A small push and that rod will roll right over that with minimal flexing in the wood and hinges.

A small adjustment in the dimensions should take care of that. That rod can't roll; it's welded to its mounting plate.

its not the latch I see failing but the gate shifting high/low as the hinges on the other side loosen up.

The precise adjustment required by that latch means it's going to have an extremely limited number of applications where it would function without near constant adjustments.

That latch looks like a great idea, until you realize just shoving the door hard enough will likely push the latch up over that very slight amount of latch and render it entirely useless. If someone wants to open whatever door or gate that is, it won't stop them for more than a few seconds.

I mean, its a wooden gate. if they wanted to get in, even with any other latch design you just reach your hand over the gate or through the holes. it's obviously not really meant for security. that said, even with any amount of normal use the small contact area is going to wear through really fast, especially with so much wiggle room to move in the wind.

@@user-ih9bp5bm3y ну да, в этом варианте нужно отверстие под загнутую запорную кулису- тыкаешь палочкой и она открывается. Тут для модернизации куча вариантов. Можна замок, блокирующий механизм поставить. В советское время в основном были варианты с пластиной с прорезью. Открывалось либо торчащей наружу лапкой, либо веревочкой. А так это были просто запорные механизмы калиток, и несли чисто условный характер-что бы дверь не открывалась просто так. на ночь всё равно на внутренний засов запиралось

He's probably just doing these for fun, this one is definitely the worst design 😂. Alot of these designs totally ignore ground contraction/expansion and would only work under perfect conditions. Best latch is one that can shift around, be unaligned and still function. Great skills he is honing though with these demo videos. People would pay for this kinda of work.

Very rattley I’d assume when windy but what also happens when the door or frame settles ever so slightly? This needs to be absolutely perfectly aligned to work properly.

@@NicholasReguin that would be way more of an issue than if it were interior. Not having a solid foundation would make things way more likely to settle then not line up correctly and being outdoors the wind is obviously more likely to make it bang back n forth all night & day.

If the dowel pin just away from the door, the locking rod height can increase to cover the door's lock fully.

This is only good if you can unlatch it from the inside. Otherwise, if it closes and latches behind you, you could be locked up till someone finally came looking for you.

I've seen similar designs, but the handle isn't flat on top, it's angled upward 45 degrees toward the post, so that side is higher when it's in the locked position. About 3/4th the hight of the bar as opposed to the 1/8th or so shown in the video. ♥️✌️

The Rotating rod should be extended on the upper section with more distance between itself and the wood,while the stationary rod should be raised to accommodate,otherwise it's perfectly functional and I believe I've seen these in real life

Good but if you extend the pin further away from the wall and extend the tip and the bottom in contact it gives bit more play but a more secure lock as you cant just lift the gate to clear the pin but yes good demo

If they had spaced the pivot point away from the vertical mounting surface further and increased the length of the portion of the latch above the pivot point for more overlap, it would be more secure.
