Autoharp 101, performed by Bryan Bowers (www.bryanbowers.com). In concert at the Institute of Musical Traditions(www.imtfolk.org) Monday Night Concert, Rockville, MD, USA on November 10th, 2008.
From his rather unglamorous beginning as a street singer, Bryan has become a major artist on the traditional music circuit: he has redefined the autoharp and is also well known as a singer-songwriter. For nearly three decades, Bryan Bowers has been to the autoharp what Earl Scruggs was to the five-string banjo. He presents instrumental virtuosity with warmth, eloquence, expression and professionalism.
As always, we gratefully thank the Maryland State Arts Council (www.msac.org), the Montgomery County Arts & Humanities Council (www.creativemoco.com), and all our other donors, supporters, and volunteers.

This playing has given me great joy. I have just discovered the autoharp which in Brian’s hands is magical.

Ah the memories of my days chasing Bluegrass Festivals all over the DC metropolitan areas. Made some great musician friends including John Harford, Doug Dillard, and a crazy autoharp player named Bryan Bowers. I remember sitting in the bed of Bryan's Old Yellow Pickup truck with the Dillards and inhaling some rather intoxicating fumes that were present. Later Bryan performed his famous autoharp lesson while "slightly" HIGH. Here he is remembering those days years later.

I had the opportunity to hear Bryan perform some years ago, what a treat! I've discovered the virtues of a diatonic harp (I presume) by watching and listening to him play now that I know a bit more about the instrument. I didn't know why he had all those harps on the floor by him back then. Now I have a notion of why.

Happy memories of seeing Brian playing at Mariposa Folk Festival (Toronto Islands) in the early '70's. I still have his LPs.

I was introduced to Brian's Bower's music at the Louisville Bluegrass Festival in Aug 1987. Bluegrass amazed me, especially through his music, stories and humor.

I want Samuel C. Dixon, Director of Spivey Hall to book Bryan Bowers. There isn't a bad seat in the house.
