It’s a system on a lot of modern cars that automatically turns the engine off while you’re stopped at a traffic light or stop sign. It save a tiny amount of gasoline, then automatically starts the engine when you want to resume driving. It sounds like a good idea, but the fuel savings is minimal, and the extra wear and tear on your engine, battery, starter motor, and electrical system is significant. There’s a button to disable it, but you have to press it before every drive. This little $28 device electronically presses the button automatically every time you start the car.

@@MatthewHeiskell Hey just for the record, it's more about emissions than it is about fuel savings. The fuel savings is just kind of a way to sell the feature to individuals. If all vehicles had auto stop start, we'd see a lot lower air pollution. It's a collective benefit thing! I was also told by the dealer there's a separate starter system for the auto start stop function. Not 100% sure if that's the case, but either way these vehicles are definitely engineered for more starts/stops than a vehicle without it. I would trust the manufacturer to beef up these parts to account for that. Just my take. Thanks for the series of videos on the forester! You've been very helpful so far.

aham right, and how do you combat the pollution when the starter dies sooner? How about the extra money you need to pay for the system? you polluted more to make that money... so yea, tell me more about penguins@@Qhaway

​@@QhawayThe dealer, as expected, 100% lied to you. You're obviously not too car savvy if you're going by what a dealership tells you. I know that sounds like an insult but it's not intended that way. The starting system the auto start system uses is the exact same as the regular starting system. In other words, there is only one starter/starter system, not 2 as the dealer lied to you about. The tremendous wear and tear a conventional starter is going through each time it has to restart a vehicle every few lights is something it definitely wasn't and currently isn't designed for. A person that understands how this works will gladly spend the $30-$90 on a harness that will add 6-8yrs to their starter life. The only systems, currently, that can handle the constant start/stop strain are hybrid systems as they don't have conventional starters but rather rely on a heavy duty electric motor to start the engine, which also performs other function.

@@Qhaway It doesn't save emissions though, it just offsets them. You save the minimal amount of carbon by having your car off temporarily, but then you end up burning that same amount of carbon in the manufacturing and shipping of all those parts you have to replace now that you have worn them out (starter, engine, battery etc)

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the start stop thing. I disabled it asap. As a result, my 5 year old forester still has the same battery!

it's more so a feature being mandated by virtue signalling politicians. They mandate that manufacturers include this technology so that they (the politician) can build their resume and say they are stopping climate change, when in reality it just moves carbon somewhere else
