would highly recommend you tell everyone they need sealants not wax. Its a waste of time in my eyes but im in Nor Cal. I am also sponsored by the Pacific side of the Shelby car group but don't live in Southern California where its way more money to live. I would love to talk to you about the differences in chemicals we are allowed to use compared to you. Love your videos great job.

One huge thing I noticed is when talking to a customer, you don't want to use certain words. Even in this case, where it seems the customer didn't seem to mind, I would still keep clear of it. The word that you used when talking to him that really caught my ear was "ignorant," in regards to his knowledge of what he expected from you. Regardless of how it's used, I just wouldn't. I think think a better non-abrasive word would be "mis-informed." Just my 2 cents. Other than that, great video, great knowledge, great info for, not just detail or similar sales, but sales in general.

When I ran into these "potential customers" and I've explained in detail about how it will never be the way they expect it to be, and they still say "Do it" ,after I said no, I would say yes, but my bid would be much more. If he said "too much" I didn't care because I didn't want to do it anyway.

You pointed out some great tips on how to begin to do business with a customer before doing the job. I also strongly agree both ends have to come to an agreement as clear as day so the customer knows what he or she is paying for. That's good you were a straight shooter on what was realistic and what was not based on the current condition of the Audi TT. Neglected 2004 in black, good god! He also had to nerve to throw a few curve balls at you, but maybe it was not intentional. Some people just don't know and you came through to the rescue. You pretty much adapted as any solid professional would have. I have been thinking about opening up my own personal auto detailing at my house. First start out local and eventually do what you do by going to the customer. Have you discussed about pricing? I understand experienced will charge more, but what about someone that is starting out. I'm pretty good at detailing my own cars, but I want to push myself more to become a pro at it over time. I enjoyed your video and great real experience knowledge!

lol my mate new i was running a detailing business and industry trained, mind you... no one really taught me paint correction. But anyway, I kept telling him how expensive a good buffer and compounds are and about pads etc, but he was hanging out with a hobby detailer pretty often and going on about cheap machines etc that they purchased from a cheap ass auto store. The next week he's got patches on the boot where he went through the clear coat trying to get get out bird dropping stains. Had he just asked me and sucked up his pride, I would have straight up told him it wasn't coming out. lol ...some people. Doesn't take long to find out what does and doesn't come out and can't help but think you are pretty silly if you sit there buffing or wet sanding the same spot over and over... so far I've never gone through clearcoat and i've done a loooottttttttt of buffing. Mind you ive done gel coat on a jet ski too (that was weird!) and a few single stage white toyotas...

oh man i know how you feel in these situations. my parents own restaurant and i had customer complaining for extra sauce. Its chinese restaurant and they asking for plum sauce for the egg rolls. The problem with some customers is that they freaking dip one egg roll 5 times and complain there isn't enough for what we give them. First of all the sauce is homemade and sugar cost loads of money. thats why our plum sauce is better than those in grocery stores. then she starts comparing a franchise ketchup to our own product. i'm just like wtf at this point. she says sauce only cost like 30 cent to make and we charging 1.50. If customers think 30 cent and 1.50 isn't much to the business owner. then why does a customer think that way too? I was not going to give her anything for free. Some people jsut complain and complain. I just don't see customers ranting when they decide to pay $1000 for freaking wallet by Coach or LV?

I have a interior design and renovation (homes/offices) company and our percentage of super critical clients are like 25%. We do a lot of custom made furniture, so its handmade most of time. Some of our designers/sales have great deal of difficulty handling those clients. Its hard and you need to learn the game how to handle those clients and how to talk down their expectation to something more realistic. After all we are just selling an illusion, one that makes a client happy. There is no such thing as perfect, it never is.. if they are paying for it :) Of course we can say no to those people, but its also very rewarding if you know how to deal with them.

Darren, I've only seen a couple of your videos, but this one I got to admit is just astonishing. I agree, all of these factors didn't add up. Frankly, no offense to anyone, but its an Audi TT, 2004. C'mon.. I understand peoples finances are their own and maybe for him, that's his best he can do. But your Johnny customer needs that smack of realization still. I say there three types of cars, your 50 footers, your curbside clean, and then your showroom/ show car clean. He should be lucky to be curbside clean after your work if thinks that highly of his car.
