The prop valve can also be tested with pressure gauges..the back top out around 500-800 psi and the front are around 1200 or higher..the key here is that they should be different... How to check car brakes . How to check brakes . Brakes not stopping diagnosing troubleshooting metering valve prop valve how to check .

Operation Dominica you might want to check the condition of the brake pads to see if there is any contamination from leaking brake fluid or axle grease seal that could make the brake pads more prone to sticking and locking your wheel. if that looks good, make sure self adjusters are working and adjusted properly. those are more likely to cause your problem than a malfunctioning prop valve.

Amazing. I'd never heard of this..until I replaced both the master cylinder and front calipers...and the front brakes locked up. A friend told me the proportional valve would not operate correctly if the rear brakes were not adjusted or bled before the new calipers were bled. After discovering a broken bleeding valve on a rear wheel cylinder, I replaced the wheel cylinders and brake shoes in the rear, I adjusted and bled the entire system. I just finished. Hope it works Thank you.

This clarified a lot of questions I had about how these things work. All I needed was the extra detail. My understanding is that new vehicles incorporate all of this inside the ABS. Does an ABS vehicle ever require manual resetting of the pressure differential switch, after a sudden loss of pressure on a brake line?

On Hydroboost brakes. I put them on all my GM trucks / tahoes. I have never found I need this Valve. As you drive you learn how much pressure you need to get the job done. During panic braking she just comes to a stop. Granted we don't have snow here. But that is my experience

Hi there, really good video, I have changed from drum to disc on my 99 XJ jeep Cherokee and now the front discs are dragging a lot more, could this be to do with the prop valve residue pressure keeping the front brakes on? Hey, Klowny... I have a 1982 Trans Am (with factory four wheel Disc Brakes), and the brake pedal feels "spongy." The brake pads are two years old, and there's NO air in the brake lines (I've checked). Yet, the pedal STILL fells soft. Also, the Brake Light is always ON. If I put a "stiffer" spring inside the Proportional Valve, do you think that'd help stiffen pedal? Thanks!

Or check that the proportioning valve is bad. If the light is stuck on even without your foot on the brake than the imbalance piston is stuck one way or the other. This keeps the light on. If you have a leak either front or back than the light should only come on when you press down on the pedal. Junk plugs up combination valves eventually.

Awesome explanation. I have a 2006 Tahoe with not enough power going to the rear brakes. When I bleed them fluid comes out fine but they're not giving much braking power. In fact rotors are even starting to develop rust spots all over them bc pads are barely squeezing against them. Also, front calipers and rims get pretty hot. U think it could be this combination valve or that my two front brake hoses are kinked? I've replaced all 4 calipers, rotors, booster and master cylinder. Thanks man.

Did you figure out the problem on your tahoe? My 2000 Sierra 1500 Z71 has been having an issue with the front brakes sticking and getting really hot. It's never both sides at once, but it rotates from side to side. Might be the driver's side one day, then the passengers side another day. I replaced the master cylinder, both front brake lines, and it still does it. The back has disc brakes and they never stick. It almost feels like they barely get pressured because it takes more effort to stop the truck than what I think it should. To me that seems like it would cause the front to overheat by being overused. I just wanted to ask if the proportional valve helped because I've been told to change it. Thanks.

I bought a replacement valve for my jeep the other day. Once I installed it, nothing came out when I tried to bleed the brakes. I took it out and took both sides of the valve off, and holy only the amount of corrosion inside this thing. All holes were blocked with corrosion, and the inner walls were caked in the stuff. if you're gonna buy a used one, make sure you have the seller open it up and show you it isn't clogged or gunked up.

So would a bad combination valve cause an intermittent loss of brake pressure and the brake light go on? Something like my brakes are fine zero leaks, no fluid loss, and the pedal intermittently goes to the floor like a blown line, then you pump it about 3-4 times and it's completely normal.

hey, quick question - my son and I converted his third gen camaro brakes from disc/drums to disc/disc from a 4th gen camaro. Should we get a disc/disc prop valve from a 3rd gen or can we just change out the spring in the prop valve to a stiffer spring? Good video. So now I am thinking I have something wrong with this kind of valve on my 1975 AMC Hornet. It's got power drum brakes all around. When use the brake at normal speed, they work fine, but hard braking, like when a traffic light turns yellow, the pedal bottoms out and car goes thru the intersection. Not a good thing. Shoes are good, wheel cyls not leaking, master cyl I replaced, but same symptom. Could this valve be doing that?

***** if your pedal is bottoming out, you have air in your brake lines. bleed the system, then rebleed again until clear. until then, try pumping the brakes in hard braking situations, and make sure to leave an extra second or two following distance to give yourself time to pump so you dont end up rear ending someone.

