In this video I finish up my 32RH automatic Transmission swap in my 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ.
I take it out to the Crawling for a cure event in Tahuya Orv Park. I test out the Auto for the first time, do some four Wheeling, and have a discussion on what people think is Better.. Automatics or Manual transmissions offroad. As you will see in the video I love this new transmission, it is soo good.

Sounds like you guys that dont like manuals arent geared correctly. Dual cases is insane control. And eliminates most of the complaints that you guys have. I have 10.3:1 atlas and it was the best single upgrade i have ever purchased.

I despise automatics in general and don't much like them off-road in hardcore terrain either. The only way an automatic makes more sense to me than a manual wheeling is if; you're just looking to go cruising scenic trails for a nice relaxing day, you have a rock bouncer and you enjoy being wide open with the rpms screaming, or you are a rock crawler and you can't afford the right gearing to make a manual work well in highly technical trails. But, as long as your happy and out wheeling, each to their own. You'll never justify a manual trans to a hardcore auto guy, and you'll never justify an auto to a hardcore manual guy.

Both definitely have their own pros/cons Depends on the individual preference And please to those hard-core one sided.. you have to at least try both back to back to truly know what's best fit for your needs at the end of the day.

Auto for rock crawling. Never stall, more control, safer on the vehicles parts, less damage to the tracks the list is endless.

Two footing it (brake & gas) will help wind up the tq converter allowing for a bit smoother transition between stop and go in technical places. Something to play with if you haven’t already.

I like my auto for the comfort and ease of driving. One thing I do for an even more smoother ride is drive with both feet. Covering the brake makes for quick braking on an obstacle , if needed, without any roll back or hesitation

During a water crossing, if you change gears with a manual transmission you risk getting water in the clutch which can cause issues in the future. With an automatic transmission, however, you can change gears or stop driving and no water will find its way into the gearbox. This makes automatic transmissions the better choice for you if you know you’ll be facing a lot of water crossings with your 4×4.

I have Both and I like both if im on brutal long distance runs far from home I have leaned to run manual only in that case durability but still love the hell out of my auto. Also depending on type of track or trail. A guy really needs both because neither can out do each other in all situations. The more I drive the manual the more I realize both are satisfactory. At first when I built my manual rig I was like this is alot of work driving but lots of repetition driving it I dont notice it anymore comes natural. Broke my manual reverse once and my automatic been pulled three times in 5 years.

Manuals are fun but you can focus more on the obstacles in an auto like you said. I have driven both. Life’s too short have one of each

I’ve wheeled both a 97 Cherokee manual on 35s and a 04 jeep lj on 37s. I could do green and blue trails in the Cherokee but when I would get on reds you have to ride the clutch a lot. While in our Lj auto I didn’t have to worry about stalling out or getting a whisky throttle.

Automatics are even better when you can shift it your self. I got the slap stick option in my JKU I can down shift when ever I want and usually can up shift when ever I want sometimes it won’t doit but more often then not you’re down shifting when off road and have no issues with that and I don’t mind being in gear a little longer to get over an obstacle it’s not like your going to shift up into 3rd while on an obstacle unless you’re in mud and need to hit it. But definitely automatics especially with the slap stick so you still kind of have that manual option I know there’s a technical term but I don’t know it lol

I've got a 1972 W100 Dodge power wagon, 4 speed manual, manual locking hubs, divorced 205 T-case, no AC, just good old school wheeling

In my 78 Scout I have a T19 Wide Ratio (6.32:1) my twin sticked dana 20 (3.15:1) and 4.88s with 35s I don't even need to touch the gas. Just let the clutch out and go. The only way the wheels will stop spinning is if I push the clutch in. Lots of control in my opinion and I like the challenge

Maybe it is because I am old, but the 32rh in my jeep is perfect. Had a manual in my old Bronco 30 years ago, but been wheeling an auto for the last 20 years without regrets.

Personally I'm not a fan of automatics in general - but the non-electronic 32RH/TF999 is definitely one of the best choices out there if you decide an automatic is for you. Those things are beefy inside, simple, efficient, reliable (for a slush box), and have a strong 6 bolt T-case retention (unlike the GM TH350) Bout my only complaint on them is the difficulty obtaining some performance parts (compared to GM) and the internal governor requires a full teardown for modifications unlike GM where you can easily access & modify the governor via a side cover.

I've had both, '99 Tacoma automatic and a '76 FJ40 manual. Honestly prefer the manual off road. It's a lot more work but I feel more in control with a stick shift. Compression braking definitely doesn't stink as much as riding the brakes down long hills.

