This week we finish the install of the . National Parts Depot Negative Camber Wedge Kit. We explain the difference between a Shelby Drop and the Negative Camber Wedge. We show you how to safely install coil springs, as well as how to put the Negative Camber Wedge kit on any Mustang, Falcon or Fairlane upper control arm. Next week we Talk Dash pads and column installs.
Thanks for watching!
1965-66 Mustang 1960-65 Falcon Comet alignment specs
1. NO more than .25 degrees difference between driver’s side and passenger’s side.
2. +2.0 to +3.5 degrees caster.
NOTE: for cars with Adjustable strut rods. Please attain as much caster as possible using the shims (at least 1.5 to 2.0 degrees), and then use the adjustable strut rods to increase the caster and make the sides the same. Also, please note that the caster difference between the driver’s side and passenger’s side needs to have no more .25 degrees difference prior to the adjustment of the strut rods.
3. -.5 to 0 degrees camber. No positive camber, please. There is no problem having a slight variation from driver’s side to passenger’s side to account for the crown in the road.
4. 1/16" to 1/8” toe in

We are happy to report that you are not blind. Ford, Chrysler and GM used drum brakes on pretty much everything right on up into the '70s; disc brakes were usually an option and we've seen big block cars (428 cid) with non-power drum brakes. And honestly, a well set up drum brakes system will out stop a Disc system under normal daily driver conditions. We plan to investigate this in the near future.

Cecil, Since this is a driver, we went with the standard perches. We plan to do a rollerized suspension from Open Tracker Racing on our 1964 Falcon Hardtop. We'll also do a '65 Falcon steering upgrade as well. All in due time...=)

Super video guys. Did you use standard spring perches with rubber or did you go with the rollerized perches?

Great episode. Now you can do the 1" Shelby drop alone, or you can do it with the Negative Wedge kit right? What are the differences? I'm not going for track-car handling, I mostly want the suspension drop. :)

The term "Shelby Drop" is kind of a misnomer. The drop is actually in reference to the inner mount for the upper control arm. While it does provide a drop (1/4-3/4-inch usually) it is not a significant one. Fatman Fabricators (Google them) sells a drop spindle that uses a Granada brake conversion--so you'll have to source the brakes. I think we'll do a show on lowering cars because there seems to be a lot of interest in this.

My experience with doing these upper control arm relocations is you end up with about a 5/8" actual drop. This means the body of the car drops about 5/8". That is sally advantageous , but the better geometry of the UCA is the biggest advantage.

A good tip with the drill bits is to use a cordless drill on the low speed. Put a bit of oil around the hole and on the bit. The slower speed and the oil won't burn up bits like the corded electric will and you'll get a better hole.

like you said a 1" shelby drop or less you dont need a wedge kit, just if you go more than 1" drop, i suggest you edit your video to remove the mistake you made by leaving in the drill template. thats just a template used to locate the new holes based off the old holes, i know you guys are aware now but should make it clear to any future viewers. i live just minutes from john at open track racing, i highly recommend using some of his products, great products, i boxed my upper and lower control arms as well and open track racing has those plates to box your control arms, these are all the tricks that the boss 302 race version did back in the day for trans am racing.

We'll be hitting on that on Manic Mechanic Next Tuesday 3.19.19. Yes, the bolt on brakes will bolt up. Be sure that you retain the original spindles as they are quite specific to the '65-'66 Mustang, 1965 Falcon and Comet.

Applepletick???Wow, I didn't even have a fever with it( I don't thimk) It boils down to respect your tools which Jeff, I know you do. Centering punches usually come in 1/64" increments like a drill bit set, and as you stated are for marking/finding a more accurate center so you can make a more pronounced center mark for drilling.

Hi, I have a 67 coupe I did Shelby drop use the negative wedge kit... But I use a 2006 16 inches wheels with a Spacers... The handling is better but... I'm not completely satisfied... Do you think is maybe coz the newer wheels and spacers?? If I go back to 14 or 16 and less offset will improve even more??? Thanks for your time!!
@AutoRestoMod

The wheels shouldn't negatively effect the handling. I'd look into a set of Open Tracker Racing spring perches.

I'm confused on why you're drilling out the old control arm and new ball joints from the NPD kit for the kit's bigger bolt. Why wouldn't the kit already have the bolt size drilled it already on the ball joint that it supplied? Also, can you reuse the ball joint from the existing control arm instead of the one from the kit? What's the advantages of using the new one?
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 3 жыл бұрын
The fact that we went with the deeper race position causes damage to the ball joint if the wedge is not installed. we went with the manufacturers recommendations and parts because that is what they require. The drilling is because of the wedge, it set the ball joint at an angle to the arm.

I'm confused. Does the 1inch drop give the - camber? I thought - camber was bringing in the upper arm

Great video guys, but aren't you suppose to remove the template before putting the upper control arm back on? All other instructions I see say to remove the template and use it for future applications. It would explain why your positive camber was so drastic at the end of the video. Keeping that plate in is like adding multiple shims to the alignment. I'm assuming the alignment shop was able to correct this by removing the majority of your shims, but some cars might not start with enough shims to over-correct this problem.
