Mustang 2 suspension in a '66-'69 Fairlane Episode 7 Season 2 Autorestomod
Mustang II suspension in a '66-'69 Fairlane
We go to Mustang Central in Byron, GA (sadly no longer in business as of 2016) to install a Mustang II suspension in a '67 Fairlane. While this is a specific car, the generalities of the Mustang II will apply to any of the cars that Rod & Custom Motorsports makes a II suspension for.

Thanks for the kind words! Tom, keep in mid that we post a lot of good general knowledge pretty much each week. That being said we have a '69 Fairlane wagon that we're going to do some stuff to (AOD, power steering, interior redo and new cool radio) so stay tuned.

@ReggyRay289 You'd need to contact Mustang Central for install cost. Retail is $1795 for the base kit. The one shown in the video would be more due to the coil overs.

Excellent video. I will be using this when I get to the front of my 68 Fairlane. Now how about a back half how to? :)

Cory, We think you'll be very happy with both the room and the handling of the Mustang II. As far as the rear section...We haven't seen anything that really bangs our gong for suspension. In reality it boils down to what you want to do with the car. On a street driver, a 3/4-inch rear sway bar and new set of springs an rubber bushings combined with a good set of shocks will go a long way to helping the rear handling. We'll PM you some further suggestions...

I am at the decision point for my 64 Fairlane. Should I go with the Mustang II suspension, the Fatman Fabrications strut suspension, or upgrade the standard stuff and keep the shock towers (which I hate). Now that you've installed the M2 suspension, are you happy with it? Would you do it again? Is structural integrity affected by cutting out towers and welding in the patch panels?

I need HELP! I have installed the mustang ii suspension in my 65 mustang and I have used the stock upper and lower control arms. The mounting location for my sway bar is 44". I cannot find a sway bar that will clear my frame rails. The one in the video looks right if the width is the same as mine.

I have decided to go with the mustang ii front end for my 68 fairlane after watching this. I would like to know what you suggest i do to the rear suspension to go along with it. Heidts makes a bolt in 4 link for a 66-67 and since the front is the same for the 66 and 68 i thought the rear may be as well. Thanks, looking forward to your thoughts.

That is a '66. But the frame rails on a 1968 Fairlane are identical. Also, keep watching ddan, we're going to Texas to pick up a 1968 Fairlane Wagon very soon and taking it to Vintage Air for their Universal A/C while we're there. That will be in a few weeks. Plus we are going to do more weekend projects on the Fairlane as well.

Any idea who owned or who might currently own this car? I’m local to the Warner Robins area and this was actually my first car, sold it to the guy you guys did the work for. Would love to track the car down to see how far it’s come. I know this is an old video but figured I’d give it a shot.

I bought a heidts kit and welded it in then found out it wont work for a 351C what is so different from your kit then theres? Im at a loss and stand still even with a rear sump pan i will have to relocate my power rack. it will not fit under neath any more, is there a way to move the rack forward more almost where the sway bar would bolt to the frame?

Cody, sorry to hear about your issues. We only installed the Mustang II from Rod and Custom Motorsports, you'd have to contact them regarding the differences. Our recommendation would be to call Heidts and see if you can work your way through the issue. Relocating the rack is not really doable since the rack should be as close to horizontal and level as possible.

Cobra, contact the supplier of the Mustang II kit to get a sway bar. Also contact us on our web page listed in the "about" section so we can dig a little deeper into this with you.

I have found out that I can make the stock width 1965 mustang sway bar work. I just need to fabricate the end link mounts. I've posted a new vid if you wanted to see what I'm talking about.

Not us! Even we would hand off a Mustang II install to the guys at Mustang Central (www.mustangcentral.com). And their metal work is the best. Even so, thanks for the vote of confidince!

@DukeNukem65 The owner is going to do the rust repair. He is a diehard car guy so He'll do fine. Just wasn't comfortable doing the II, I don't blame him! Big al and the guys at Mustang Central are the best at this stuff.

Why? A Windsor, Clevo, Chev SBC or LS all bolts in the hole, as even does a 390FE.. Cutting up the car like that will require in many countries a full engineers report. That big ugly spring tower [reinforced on Aussie Falcons] is a huge amount of strength both torsionally and crash. And things like the corner bars as well as Monte Carlo bars strengthen it even more. Ok for a drag car probably but not the street. A tubular frame from in front of the crossmember and completely across the firewall at the seam height probably will make it as strong as a stock Ford.

Well here in the states the laws are a bit loose on that. The Mustang II is an alternative that many folks seek. It offers a better steering geometry than the stock stuff out of the box and can be strengthened (the Rod And Custom kit adds strengthening steel to the frame rails. Much of the things that Ford did to the front section were to keep the towers from flexing under the stress of the A-Arm suspension. Remove the tension (much like the RRS McPherson strut system does) and the chassis tension is largely reduced. There are several cars from Mustang Central that have seen thousands of miles and had zero trouble. So the system is viable and working.