I'm 47 been Wheeling since I was 16 I had manuals and automatics totally prefer manual transmissions with a center Force dual friction clutch 529s dual cases 4.7 2.28 spools front and rear locking hubs and hydro assist that's how I built mine crawls everywhere keep them low with plenty of flex

manual is my preferred also but I do have an auto now, I loved having duals leaving the clutch out and climbing everything with 0 throttle, the downside is if you drive a tire into a pinch "like I did" there is no buffer only broken chromoly parts 🥲

I prefer auto xj with 40s you get alot more smooth control on difficult obstacles and you can be very precise where you place your tires and not slip off.

Honestly it's personal preference. If you are good with clutch control a properly geared manual all day. Most people aren't, autos are easy but real nice in tricky climbs

I wired a hand throttle onto the shifter of my 91 yj manual trans so that I could run throttle, brake and clutch without having to finesse with heel-toe on rocks. Used a Hurst automatic shifter with the two finger lock release modified to run the throttle cable. Skinny pedal still worked too.

I just can’t do an automatic Been running my 05 TJ w manual for 10 years never even thought about an auto Just low and go👍👍 Recently put in an atlas transfer case and I can highly recommend this upgrade For me I guess it’s power on demand and roadspeed gear selection that I like most with my manual as it’s also my daily driver However it’s your Jeep do what you want with it ,,,as the saying goes 👍👍👍

The biggest benefit for the manual is transmission strength. Much less likely to break. Just wear out the clutch if you’re doing super slow rock crawling stop and go situations.

depends on the trans tho. Manuals shock the driveline more, the auto in my 2014 jku is a hell of a lot stronger than any manual in a jeep. That old mercedes 5 speed holds like 580 torque stock!

I've only ever driven manuals. Learned on a TJ and drive a JL 6sp 2DOOR. I am imagine an auto would be better/easier on steep technical stuff. I still have yet to go off road soon

The AW4 was a good transmission for its time, but Jeep offers way better options, now. The ZF 8 speed in the JL is unbelievable.

I did find it amusing that you kept attributing Smoothness and Predictability to the auto - I have had the exact opposite experience. I think auto's are pretty difficult to get slow steady wheel spin out of, they are also difficult to keep from lurching off the other side of an obstacle when you just had the torque converter loaded up hard to be able to climb the front side. I spent 8 years wheeling my 92 4.0 YJ hard with an auto and pretty much hated it in the rocks until I put a 4:1 Rocktrac in it which at least made it work decent. But my current rig has a 5 speed with a doubler and IMHO that's like having your cake & eating it too - there is ALWAYS a gear perfect for every situation or obstacle, and nothing is smoother and more predictable than an engine idling in double low with your 150:1 gear reduction turning your tires at a 100% consistent speed.

So far I have had the complete opposite experience, lol. But if I had a good transfer case with lower gears the manual would be much better. I found myself stalling, burning up the clutch and sliding off big obstacles all the time with the manual. One good thing is it made me a much better driver for sure, but it gets old after a while. It does come down to engine rpm, with your torque converter stall speed, axle gearing ect.. well you know. Hopefully it continues to be good, otherwise I still have the manual I can throw back in there👊🏻

I’ve had Porsches, Corvettes, Jeeps, and other vehicles that were all stick shifts, and they’re all fun to drive. But from my own experience when it comes to off roading auto is better. If you blow a clutch in the back woods and you’re alone it can be a problem.

Wrong , auto blow out first any day and u will be stuck with a manual trans u will stick the vehicle in first start the vehicle and continue going and shift by the rps to get u out if an auto goes u are way more screwed.. U can own whatever u want but real driving skills are what they are...

So glad I learned on a manual as a kid. Became second nature in driving… so when off-roading, you get the add-ed extra touch of feel with your vehicle while not feeling like there’s a parallel learning curve.

I’ve driven automatics and standard transmissions in semi trucks, off road and everything in between. Automatic is way better because it’s less maintenance, and better control. The only vehicle I buy with a standard transmission is a motorcycle.

I prefer a manual. Compression breaking down hill is hard to duplicate with an automatic. A sm420 swap in a yj with a 3.8 atlas behind it you don’t have to three pedal it to take off on an uphill.

for simple rock garden stuff it doesn't matter if the manual driver can actually drive a stick. When it comes to actual stuff like dry waterfalls and major pucker stuff I would do an auto.

It appears that most folks miss the point. The main benefit of an auto is variable torque multiplication. The side benefit is working two pedals when going over a rock/root off camber switching on crest. There’s a reason that everyone in motorsports uses manual transmissions, oh wait, they don’t. 😂 That said, I have a full manual control, completely overbuilt 700r4 with a reverse shift pattern for my LJ. Because it’s simply better than any other option I’ve run, by far.

