Do we miss the big 5.7L V-8 in the Lexus LX 570 when compared to the twin turbo 3.4L V-6 in the new Lexus LX 600? Automotive Engineer David takes both for a back-to-back drive and explains once and for all which one actually feels better on the road. Despite having a deposit on the new 2022 Lexus LX 600, David is loving the feel of the older Lexus LX with a proven V-8 engine - and might actually end up buying a Lexus LX 570.

Buy both. 2 lx600 2 lx570 1 lc300. And you need not buy anything for the next 20-30 yrs. Spending 1million dollars or a bit more and not having to spend for the next 20-30 yrs seems good.

David, great job on the Lexus comparison. Newer isn't always better. Your opinion is honest, up front & backed with your Toyota expertise. The 5.7 V8 is a refined icon, no V6 with turbos will ever surpass the all mighty, dependable V8. Your decision of buying a used V8 over a 'new' V6 is 'proof in the pudding'.

Hi David! Phenomenal video as always David, I have to say before I purchased my 2021 LX 570 I did all the checks on the vehicle that I learned from your videos; however, I don’t have your experience but I feel this truck purchased from the Tahara factory in Japan And with your guidance & expertise, I made the perfect choice.. like I said in the past you are the best of the best of the best. I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know-you are a brilliant brilliant man and a modern day Albert Einstein… I’m looking forward to getting the GX at the end of 2023… The only downside to the LX 570 is the gas mileage; moreover, I look at it this way “pay me now or pay me later“ from a mechanic perspective.. Respectfully Submitted, Jimmy USAF 🇺🇸✈️😇✝️💜👍🇨🇮🇨🇦🇯🇵

I picked up a '14 LX 570 last year. Fully loaded, 110k miles for $40k. I prefer that version of the 200 series appearance-wise and the tech is modern enough (although extremely outdated to the average iPhone-touch-screen-tech-obsessed consumer) for me. I hate the trend of manufacturers moving everything to touch screen with way too many nested functions. I can get Apple CarPlay through Grom's VLINE mod. The luxury features are good enough for a truck for me, although pale in comparison to the average Range Rover, which at this point are dime-a-dozen to me, and not to mention extremely unreliable. The fuel economy sucks (especially since I put 33" tires on the OEM 20" wheels), but I can afford it and I do not commute with it. I will eventually install the auxiliary fuel tank for more range. I intend to keep this car for an extremely long time (at least 250k miles), eventually outfitting it for overlanding in the American west, once I put more miles on it and it's newness-to-me fades. As everyone knows, they have phased out the V8, so these trucks will only become more desirable in the future. The legendary Toyota/Lexus reliability, tank-like build quality, rarity (they sold very few LX 570s of this vintage in the U.S. - something like 4,000/year), luxury, and go-anywhere, do-anything ruggedness does it for me. This truck can seamlessly transition from hauling a family in comfort, safety and style to tackling advanced off-road trails with few modifications required.

Having a ‘21 Land Cruiser HE I get the same feeling with the steering. It’s heavier with good feedback and suitable responsiveness for this size SUV. It’d be nice to have an larger fuel tank to improve range between fill ups, and an infotainment system update that supports apple CarPlay. I’m sure there are space constraints to increasing the size of the main tank, although auxiliary tanks are an option. I’d prefer to avoid aftermarket mods for a vehicle of this class, but that may be the only way to get CarPlay. At least the Bluetooth connection has been consistent.

Hello David. Great video! Very early this year I wait-listed for a GX460 - Luxury. But my colors and options have not been available. A few weeks ago I test drove the LX570 and was so impressed I bought it! The LX is another level above the (already excellent) GX. I plan on keeping for a very long time. I say “buy the LX 570”!! I doubt you would have trouble selling it later and recovering most of your purchase price. Good luck either way with your decision!

For somewaht like myself, who does not need and probably will never use 1/2 of the tech in these new vehicles, I much prefer a simpler mechanical design. The down-side of the LX-570 for me were the horrible fuel economy and 3rd row seats that folded sideways taking up rear cargo area space and they could no longer be removed. You could order a LX-570 without the 3rd row, but these models would lack one of if not the best sound system in the industry, the Mark Levinson Premium Sound System, which for me is an absolute must have.

I adore the 4.6L V8 in my 17 GX460. The 5.7 might even be better still. The 3.5TT isn't a bad engine, but to replicate the torque curve of a larger displacement engine, the 3.5TT will absolutely have to be in-boost more often, and at lower RPMs, than it otherwise would. Toyota makes great engines, but we shall see if the 3.5TT can so easily go 300k, 400k, 500k miles or more. GX470's And GX460's have no issue doing so, even with hard use.

I like the better fuel economy of the smaller turbo-charged engines, but I have my concerns with long-term reliability. I know Toyotas are known for their reliability, but at the same time, turbos are still turbos. I think I'd opt for the older model just for the simplicity of the engine and also being able to get a great deal on a used low-miles model. I don't know that the turbo-charged smaller engines get enough better fuel efficiency to make up for the potential mechanical issues they are more likely to have later down the road....All that said, if I were leasing instead of buying, then the turbo may be more attractive since I will probably not have to deal with the major issues that will arise later.

Owning a 21" sequoia, have to say, this engine will definitely be missed, i bought purposefully couple months ago, a v8 sequoia, with little 20k miles, just to keep it as long as i could, since we will never get a chance a buy such a big v8 from Toyota/Lexus. And knowing i can get LX 600/Tundra/Sequoia 3.5 v6 anytime in the future. Also take into a account the fact that 5.7 is the second engine in Toyota pickup history that run 1 million miles.. I prefer the older LX570 simply because its got more physical room on the inside, and the relatively flat 2nd row floor. The newer LX600 has a very annoying transmission hump on the 2nd row floor area, which makes for a more cramped interior, as the new TNGA-F platform has somehow managed to lose a lot of interior passenger and cargo space. In terms of interior space, the LX600 is a major step backwards to the LX570, that's my personal opinion. Fact: The width between the wheel arches in the cargo bay is less in the LX600. Fact: There is more legroom for 2nd row passengers in the LX570. And cabin width too. In terms of new features, safety, additional forward gears, power, etc. that's where the LX600 shines. But I much prefer the clam tailgate of the LX570. For me, if I were choosing between the two models, I value the LX570 significantly more than the the LX600. From a long term ownership perspective, the V8 will be cheaper to maintain, because it doesn't have the complication of having twin turbos, and all that extra complicated plumbing for a marginal MPG gain.

The issue is gas doesn’t cost the same as 12 years ago or even 5 years ago. Driving older but big engines doesn’t make sense because out of a 95 litre gas tank you basically get the same mileage as a 45 litre sedan with a 2l 4 cylinder engine. The gas expense itself will eat you alive. I guess unless you want to drive your suv 4 times a month, it doesn’t make sense to buy the gas guzzlers.

This video tells me how bad a job Lexus did with the lx600. It is pretty shocking considering how important a vehicle this is for Lexus - it’s their flagship suv and is not cheap. It’s quite obvious from your comments that you should go with the 570 - however, unless you need the extra room I strongly suggest you just get the GX - it’s not the 570 but has updated infotainment, a V8, and still be purchased brand new.

I 100% AGREE LX570 is a million mile truck. Not stressed by a turbo engine when the LX600 get a million miles than we can talk.