I always enjoy your vids. had to laugh at 14:26. "if your light goes on, it could be cuz of this!.... welllll, not cuz of this..." ha I knew what you meant. just sounded funny question for ya. I asked this on Thirdgen.org but haven't gotten an answer. I swapped from drums to Ed Millers C4 rear kit, 12" rotor, pbr calipers, swapped prop valve to one he recommended. minimal rear brakes. I do some autocross and was once told to go with an adjustable in-line valve like wilwood sells for $50. would i simply just REMOVE the spring that currently lives in the combination valve under the master cylinder? have no spring or valve in there and send full brake pressure back to the rears but have it be regulated/adjusted by the in-line valve that I just turn the knob to dial up/down? I think i would have to take the spring completely out and just put it back together with the mushroom cap? or am I missing something ?

I have bad "soft" brakes. I've replaced everything in my car, and have put literally 3 gallons of brake fluid through the system, with no air bubbles. I've pressure bled with a pressure bleeder, I've reverse bled, and I've gravity bled. I don't get any air bubbles, but I still have soft brakes. There are no leaks. Could it be a stuck pressure valve in my proportioning valve? It is the only thing I haven't replaced in this system. Disc's in the front, drums in the rear. And by the way, thanks for taking the time and making the video! ;)

Stone BoDean why do you want to hold it open? you should be able to bleed brakes just fine. start with the wheel that has the longest distance of brake line to travel thru, usually the passenger side rear(look for the splitter in the brake line on or near the rear axle, it is usually offset on the driver side), and finish with the shortest line, which should always be on driver's side front.

My truck is a 1992 Dodge Dakota. The front brake line burst! The rear brakes should have worked to stop the truck. They didn't. The pedal went to the floor. Brake fluid from both reservoirs not just the front shoots out the broken front line when the pedal is depressed.

That should not happen, unless your metering valve isn't working properly. Don't forget to subscribe 😉

I recently went to stop and brakes went to floor, I pulled emergency brake and it failed, I was able to eventually slowdown and stopped , drove van home and it did stop even though brakes went to floor, checked all four brakes, front are disc and were fine, drums were leaking BAD, I changed both wheel cylinders and shoes and all hardware, then I put on brand new master cylinder because my friend who is a mechanic said that's why there was no fluid coming to brakes, after much research it seems like the proportioning valve did its job and is now not letting any fluid anywhere, how do I reset prop valve, much appreciated if any one can help thank you my van is 1995 ford aero star 2 wheel drive rear wheel

You do not have to slam the brakes on to make the proportioning valve work. I think you are confusing people by saying that. It just takes pressure. The proportioning valve simply cuts the pressure above a certain set point.

I ended up on a bunch of these videos because I am trying to get some old eldorado calipers to work on the back of my van. The weight distribution is about 50/50. When the job was originally done I put a disc disc proportioning valve in for some chevy truck application. The van weighs about 8,000 fully loaded for camping. The rear brakes are pretty darn weak. Piston size is 2.5 inches. I bet the front is over 3 inches. Still love disc on the old 14 bolt. A lot lighter. The 77 eldorado calipers were the bigger ones and they had the emergency cable feature.

make 100 percent sure you have these valves checked twice or three times over, because i call a bad proportioning valve the monster under the bed, or king of the nile. because not any ole average joe can drive it down the road and tell its bad. its one of those things that you wont be able to tell is actually bad until your brains are splattered all over the road. i just had to make sure thursday we had one of these replaced at our dealership, and the last one was almost 10 years ago and i hope its atleast another 10 years before i find another bad one

@@klowny1969 sure if you enjoy sloppy seconds or perhaps 3rds more power to ya, doesn't float my boat when I in list to advance my learning from watching someone's tutorial, I personally expect better because there's far better their to chime in on. The subject matter was of great interest to me the delivery though I found redundant and unnecessarily monotonous , there's only so many hours in a day and this could have been delivered in half the time with better preparation . As for trolling an automotive tutorial, that's a first, thanks for the honor but I'll reserve that for somewhere where it matters. Nothing personal just this man's opinion! No Safe spaces here..... I believe that's why they have a 'REPLY BOX'

@@klowny1969 I have an appliance repair business since the early 90s and if there is one thing I'm always reminded of from clients is that I don't want commentaries or long winded explanations from them about the inconveniences they are experiencing or unrelated matters that they think I need to know to resolve their appliance issues, it's exhausting and unnecessary. It's a teachable moment though for me to encourage them to get past the minutiae and to the specifics of what their appliance is or isn't doing. I take seriously, holding myself accountable, to be a better communicator to help facilitate these social interaction with deliberateness and discipline, this is my obligation to our consumers and to myself. There's always room for improvement and and healthy criticism is often times the catalyst for those improvements I never take them personal because it's not about me and I don't make it about me......
