In my opinion if you can add a rear locker then do so. This allows the ECU to focus on the front wheels only. It will never see the rears slipping and on those crossups that's crucial.

How would all this apply to the 24 Outback Wilderness? I know X-mode is a bit different on this model vs the Forrester and many videos show the rear torq locker working efficiently. And it seems all the big offroad subie guys promote them for the OBW too. Would love to hear opinion.

Hi Matthew, my curiosity was awakened after watching this video. I see that the 2024 Model that we have currently splits the power 60:40 in X-mode if I am not mistaken. Does this mean that the clutch is setup that way that if you lock it fully manually it will remain at 60:40 or will it then be 50:50? Do you think Subaru can program that into the system rather than going the wire route?
@MatthewHeiskell
@MatthewHeiskell 3 күн бұрын
Hello! Good questions! The center clutch can apply anything from 0% locking pressure to 100% locking pressure. I'm not sure if the computer is programmed to use 100%, or if it stops at maybe 75%. In any case, it seems that the vehicles in my video would benefit from additional center clutch pressure when tackling challenging obstacles. Yes, with full center clutch locking pressure you get "4WD mode" or what people call a 50:50 split.

How would you turn a 2017 Crostrek with a manual transmission into a "4wheel drive"?
@MatthewHeiskell
@MatthewHeiskell 6 күн бұрын
The idea is to take control of the center clutch away from the computer. Applying full locking pressure to a healthy center clutch will mechanically lock the front axle speed to match the rear axle speed, making it technically 4WD, not just AWD. You'd only activate this switch for difficult obstacles.
@willba4
@willba4 5 күн бұрын
you cant do it with a switch in amanual. as its fluid coupled, you need to replace the centre clutch with a unit that binds up more. the stock unit is 4kg, and you can upgrade it to 10kg or even to 20kg, depending on how badly you want it to handle when on the normal roads. (but with each upgrade you get better offroad handling) pretty sure alldrivesubaru do these mods in australia. not sure about america this mod is for automatic subaru's only

I agree! With light center clutch pressure it's super easy to break traction on a front wheel. This mod would apply full center clutch pressure and make you have to break traction on a front wheel AND a rear wheel.

@@MatthewHeiskell Yes. That is the power feed from the TCM for the solenoid. Remember it is pulse width. The signal will look like a square wave just on low to high frequency scale for more lock up. Haha, I'm pretty sure that you could modify it in a reversible manner. It's just a single wire that you need to work with, the AWD solenoid. If you identify it at a connector, you could de-pin that wire from each of the two connectors. No cutting required.

@@MatthewHeiskell Why didn't X-mode apply brakes to the Crosstrek's spinning wheel (which should have applied power to the front wheel-with weight-and the rear, locked axle)?

Milton's Crosstrek does not have X-Mode, it has an earlier version called VDC. It works the same way but slower and less aggressively. I agree though, with his rear locker he should alway have traction with the rear axle. . . The center clutch just needs to send it back there.

For those who have the torque locker in the rear, what's your on-pavement experience? We have a 2023 Ascent with the rear torque master/locker and when accelerating from a stop, normally when turning onto a road it often SLAMS the rear end (guessing it's locking VERY harshly) even with mild/moderate acceleration. I have to barely touch the throttle to keep the rear-end from having an extremely harsh 'lock'. Some times it won't immediately lock, so it's ends up going CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK when turning onto a road from a dead stop. Very shaky back end. Rallitek tested it said its working as intended. We recently broke both rear axles at the same time pulling out of a parking lot onto pavement when it locked, which people say should not happen with the locker. Feels like it's too aggressive under light throttle. Maybe it just doesn't work well with the Ascent? We have a 2" lift as well. I'm jealous of all those awesome front bumpers! Not much available for the Ascent. :) We live close to Tahuya (south king county), would gladly join you all on your next time out! Would love to show off what the Subaru Ascent can do. :)

Hey Matthew, thank you for your video. Believe it or not, it's harder to find a video than it is to get this part now. Now it can be ordered from WRX speed albeit for about $159. But it's worth it to get it in 2 days then to hassle with having it shipped in from Japan. One question that I have for you is when you received yours. Did you receive a approximate 4-ft long l-shaped rubber trim piece? That's about 1 cm. If you were to flatten it out it has double-sided tape on one side of the L on the back side. Mine got shipped with it in the box as well as with the rubber protector that you so perfectly installed. You did a fantastic job. I was just wondering, I got the one-page Japanese instructions translating them out into English and on your video I see you have the rubber mounted almost down flush with your lip. We both have the crystal white Pearl that is I think. Anyways, the question is, did you receive only the rubber tailgate projector or did they include a very thin approximately 4 ft long l-shaped piece? I'm trying to figure out if this is supposed to go on the back side of the lip of the tailgate. It just seems to serve no functional purpose. And thank you again for putting up this video. It only has 448 views but I tell you you did a spectacular job mounting it cuz I saw the amount of 3M tape on it and the Japanese are not messing around. There's about three rows plus big pieces on the end, so I'm not sure if you after you mark the center with the square went from left to right and put it around the curvature of the tailgate with the tailgate in a upward position. This is problematic because that 3M tape has extensive grip and it's once and done and with that much 3M double-sided tape on it it's got to be put on right the first time. It's just much more demanding than cheap Subaru bumper guard which has one or two strips and you've got a second go at it if you don't do it right. So sorry for the long post but if you could detail if you removed the 3M on the one or the other ends and then approximated it and then worked. It slowly left to right or just pulled all the tape off and went to town but it looks fantastic man!

its not about being in the powerband as it is about have a mechanical advantage with more wheel torque with a lower crawl ratio. Wheel tq = engine tq x crawl ratio. being closer to peak power (more revs at lower speed) is a secondary benefit.
@jellipig
@jellipig 18 күн бұрын
its not so much about x mode and clutch slipping on manuals as it is about the lack of torque converter, which results in lower peak wheel torque. Remember torque converters can multiply torque which means climbing steeper grades. not having to slip clutch is a secondary benefit to autos

Very nicely explained. I'm not sure why you started with a Subaru though. It's engine hangs out entirely ahead of the front axle line making for a limited approach angle. Also, a CVT doesn't seem ideal for off-roading.