I have a 32rh in my TJ, I want to do a TDI swap but people are saying that the 32rh won't be able to handle the torque. I am just trying to build a DD/ weekend warrior rig. Nothing close to the monsters you and Nate drive!

A stock 32rh probably won’t last long. Good clutches, a shift kit and a good cooler, it would probably hold up just fine.

I like the idea of a full manual valve body for utility purposes as i use my jeep as tool a lot on my land but will be drove from my house to the trails. So I'm curious about the billet accumulator and the manual valve body and wether or not I'd like it on the street

If I was driving it on the street more, I would probably make sure it has a lock up torque converter for a little extra at higher speeds and I would not go with a manual valve body, I believe cope racing transmission has a valve body that is an automatic but upgraded.

interesting video and it reinforces might thoughts. I think if your not a super pro, the automatic frees up some of your attention for driving.Since I want to drive my CJ7 on the road as well I would like more gears. I was thinking about using a 4/5 speed from a dodge Dakota or Ram. do you think that would work? And i would like to use the old T18 transfer case. can I get adapters for that? thanks

One constant when wheeling is that crap breaks. I'd much rather have a manual in that circumstance. Broken auto you gotta get towed out. If a manual breaks which it is much less likely to do, you can probably fix it on the trail if you need to.

Autos trans rarely break. Thats the whole point. With gears there is only two teeth taking all the force at any one time. There are no gears in an auto. Only clutches and bands.

@@patrickstep what rock have you been living under? I have had 3 cars in my life time with automotive transmissions that broke while only used on the road. There are multiple businesses in my area that specialize in repairing automotive transmissions. If they "rarely break" what keeps these people in business? Also I've never broken a gear in a manual nor has anyone I know.

Any manual transmission can crawl just as slow and easily as an automatic with very little use of a clutch if you gear correctly. People who prefer an auto have never driven a twin stick transfer case geared nice and low. Doesn’t even require gas pedal input, she just does.

Newer jeep with autos are ridiculously easy to select desired gear. I don’t understand why anyone would want to own a stick. (I’ve done both and auto is better)

I have done both and with the proper gearing you can get a lot of control with a manual. But in this case the auto is the way to go👍🏻

used to be all manual... then i destroyed my ankle and had surgery. since then, i lack the ability to have any "touch" on a gas pedal and got forced into auto... i actually like it better. my jeep is universally recognized as the worst best jeep ever... a TJ wrangler with a 2.5 and a 3 speed auto. does everything i ask it to (off the highway). hangs with JK rubicons without much effort.

Is there any reason you didn't go with an aw4 auto? I'm guessing the yj automatic probably has more aftermarket support?

When I started this project I didn’t do much research to be honest. Found an 32rh for $100 and bought it. It sat around for a while before I got to working on it. But I am glad in the long run I did it. Aw4 has less aftermarket support and you have to run some electrical systems to make it work. I like mine is full manual, no electronics.

Autos trans rarely break. That's the whole point. With gears there is only two teeth taking all the force at any one time. There are no gears in an auto. Only clutches and bands. So more surface area to apply force. They also have some give to absorb extreme force. With manual and extreme force they have no give so they break. The only downside of an auto is the price, they are not cheap

I’ve had both. I prefer a bolt action over a auto Bruce Jenner for better control over the shifting & engine breaking & I’m not a pro at driving a stick.

I like manual so much better but the problem really is the crawl speed with 35"+ tires if you don't have a t-case. I like that if you have an auto you can run 40s and avoid spending thousands on a Atlas.

Yup, with the stock t case 5.38 in the axles and the manual, the crawl speed was still was too fast most of the time. The auto definitely helps with that.

The last automatic I owned was in my Silverado that was stolen in 1992. Even with the POS 6 speed my TJ has, I will never go back to an auto. They are simply too boring.

Chrysler has the worst transmissions. I spent $6500. On my 05 Dodge Ram 2500 to get the transmission were I wanted it. It took a dump at 130000 miles while pulling my toy hauler. Browns Diesel rebuilt it with all Goerend Billet parts, and torque converter. I have an 05 Jeep Wrangler that’s an automatic, that keeps popping codes from the transmission. I went to Wrangler Fix to change out the PCM. Manual transmissions are so much easier and cheaper to deal with. ANY AND ALL automatic transmission from Dodge SUCKS! I grew up on Chrysler products, but they need TRANSMISSION engineers to produce a quality product.
