Ive had my MG3 Trophy (Battersea blue, although the red also looks good) for a few weeks, apparently I was the first customer to take delivery from my MG dealer, and apart from some marks on a lower window trim - the dealer has ordered the replacement part, I am very impressed with the car. For the money it undercuts the competition by thousands, particularly when taking into account the impressive level of equipment. I would have liked reach adjustment for the steering wheel, and a split fold rear seat, but the economy is proving to be excellent thanks to the hybrid system. However you have to do a journey which allows the Electric motor side of things to get involved. On very short journeys of maybe just a couple of miles from a cold start the car is only running on the petrol engine, and like any other car the economy will plummet, but then up the journey length to say 5 or 6 miles you will see over 60mpg! However compared to my previous car a 2018 3dr DS3 Auto which had the PSA 1.2litre turbo 3 Cylinder, that would only average low 30s mpg! The MG also has a much better ride than my previous car, but that wouldn't be hard as the DS3 had an atrocious ride quality. Finally, in terms of cabin material quality, you make a point regarding the sliding storage lid, which is in sharp contrast to the adjacent high quality centre armrest lid, although on the upside its does allow quick an easy access to the storage compartment beneath, but if you look for example at an equivalent 208, which is some £5,000 more expensive, the quality ir you start to look more closely is no better. Simply put, IMO you cant beat the MG3 for the money!

The headline "the competition doesn't stand a chance" is a touch misleading as overall you don't seem that impressed and recommended other cars as being better, so I'm not sure where your headline fits into the overall impression, plus you did not really go into how the hybrid system works is it self charging? you never mentioned if it was, plus we got no idea how economical the car was, what is the overall consumption? it looks like I am moaning which I suppose I am, you are normally one of the better and more entertaining posters out there but I feel you had a bit of an off day with this one.

Later on, MG will introduce a pure-petrol version of the MG3 to the UK. It just launched to Mexico, which makes use of a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine putting out 110PS and 141Nm of torque, mated to a 5MT or CVT. Mexico also gets the full-hybrid as shown in the video.

I just got one and had it for one week I love it and think it's far better than the Suzuki Swift which I swapped for MG3 but suppose it's Horses for courses

Great review, ive been driving mine for just short of a month and really enjoying every mile. I'm finding the car is somehow learnimg and adaping to my driving style. Terrific economy retun on a recent journey it returned 65.3mpg. In sport mode its really quick of the mark. Its a very comfortable car, much improved bootspace on my previous car and drives really comfortable. I find the interior comfy and practicle. No complaints whatsoever, so pleased I bought it.

I love my new MG3 Trophy, but I find it too quiet, I,m used to engine noise...NONE..and it aint arf quick. Superb..MG its a Winner.

Actually looks really good! 8 sec is pretty quick for a small car. 0-60mph of 8 sec is very slow for 190hp though!

I test drove the 3 and came to the same conclusion it’s not quite the finished product and during the test drive a load of warnings sounded requiring warranty work. In 12-18 months I think it may mature into a good car. When does the manual 5 speed launch in the UK?

I think it's a cracking car for the money, only problem is it's quite a high insurance group for the car.

Some do. My Phev Honda Cr-V did 62 miles of electric on mixed driving the other day. They only quote up to 50

Nice review tish sadly I'm not a fan of the mg anymore I used to love the mg zr back in my young days but they just change the shapes now and don't look like a mg anymore I think the swift be better in my opinion x

Sure it is cheaper to buy but the question is how will the running cost be over 3,6,9 years and what is the warranties on the Hybrid battery

According to other reviews poor fuel economy and lack of split folding rear seat (which is unforgivable) were the deal breakers for me.

At that price I think I would consider the upcoming Citroen eC3, full EV city car and I think it would be a little roomier.

I would choose the Suzuki Swift, I got to see in the new MG3 Trophy at the Everything Electric North Show in Harrogate on Friday 😊

You and these bold titles. If the competition is Renault, Skoda or even the Cupra Born VZ, then MG is doomed😂😂😂. Right off the bat: the colour. I'm not into hatchbacks or small "pocket rockets," but it's hard to resist any car draped in Dynamic Red. Beautiful colour. Obviously we gotta zonk those fake vents. Despite the generous price of this car, everything needs to be functional. Not a bad looking interior although I've seen better. In my opinion, I'm pretty sure the competition can topple this because Suzuki, Renault, Skoda, Cupra etc, you'll see those vehicles more frequently than the MG3, but in today's auto industry anything is possible. Great review. Thumbs up.

it really isnt a hydrid at all it needs a 20kwh battery to give it a decent range on electric. The battery in it powers it for about a mile

Its typical new MG much like the MG4 it looks...ok at a distance but start touching stuff it feels cheap as hell

The front spoiler on that New MG 3 will slice off the legs of any pedestrian unlucky enough to get hit by the damn thing. It may as well be called a Meat slicer and not a spoiler. Although, it will spoil someone’s life.😅Naaah , think I’m going to stick with my VW T CROSS. Still efficient and does what I need it to do for me.

There's nothing "cheap and cheerful" in the price of any new car these days - only "cheap and cheerful" electronic/computerized components put into them which will eventually cost the motorist/owner huge bills when they eventually fail.

I think you were exaggerating about the Steering, my current MG3 has pin sharp steering, so I can’t see the new one not being as good.

You’d be better off spending that money on a used Toyota Corolla which is somewhat larger and a well proven full hybrid.

In principle it appears to be an appealing car. However the market is changing rapidly. The MG3 is a relatively traditional design. Then along comes the KIA EV 3 which breaks with traditional car design and offers something genuinely new a refreshing. Depending on the price it could upset the small end of the car market. I’m waiting for Tish do a full review of the EV3.

Another modern MG aimed at the lower end of the market at a good price but corners have been cut on the interior. These will probably suffer when it comes to depreciation, so i think they will be a better buy in a few years time.

Dunno but I don’t trust Chinese cars. I know it’s an MG but many MG cars are based on Chinese models. I wish MG was like jaguar Land Rover where the cars were made entirely by jaguar themselves but funded by TATA

I wander how long your MG was stuck in a field before it was shipped over? The Chinese are using the UK as a dumping ground but the chickens will come to roost. Like you said aspects of the car are cheap and flimsily made. This car is not for me but I’d consider a European or British made EV.

It's a Chinese built car will not be around in 10 years they are crap would never buy a Chinese built but many people who have no idea how bad they are you should always research any vehicle of how many 20 year old makes of cars are around there are plenty of 20 year plus Toyota's around in Australia included my 27 year Toyota Hilux
